Watching "The Golden Compass" has rekindled my interest in making a band of gypsies for Gloire, so I'm trying to do a headcount of suitable miniatures. Here are the ones I know of, but I'm hoping some of you will be aware of more:
Sara Zingaresce from HellDorado (BTW, can anyone tell me how tall she is?).
Three packs from West Wind's Gothic Horror range.

A girl from Newbold World. She's not actually described as a gypsie, but she has the right look to me.

A few figures by Lance and Laser. Again not actually described as gypsies, but they look right anyway.

A pair of girls from Irregular.

Ravenloft figures (I presume these are OOP, if not, please let me know!).

Black Tree figures.

Actually, this turned out to be quite a lot of figures now that I have them all written down! Still, I'd like to know if there are more. There's also quite an over-representation of musicians and dancers here, which is not really what I'm looking for. Please don't hesitate to mention figures that "look" like gypsies, even if they're not really described as such by the seller. Basically, anything that makes you suddenly want to burst out singing "Thirty Foot Trailer" is right up my alley :)

Hasslefree's "Strumpet" from the villagers range would work:

Wasn't someone asking about Mexican civillians in another thread? Maybe some of them would work too?
-
Thas quite a comprehensive list. There are certainly figures there I haven't seen before. Unfortunately the Ravenloft ones are OOP, but do pop up on Ebay every now and again.
-
I think many pirate miniatures would work as romanitized gypsies.

hmm...really good idea!
next time I'm going to convert something, I'll ask you for ideas :-)

Thas quite a comprehensive list.
I'm quite fond of comprehensive lists :) I actually have a big list of swashbuckling miniatures written down on my computer, I like to think of it as quite comprehensive as I very rarely come across any new swashbuckling miniatures anymore, and I search for them quite a lot. I've been working on publishing the list on the net, but currently the project has stalled because it's just so damn hard to know what to do with all those borderline cases that look "kind of" like swashbucklers but not quite. Still, some day, eh?

Thanks for the reminders! As it happens I already have a Hasslefree Strumpet but had her earmarked for a lady of the night. I might get a second one to paint up as a gypsie. I was also meaning to use some of those Mexican ladies mentioned in the other thread as Spaniards/Portuguese, but coming to think of it, they could double as gypsies too,

Good idea! I can't believe I didn't think of it myself.

I also have a couple of Dark Sword minis earmarked for gypsy girl duty.
-
Ah, found a few more. This is by Eastern Front studios. Frankly she looks rather generic, but she's labelled as a gypsy, so...

And I can't believe I forgot about this perfect-looking dancing girl from Black Cat Bases.

I'll start browsing the Dark Sword website presently...
-
I think you might find some by Reaper Miniatures somewhere in their Dark Havens range. I haven't got the time to trawl through the catalogue at the moment. But will do later on today when its a bit quieter at work :)

Not รก bad find, I particularely like that knife thrower.

You know, that could be a fantastic project a la Col. Marbles' showcases on Frothers. I'll bet web hosting for such guides could be arranged...

I've actually been meaning to mention it to you, Pete. Not because I'm looking for web hosting (well, actually I am, but I've simply assumed that problem would get resolved one way or another once I get to it) but because I think you once said you were working on a similar list. Anyway, currently the list is in a right state of chaos, and I wanted to get it a bit more ordered before bringing it up.
Presently I've run into two problems that frustrate me to no end. Firstly, there's a lot of borderline cases. You know, all those "fantasy adventurers" from companies like Ral Partha and Dark Sword that look "a bit" swashbuckler-ish, but just a bit. There are also lots of generic figures like beggars, monks etc that I don't know whether to include or not. I do like completeness, but I don't want the core purpose of the list to get watered down. I suppose one idea is to create a "dumping ground" subcategory where all these borderline cases could get thrown in. People browsing the list can easily ignore it if they like.
Secondly, I have divided the list into a number of categories such as pirates, "core setting" adventurers, villagers/civilians and so on. When there's a whole, cohesive range of swashbucklers being made by some company, I choose to list the entire range as one entry under one of these categories, rather than listing each individual miniature (that'd be overkill, right?). The problem here is when a range will include some figures that by all rights should belong under a different category. Black Cat's pirate range is a perfect example of this. It includes all kinds of non-pirate stuff like tavern staff, tribal savages and witch hunters. So there'll either be a hell of a lot of cross-referencing going on within the list, or the reader will have to be trusted to browse the entire list to make sure he doesn't miss anything interesting, which sort of kills the purpose of categorizing in the first place.
Oh, and a third problem: E-mailing all those companies for permission to use their pictures will be a nightmare. There's a good 50 companies in the list, I think.
-
If you want to include OP miniatures, there some figures labelled as Gypsies in the Citadel C46 Villagers line (particularly the C46 Travelling Players):
http://www.solegends.com/citc46/citc46players/index.htm
http://www.solegends.com/citc46/index.htm
"The Flake", "The Loudmouth", "The Ruffian" and "The Thug" are all marked "Gypsy" on their slotta tabs and "The Boss" is plainly a Gypsy as well...
Note that the C46 Travelling Players sell for astronomical prices on eBay (when they can be found).:o
-
Oh, how I long for those Citadel minis... but no! I must not become one of those nutter OOP collectors :)
Dark Sword did have a few "maybes". I think that if one trawls all the fantasy adventurer ranges, quite a few borderline cases will crop up, especially various females in vaguely exotic-looking dress.
For a more off-the-wall idea, I wonder if any of these Indian women from Eureka could pass as gypsie-ish.

You must include this one- The mother of all Gypsies :)
A RAFM fortune teller:

Oh, yes! I got that in the mail just yesterday.

I was just meaning to start browsing RAFM for suitable miniatures. That one looks very good indeed.
By the way hammershield, do I understand correctly in that you're modelling a band of gypsies, too? What kind of period/setting would this be for?
-
I'm starting to think that certain Ottomans could also make good gypsies, with head swaps of course. If the shields on these TAG figures come separate (so they can be left off), they'd be perfect for such a conversion:
The baggy clothes, the short vests and the sashes are three of those stereotypical gypsy hallmarks. The curved swords don't hurt, either.

Excellent. They are only missing the fiddes, the copperware and the abducted children. ;-)

If we're going that route, the new/forthcoming GW LOTR Corsairs of Umbar might work well too:
http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.us?do=Individual&code=99121464003&orignav=9
Since they're from the GW LOTR line, you might have scale problems vs. 28mm figures from other companies, but the convertability of the plastic models is a plus.
-
I'd say cossacks should work well too. Some possibly without a headswap. TAG makes good ones.
-
Fenryll figures are beautiful, but they tend to be closer to 32mm than 28mm. The exception I found was the vender with the cart. He would work as a gypsy.
-
This is a great range of gypsy folk. I'm particularly fond of the West Wind ones.
