I don't know if you girls and boys fvisit Steve Dean's webpage but I just found this there:

by abbot_amaury
We should ask that guy to come and work for us.

I actually shun Steve Dean's website. My ego can hardly handle all the downtrodding it gets in this place

I do look but agree what with the LAF and SD I often look at my figures and quietly cry to myself  :D
Too many good painters around, what happeed to all the basic paiters who only fliock their bases :o

abbot_amaury is a german guy from Munich, he is also a member from LAF :-)
stunning painting, btw!

OK, I'll shut up now.
I'm sure you can't
And anyway, thanks for the wunderbach pic : Amaury should post it here, but you should improve your "scout skill" by making a bit of XP :)

Impossibly good. Stop posting pictures like this, it's depressing to mere mortals! :)

this sort of outstanding painting is depressing for everyone, mortal or not

Lovley, lovley...lovley. :P Who makes the model second from the left, the guy who looks like a depressed gumshoe with two holstered guns? I must get one.

Not only did I see them at SD's place - but I voted for them too :)
I love his stuff but wonder what his "technique" is? Looks like some subtle washes in there, but not certain. Any one know of a post where he describes how he paints?

dont think it's wash technique, I'd say just many many many layers :D
-
Yeah, it looks like he builds up the highlights using a lot of layers and patience.
I can never approach that level, but I do think the highlights are too brash in some instances. The black in particular looks cartoony to me.

Amaury made a little recipe here :
http://www.sd-forum.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3922
and he says in another post, he does no more than five layers :o
But I remember he explain here, on the LAF, than he uses Revell Aqua color to get this wonderful flashy colors, but I don't know how
meow,
Matt
EDIT : it's here :
http://forum.backofbeyond.de/viewtopic.php?p=12139&highlight=#12139
For the jean material of the hillbillies and one of the gangsters above I used Revell Aqua Color 'Blue' and mixed in a little white for the highlights. Revell Aqua Color is very thick and you will have to mix in some water (at least I do). Although I only have five or so pots of Aqua Color I quite like that stuff somehow...

Thanks for the kind words guys!
...We should ask that guy to come and work for us.
As mentioned by the Professor I am already a proud member of the LAF. Just been silent recently...
You just have been quicker posting it here than me (wanted to complete just one more mini...as always)
BTW: the SD-forum-final was a pure LAF-final this time: had a very close fight against dominic (some of his great canetan scenery and the shermans he posted recently).
I love his stuff but wonder what his "technique" is? Looks like some subtle washes in there, but not certain.
No, I don't use washes (except for the faces). The technique isn't all that special: normally it is 3-5 layers depending on the size of the area (bigger area - more layers) and the base color. If the color transition between the single layers is still too hard I tone it down with a thinned mixture of the two adjecent colors (kind of 'dabbing' - don't know if that term really fits). Which makes 3-5 layers + x actually...
But I remember he explain here, on the LAF, than he uses Revell Aqua color to get this wonderful flashy colors, but I don't know how...
The flashiness of the colors does not depend on the color brand imho (I mostly use GW and foundry at the moment). It depends on the contrast between the dark and light areas. The more layers you do the more contrast you can put in (without the single layers beeing recognized as differnt layers).
Well, the flashy colors are a matter of taste of course - kind of pulpy.
Cheers,
Hagen

I think it is frequently called "feathering" and is not as easy in acrylics as in oils. Fantastic work, abbot.
I shall now return to remain silent.

Yes Yes Yes! let's make it bad...I find it disappointing that you can not read the label on the cigar of the guy in the middle...
Phew now I feel better and can look at my paint jobs again (all non smokers of course)
...on another thought, I think I shoot myself when I start painting tonite...
-
I only meant it as a constructive criticism and certainly not a knock on the paint talent, I hope it did not come off that way. It's purely a matter of taste in the end.
Also, I'm amazed that you can get that level of contrast without hard edges in only 3-5 layers. You are either very talented or dabbling in the dark arts. I think we should call the inquisition to be on the safe side
-
@abbot_amaury Thanks for answering the "technique" questions. Very informative :)

Don't misunderstand me : i'm sorry if "flashy" sounds wrong ; I'm totally in awe with your marvellous colors, I'll dream to copy them and that's why I searched the recipe trough the net.
But it's far more easier to believe in a "magic" product than in work & skill
And I'm really sorry to call you "Amaury" all along, dear Abott.
Keep up your incredible work !

No offence taken. Constructive criticism is always welcome

Well, it's 3-5 layers and feathering to smudge the hard edges.

"Flashy" sounds perfect to me. Imho it is flashy...

Great work indeed! I was so blinded by the glare coming of these lovely figures that I'd to put on my sunglasses 8)
Thankyou - its really wonderful work.
Best Wishes.

Hey...of course these minis are awesome...
...I wish I could paint like that...
The cigar thing was obviously a joke
-
I'm thinking of spamming GW with these pics, he, he ....
