Hi Everyone:
I've been lurking on Lead Adventure for some time, but I finally registered last week so I can begin torepsond to threads and post. I wanted to share something with you all-- the first painted prototype for our upcoming pulp sci-fi spaceship game, War Rocket.
The ship was painted by award winning painter Dave Pauwels. Dave is also the author of the War Rocket rules and is currently painting up a squad of ships for playtesting.
You can see images on Dave's blog:

The ship is incredibly tiny--it is 30mm from nose to tail. However, it is so cool to see all the detail on this little ship. We are making slight changes before reprinting this Galacteer class 1 figure at a higher resolution. One problem is that the wings are so thin that they may not cast properly. The new ship should be better for production.
Hopefully we'll be previewing new ships soon.

I wouldn't say that lovely ship is too tiny at 30mm; That's the size of most figures I paint :)
Can't wait to start collecting these. I celebrated the preview of this ship by watching Flash Gordon (1980) this evening

This rocket looks really nice and crispy. The amount of detail is good. I'm looking forward to see more. :) :)

Nice. I take the size to mean that we'll be able to have HUGE combats with many ships!

Looks grand - and the styling is spot on :) :) :) 8) 8)

Mmmm, pulpy...
That is great. I really like it. Not tempted to buy the game at all though. No sir, not me. Don't need another one. Nuh-uh.
Dammit.

I'm eagerly anticipating this game as well.
Can we get any more information on what we've got to look forward to? Size of forces? length of play? Number of scenarios? etc.
Thanks!

Regarding the War Rocket rules themselves:
This is a collaborative project and my main responsibility is to oversee the production of high-quality 6mm (1:285) pulp sci-fi spaceship models.
The rules development is the responsibility of Dave Pauwels. He just completed the basic mechanics, so we have to playtest them first. This usually means that the basic mechanics will go through several versions before they are settled.
The game is intended to be a beer 'n' pretzels space combat game similar in tone to GW's Man of War and Wessex Games' Aeronef. Each player will command a maximum of 6-12 spaceships. This is not intended to be a fleet action system.
The complete rulebook will include ship design rules, campaign rules with ship/crew advancements, and specific missions that focus on objectives rather than straight shoot to the death scenarios. In addition, there will be a bestiary of space-borne creatures and rules for different types of space terrain.
As the art director of this project, I research and design the models based on pulp covers, toys and movie props from the Golden Age of Sci-Fi. My talented brother Phil designs the ships with a 3D computer program. In teh game, there are 4 classes of spaceships ranging from Class 1 (fighter) to Class 4 (battleship.) Since there will be four main factions with one figure from each class, we are looking at a minimum of 16 ships. If the game and models are popular, we'd like to expand each of the fleets with additional variants of ships.
The first four factions will be: Galacteers (Galactic Space Patrol), Imperial Forces of Marduk the Tyrant, Zenithian saucer-men, and Space Pirates/Marauders. We may design new fleets for other forces such as the Robot Legion and the Demon Women of Deimos. We'll release the rules for these fleets as PDFs on our website.
I hope this gives you more information--sorry I can't be more specific about the rules themselves. I'll be able to discuss them in more depth after some additional playtesting.
Thanks,
Matt Beauchamp

Very cool. I loved Man O' War!
Thanks for sharing what you can. This is my most anticipated game of '08!
