Title: Fridericus Redivivus: Impetus in 15mm [UP 19.11.12, p. 4]

Hi all!
I've just started the latest army project on my blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/), and hopefully you don't mind if I promote it here. Knowing myself I need every bit of cheering (and critical comments if you must ;D) in order to get this done. The plan is to build up a Medieval army in 15mm to be used with the (Basic) Impetus rules. It's themed on a young lad's Italian adventure, namely Konradin's campaign to reconquer the kingdom of Sicily in 1267 to 1268.

After an introduction (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/05/fridericus-redivivus-praeludium_20.html), the first actual miniatures have been posted. And, of course, I had to start with an iconic image: the knights!

I will add to this further bases as we go along, and - if you wish - will post condensed updates here. For a bit more detail and different shots you can always refer to my blog. There's also a dedicated project page (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/p/projects_09.html), where I'm going to collect all the entries.

Anyway, thanks for watching! :)

Okay, seemingly just a few interested, but all the more: Thank you! 8)
Here's the next unit. Less splendid, I know. But where's noble light, there have to be lowly footmen as well. So, come the archers:

More views on the blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/05/fridericus-redivivus-archers.html). Thanks for watching. :)

Very nice indeed,a lot of work went into getting those Knights looking so good I should think, and the basing especially for yon lowly peasants is excellent.  :)

More pictures and yaking, as always, on the blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/06/fridericus-redivivus-italian-infantry.html). Thanks for watching!

PS: Note on lighting: For some weird reason I like the structured background better than the (admittedly, photoshopped) purely white one. It makes photos appear somewhat dark, but it gives a more natural feel. So, I'll probably stay with that.

Thanks all for your comments! :)

Prof, actually, it's not all of a sudden. Since I've pondered the idea of using smaller scales for at least over a year now. The first outing was a blog post (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2011/03/to-scale-or-not-to.html) dating from the 1st of March 2011. My reasoning boils down to an increasing lack of time, space and money. I'm simply not in a position to amass armies in 28mm, and at the same time I don't want to be limited to just skirmish games. And, truth be told, smaller scales can be a lot of fun, too. ;)

Double post, but still going strong. :D
A unit of Italian crossbowmen comes along, kindly financed by a local Hohenstaufen supporter. Difficult to mug this time, perhaps because they are hiding in the bushes…

More but sadly no better photos on the blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/06/fridericus-redivivus-crossbowmen.html). Next time there will be some knights. So colour ahead again. Meanwhile, critics and commentators are always welcome!

Double post again. :'(
Hopefully the next unit will cause some more interest, another unit of knights:

These are Italian and German supporters/mercenaries/soldiers of fortune. They have adopted a vaguely wedge-shaped formation – which was allegedly used by German knights in particular.
Some further notes on that and the unit itself can be found on my blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/06/fridericus-redivivus-2nd-knights.html).

And again: Thanks for watching!

Anyway, after quite some time here's the next installment: Some footsloggers again, but already the last ones for this army!

These represent a band of German or South Italian mercenaries, formerly employed by poor king Manfred (indicated by their captain's shield). Now it's time for payback, bloody Charles of Anjou! >:(

The blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/07/fridericus-redivivus-2nd-mercenaries.html) has some additional photos and information, if you're interested. In any case, thanks for watching!

By the way, all figures so far are from Legio Heroica.

Thanks for your kind comments, guys. I held back my reply for I wanted to combine it with an update. Silly me… ::)
Finally, here is the next and – dare I say it? – penultimate unit for Konradin's army. It's a base of skirmishing cavalry, labelled as "ginettes".

These are obviously meant to represent retainers of a certain Spanish adventurer (who will receive a separate entry here later). But I opted for a more generic look, since similarly equipped light cavalry was available all over Europe at this time. Italians for example recruited either horsemen from the Balkans (later to be known as stradiotti) or employed Muslim mercenaries in the South.

Next time I'll be back with another "full-blown" unit. Meanwhile, visitors to my blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/08/fredericus-redivivus-jinetes.html) (which has some additional views and info) are welcome as always. :)

Is that a white ladder on a red field what I'm seiing in that banner? Really appropriate! It is the symbol of a famous italian noble family...actually I came from Verona, the city they ruled in middle age. I'm impressed to see their banner in your work. It is the first time I see it not painted by me :)

Darrell, your comments are appreciated each and every way. :D Good to see you back on track.

Faber, yes, it's the Della Scala banner. They supported Konradin's venture quite a bit, thus they had to be included among the Italian mercenaries. Actually, the unit leader is sporting the (non-contemporary) blazon of Verona as well.

I'm impressed to see that someone else, in another country, knows and represent in his miniatures that blazon. I've read your blog post about them and I've appreciated the historical reference. Thanks for sharing and keep going Doc!

So, this is the last piece to complete the (basic) Impetus army. I'm rather relieved, it has to be said, but also a tiny bit proud for it's the first army finished in years. To complete I couldn't resist but to include one of the most dazzling (if that's the word) characters in Young Konradin's entourage. Thus, here's Henry of Castile leading the Spaniards' charge at Tagliacozzo.

To be honest, when I started this project I had no clue who this man was. Definitely a, let's say, interesting personality, Henry was the archetypical condottiere and self-made man: He fought and intrigued in Spain, France, England, at some point even in North Africa for the Muslims. When he was awarded the lordship of Rome (hence his nickname "El Señador") by Charles d'Anjou, his needs still weren't satisfied. So he heartily welcomed Konradin's arrival in Italy and joined the pretender on the campaign against his former employer. Unfortunately, the decisive battle at Tagliacozzo ended Henry's career - at least for the next 22 years. While in prison he tried his hand at writing and casually produced one of the most widely read knightly romances of all time, called "Amadis". As soon as he was released Henry once again took to the battlefield, enlisted with and against the Muslims in Spain, before he peacefully died at the age of 73 in 1303. What a man! :D

And that's it. A few bits and pieces are to follow, along with a shot of the whole assembly. If you expected that I had my good romp on 15mm now, brace yourself for another project in the not too distant future. This time it's all about Konradin's sinister opponent, Charles d'Anjou.
In case you're interested in a more detailed (if not necessarily more comprehensive) version, please check out the entry on my blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/09/fridericus-redivivus-3rd-knights.html). Anyway, thanks for watching! :)

PS: All miniatures by Legio Heroica. Flags printed and coloured by hand. Shields are freehands.

The project isn't dead or even finished yet (ever seen such projects?), since there are many 'accessoires' left that could possibly enhance the gaming experience. First of all I tried to create period specific casualty markers. Lucky me, Khurasan has some cracking models which fit the bill quite nicely. So, here are the first two prototypes:

These resemble the Reaper or "Dancing Death" imagery which was commonplace throughout the (later) Middle Ages. The bases are two-part: One is a washer labelled with numbers (I created a template and printed it onto adhesive paper), the other one is a ready-made magnetic base. Works fine and isn't too obtrusive on the tabletop.
Simple as that, there's nothing more to see on the blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/10/not-dead-yet.html), but I just cannot refrain from a shameless plug. ::)

Keeping up with the "useful to have" items, I made up a baggage camp. This is not required for the basic game, but might come in handy when I ever upgrade to the full blown Impetus rules.

As you can see, it's not the typical fortress style camp but rather a civilian scene. I think this suits the army's overarching theme quite well, since Konradin's adventure has a certain 'chivalrous romance' feeling to it. I tried to capture this atmosphere by depicting a courtly banquet. Someone remember the passage about Renly Baratheon's camp from G.R.R. Martin's Ice and Fire novel? There's some inspiration as well.

All figures were hunted down at Donnington Miniatures (links can be found on my blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.de/2012/11/a-jolly-days-camp.html)). The tent is actually a 1/72 model produced by Rusus, but it fits the purpose well enough. The banner on top (Konradin's Swabian coat of arms) can be exchanged, so the camp could be used for other armies as well.

If you have any question, comments or critique, please feel free to answer here or on the blog (see link above). It's always welcome! :)

Thanks a lot for your comments, guys. :)

Wasn't that easy to find suitable (and decent!) civilian models in 15mm, though. It's still primarily a "gaming scale" me thinks, so people are more interested in the umpteenth warrior model rather than nicely sculpted non-combatants. But looking at the evolution of 28mm over the last two decades or so, there's still hope. Games like Impetus with its big diorama style bases can possibly open things up as well.

As a teaser, I'm currently in the process of assembling the first couple of units for an antagonist army, i.e. the forces of Charles d'Anjou. Research has been great fun so far, and hopefully pics of finished unit will start to appear just before Christmas.

I've already taken photos of the full assembly (as well as "the man himself"), but since some of those pictures might appear in the next Impetus supplement I don't want to spoil content in advance.

However, a first draft of the cover has been published, and there's a glance at what's to be expected.

An incredible looking camp and an inspirational army for 15mm. The smaller scale armies are often times more simple or utilitarian but I think people miss a lot of opportunity in stand (or impetus) based games to make units look really cool. You've done a great job.

Fantastic stuff - well done.

Your 15mm figures are better than my 28mm.
