Title: Celtic Army Now the Gaels as 023 inspired Cursed or Nearly Dead!
Post by: Lowtardog on 17 May 2012, 10:30:36 AM
This is a thread to measure my celtic myth warbnands for SOBH

Thanks to a good trade with Young Mr Leadasbestos :D I have a goodly number of Celtos Minis.

My warbands are the Gael and Firbolg, the Fomorions I traded for Reaper Highlanders with a mate who is already building  a fomorion horde ;D

So that gives me a good sized warband of Firbolg/undead celts
A heroic warband of Gael - Celtic warriors, to be of the Red Hand Society  ;)
The Reaper Highlanders as they are quite a bit larger will be some other "Scots" tribe and as such will be blue skinned ;D
I also have a smaller warband of skeletal celts from Cltos which wil be encounters etc.

To add to this I am not going for celtos Dwarves or elves as I am not too keen on those figures

rather I think I will plump for the West wind dwarf wars shaven ones and Highlanders which for £16 a warband for 15 minis will give me some nice celtic warrior dwarves.

On elves not really seen anythign I like so far, not keen on the Alernative armies elves and have already painted and sold their fomorions which are nice but the undead win on that count.

Anyway stay tuned ;D

I like these "project-threads" as it is always fascinating to see how an army evolves and what thoughts the collector has about his miniatures. Pictures, please! Lots of pictures!  :)

We are indeed,

I am switching from unit to unit between Samurai and Celtic stuff :D for variety

I have 16 Firbolg on the go and will get a WIP picture up tonight.

Oh, added to the celtic list

Four A Sea demons and other critters
Vor Growlers and similar Britannen beasties for encounters and the like :D

Great Karl. Looking forward to seeing this. I've always really liked those Celtos figures.

But I can't (no, really, I just can't!) start in on yet another genre / period  :(

(Well, not for a while anyway  ;))

Glad you're back into it  :)

Oddly enough, just yesterday I was thinking about starting a thread to track my Aztec WAB army progress...

Glad to see the Celtos boys are getting some attention! I too have a Celt project, and will eagerly watch this for ideas to steal!  ;)

Cheers Richard, I have slowly got back into painting and find human flesh (always have) hard to do, so this will be quitre an interesting way to try out new techniques as my oil wash is far too heavy a technique ;D

Aye Leadasbestos, I have taken a look at your celts and they are great, been following them on the road to victory in LPL :D

Interstingly been reacding slaine novels, the tain etc for inspiration. In reflection the Celtos Firbolg are rather more like the Drune. Also although I understand the use of orcs I think the wee 4A demons will be my Fomorions. :D

I have some of the old Fantasy Forge Swamp Orc's to use in my setting too. Also got a lot of the Celts they did and the Slaine piece.

Need to dig out my Slaine comic's for inspiration.

Been making a 2x2 board which will be swamp/marsh type.

Watching this with interest too Karl. I used a Celtos Sidhe warband for the Frotherheim game at Salute 2010. Still got to paint up some Fomorian sirens lead by Balor (a Heresy Cyclops) as opponents.

Ok here are WIP shots of the Firbolg so far, only flesh and kilts started, still need to tidy up plaid but went for uniform approach as a clan tartan thingy ;D

Nice progress so far, great project ;)

Foundry one with normal one in the pack, postage is only £2.50 so a lot cheaper than Foundry themselves :D

I think only Rackham do spasm warriors or so Ive seen

Post by: Comsquare on 17 May 2012, 06:46:36 PM
Yes, Rackham has also some shapeshifters/warpspasms.

I'm still looking for my warped Slaine, I'm not so happy with the Foundry one.
Looks a little too cartoony to me :?

I'm sure you are aware of the old Grenadier wood-elves that'd make nice Sidhe?

Black Tree design has two swamp trolls that look very much like Slàine Fomorians. I own the gesturing one it's really nice (I heard somewhere they were meant to be part of slàine range that never got off the ground).
Alternative Armies' Fomorians are nice too, but their pricing is odd....

The original Mordheim Possessed figure would work very well as a warped warrior, you only need to swap the hands.
Otherwise the old Chronopia 'Sons of Kronos' had viridians or some such that work well enough as warped, even if their pose is static. They are bigger than Grenadier barbarians.

Not to hijack the thread, but to put useful info in the same place:
The Fantasy Forge figs reminded me of the Renegade ones and and I remembered an old story. From an anient (2003) thread on Frothers:
Quote
These miniatures (apart from the guy on the left) were produced by Harlequin in the mid 90's. They were made by Roy Eastland (where are you now Roy?) at the end of his time at Fantasy Forge, and were part of a batch that was released for sale by them (FF) as they were going broke. There was some confusion as to who then owned the rights to the minis, and I think that they were sold twice, once to Harlequim and once to the nice chaps at Renegade (maybe one side bought the moulds and the other bought the Greens?).

These actual minis have been kicking around for about 10 years, I moulded them once each for the two companies mentioned above (I always remember a miniature I've worked on). The Chieftain is a conversion from the excellent "Slaine" model that Roy did for Fantasy Forge.

Roy Eastland has a talent the nobody in the miniature industry has yet harnessed, It would be very good to see more of his work, he made some fine early medieval Saxons for Harlequim which are no longer on sale for some reason.

Yes, the Renegade minis are great too.
I want to get me those 4, but they are selling them in a blister of 8, 2 of each sculpt.
If there's somebody interested in sharing a blister of these, please let me know :)

Title: Re: Celtic Myth warbands - Plastic conversions for Firbolg and WIP
Post by: Lowtardog on 29 November 2012, 06:03:32 PM
I received some plastic figures from Frank Mongrel Hammond and decided to convert to firbolg undead.

Using some ghouls and GB saxons and Vikings, these are the first with simple head and arm swaps.

I plan on converting the saxons with ghoul heads etc.

I cant claim modelling skills for the mounted conversion that was all Franks work and a cracking job - I think for a Game of Thrones project that died the death

Finally my leader who is WIP and is a Westwind Lucifer wars figure, the chariot wil be his battle ride and as its so large I think being big he should fit right in. The driver has a simple head swap with a heresy blight head

Nice! Great job on the Celtos minis. There's a few there I wouldn't mind getting my paws on. I'm using the same standard bearer with the bell(?) in my own undead unit, he's a good un. I've got to get some of those GB plastics, they're great.

FInally got back to painting some celtos figures, that was a chariot with some additions, the driver is celtos with heresy ghoul head, demon is form Lucifer wars range.

2 gribblies are from Andy at 4A minis.

Will get better photos soon along with the horde to date. Steders traded another 14 undead so busy on the paint table ;D

Started in 2012, I can now say the army is done and dusted, now moving onto Gaels which I am pinching Zero23 idea for the nearly dead, painting them with grey flesh and monochrome clothing, to be used as another faction or as allies :)

They look great. I like that the leather brown adds a contrasting element, but is still a "natural" looking color. Cool to see the idea in another context, too.

Many thanks, mine aren't anywhere near as good as yours but were inspiring. I ended up doing the leather owing to the large black area on the kilt and wanting the plaid effect to contrast a little especially as they are all bare chested
