We played our first game last night only had two units and heroes each so we could get a feel for the mechanisms, I will post a couple of pics later and a little report, little being the operative word as with only two units it did not last long as you will see.
Have one question re. close combat, reference is made to more casualties and equal but no mention of none. We assumed this eqated to equal.
Also when calculating number of casualties is this after rolling on the damage table or before?

Hi Phil,
I can assume that two units and a hero made it a quick game :)
Better let the heroes out for starter games.
If both have no casualties at all just go on and nobody checks for morale.
It is after rolling on the damage table.
I know we are short with examples there. I apologize for it !
Example A
Unit 1 has received three hits and rolls on the DT kill, kill, wound
Unit 2 has received also three hits but rolls kill, kill, save
Unit 1 loses close combat and must check morale immediately.
Example B
Unit 1 has received 5 hits and rolls Kill, kill, wound, supressed, supressed,
Unit 2 has received also 5 hits and rolls kill, kill, kill supressed, supressed
Although both units loose 3 figures Unit 2 looses close combat because unit 2 rolled three kills
For further questions please ask.
Cheers
Björn

Thanks for the clear and prompt reply, we also assumed that any heroes with a unit destroyed/captured in close combat was also removed, correct?
Anyway here is the game - The forces comprised of 2 units of Belgians one Force Publique unit (trained) with rifles and one allied Ruga-Ruga unit (Raw) with muskets and an hero. The other force was an Arab raider force of one unit of Askari (raw) with rifles and on unit of allied tribesmen (raw) with muskets. Each force would enter at opposite ends of the table along a jungle path. The fast move certainly hurries the game along and in no time the Ruga-Ruga were in contact with the tribal warriors

Meanwhile the Force Publique unit attempted to outflank the Arabs
(http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg43/olafnn/TTa003.jpg)
The tribal warriors were no match for the brutal Ruga-Ruga mercenaries and the accompanying hero and were cut down, the Ruga-Ruga in turn were charged by the Arab Askari, the Force Publique still had not reached the flank hampered by the poor terrain (or Dave's poor dice scores).

However their help was not needed, even though aided by their hero the Arab askari were no match for the Ruga-Ruga whose blood was up and subsequently fled the field to be cut down to the man.

A short but enjoyable first outing, looking forward to two weeks time when we shall try a Great War game with 4/6 units a side.

Phil !
Thanks for putting in some photos and a short Report. I use T+T mainly for Darkest Africa.
Iam curious on the Great War Report. Feel free and try out the small arms vs. cover rules for the guys inside the trench. And why not play with off table artillery.
Anyway....now to your question !
When a hero is with a unit and the unit looses close combat AND the morale check; the unit and the hero are removed from play. This is a good way to capture heroes.
Please note : We changed the Damage table for heroes :
1+2 is a wound.

Foundry, but I think he was originally mounted on a bullock.
