All,
I see the flood of specialty bases being released, and I am really curious as to how people use them. Are you actually spending time grinding away the actual base that is part of the figure? It strikes me as a lot of work, though the photos I've seen do look nice.

I have not bought into this myself as the ones I like all have the big edging which I dislike BUT only this week I have been doing some as a commission. I also often top coins with balsa or moulded plastic sheet for myself which is a very similar thing.
To answer your question, yes you remove the existing base or slotta tab and then pin the figure to the new base (well I do anyway) I use cutters/pliers to get rid of the bulk and then files and the dremel to finish off and it is surprisingly quick once you get the hang of it. (unless you get something in a really hard alloy)

Yeah those companies seem to like the Warmachine style base which I am not a fan of. I've seen a few I might use but haven't tried any yet.

I do, though it sounds like lots of work...but it isn't.
Slotta tabs - either remove and use pins, or simply cut and file the slotta tab into "pins."
Integral bases, bit more work, but not loads.
The time, for me, is relative. If, as I often do, make up my own scenic bases the time is actually slightly more than if I use a "ready-made" and remove integral. (Check my website for all types of bases on figures.)

I did the same thing Orctrader did for my Pirates. I cut the slotta tab itself into two pins for the figure which was pretty easy. I find some of the foundry bases pretty substantial and a bit harder to remove but not impossible.

Removing an integral bases isn't difficult.
1. Snip off the base a bit at a time until you can snip them right to the edge of the foot/shoe.
2. Snip the bottom of the foot to get rid of the thickness.
3. File it a bit to flatten it.
4. Pin and glue.
About a 5 minute job.

Not really much more than that. I do all of my zombies and survivors that way.
Snitchy sends.
