Good afternoon fellow readers,
recently I started to build up a British force for Black Powder. I decided to follow Picton's 5th Division during the Waterloo campaign because I really like this chracterful general and the composition of his force at Waterloo.
Some weeks ago I started with the 44th Regiment of Foot "East Essex" and this weekend I finally finished the basing. Here are some pictures of the finished unit:
Larger picture: Here (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7JE4xSStYd4/T9TMJPGTWKI/AAAAAAAAAWE/oOFhun_xcAc/s1600/Finished+Unit.jpg).
All the men are based separately on coins because I wanted to be able to use them for small skirmish games as well as for large battles. Afterwards I prepared the 40mm x 40mm bases to carry the coins. The scenic elements of the base are arranged to hide the gaps between the tray and the coins a bit.

For larger pictures and some WIP pictures of the painting you might be interested in my blog: Here (http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/).
Within the next days I'll post some more WIP pictures of the bases there.
Currently I'm working on the next unit: Royal Foot Artillery (Roger's Battery).
I hope to be able to finish them this week or next week.
Please feel free to comment, citizise or compliment my work. I appreciate any suggestion to improve my efforts.
Cheers

Monty;
Great tutorial on the flags. Thanks. I will try this myself as I have figures painted, just needed to do the flags which I have been wavering on...
I am also going to base my figures the same way you did in groups of 4 on round bases with a 2 x 2 base. I was able to pick up a bunch of GWs LOTR bases very cheaply, have cut them in half and now need to glue a strip of plastic on the open base edge, paint them and use them. I have names/numbers on my individual figure basess for skirmish games. So again, similar ideas!!

Great work on the basing

Nice work! I think that I, too, may follow that approach to basing. Did you cut the holes for the coins yourself, or were they pre-made?

Actually I tried to cut the holes myself but it didn't work very well. I bought a cheap punching whole whicht went dull rather fast. Later I discovered that Warbases (http://www.warbases.co.uk/ (http://Link)) some similar trays and precut top bases. Because the English coins standardized bases didn't fit to the 1ct.-coins I used, Martin and Diane made some customized top bases for me for a really reasonable price.
If you're further interested in the basing then visit my blog: Here (http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/). I'll habe a tutorial with some WIP pictures online on Thursday (14th June) I think.

Excellent work on those bases and a great idea for swapping units by changing out colours.
I'm just putting the finishing touches to my own version of part of Pictons division - Pack's Brigade. I'll have a nosey at your blog for further inspiration !

As promised the tutorial and the WIP pics are online:

I hope you enjoy it.

Admiral Benbow here from the LAF built it and postet his progress with lots of WIP pics here:

I'm sure that it'll be absolutely breathtaking view to habe it on the table!
Maybe I can post some pictures of the event next week.

Really impressive. I've started a similar basing tecnique with some French troops but using 20mm x 20mm square bases that all fit magnetically on to a larger 40mm x 40mm base. I think your style is very elegant though.
-
Particularly gorgeous blues on those artillerymen.
-
Aha, it's you that has acquired that cracking fort :)
With wonderfully painted figures like that it will be a set up to cause envy the gaming world over 8)
cheers

Excellent work, you should do a painting tutorial.

This weekend the gaming group I've been playing with for the last months organized a really huge game. It took place in a partly fictional Napoleonic setting and was extremely well prepared by some of the members. They set up a enormous 70 square feet table packed with excellent terrain and beautiful miniatures.
Although I wasn't able to bring in some miniatures I had the pleasure to participate in the game on Sunday. My 44th Rgt. of Foot was appointed to guard Admiral Benbow's extraordinary fort (he played on Saturday and handed it over to me rather undamaged).
Here is the evidence:
I'll not post a complete report. On the one hand there is a gifted fellow within the group who'll take that task. On the other hand I'm not able to tell all the stories that happend during this outstanding event.
But nevertheless I'll post a few line about the English part of the battle on Sunday. If you're interested in it, please take a look at my blog. Here (Link (http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/2012/06/blackpowder-game-review-2nd-siege-of.html?showComment=1340804899976#c4790508244351460284)) is part 1 with deployment and some pictures of the table online. Part 2 will follow end of the week.
I hope you enjoy it

Part 2 of the game report is online.
If you are interested look here: Link (http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/2012/07/blackpowder-game-review-2nd-siege-of.html).
The project itself is proceeding rather well. There the three 9pdr guns on my workbench as well as the first eight highlanders. I tested the Black Watch (government) Tartan on them in a slightly simplified way and I'm satisfied. If I'm able to reproduce it, I'll post some WIP pictures in the coming days.
Cheers

Well... Although Concern seems to have decreased a bit, I want to keep you in the loop:
Yesterday I finished the first highlander for the next unit I want to paint: The 42nd Rgt. of Foot, later known as "Black Watch". They served in Pack's 9th Brigade at Waterloo, so they are a good follower on the to-do-list. First and foremost they are easier to paint than the 92nd ("Gordon") who wore more complicated tartan.
However I'm really pleased how the kilt turned out and I'll proceed this way. And so with no more ado here a picture which you might judge yourselves:
Some details (buttons) and the highlights habe to be done, but the kilt is finished. On the blog there are some further information about the colours and the painting technique I used.
I appreciate any comment and value any hint or clue.
-
This is a great post. You have solved my basing "Angst". Many thanks!
-
nice painting! well done :-*
-
some of smoothest clean tartan I have seen.
-
Your miniatures look very nice. I also love the fortress.
-
Actually I was hoping to be able to present the finished unit of highlanders during August. However things went another way. Because of a small campaing we're just playing I got a set of hussars on the workbench and a unit of Blues in addition. Those units aren't much interesting until now. You all should know deflashed and base-coated miniatures very well. :)
Nevertheless eight highlanders are finished and I hope you enjoy a look at them:
and a close-up of three of the privates:
This time there are few additional information on the blog. Just larger pictures. But feel free to make a visit. I'm glad about any feedback here or at Monty's Caravan: Direct Link to the post (http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/2012/07/42nd-rgt-of-foot-black-watch-2-eight.html)
During the next weeks a plan to finish another eight highlanders and twelve hussars more or less simultaneously. At least the infantrymen are on a good way and the hussar's horses have their base colours already...
-
Wow, great paintjob.
-
Hi folks,
I've working on my Napoleonic projekt constantly but temporary it was a bit difficult to present anything. Those Highlanders are a lot more work than I thought...
However I finished the next eight of them recently:
The last eight scots to fulfil the unit are piper, drummer, another ensign, a sergeant and the privates for the flank companies. I hope to have them finished before Christmas.
Additionally I finished the guns and the bases for my Royal Foot Artillery. Three six-pounders from the Victrix-set with four crewmen each:
There are some more pictures of the artillery on my blog:
http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/2012/10/weekly-news-21st-october-2012-foot.html (http://montys-caravan.blogspot.de/2012/10/weekly-news-21st-october-2012-foot.html)
Next on the workbench are the last Highlanders and then a unit of Hussars. Horses are finished already and the riders will follow after the Black Watch.
Cheers

Lovely stuff!

Always a joy to come back and look at this log.
The highlanders look extremely good fromt he tartans to the rick red of their jackets. What is not to like.
many thanks for sharing,
Allan

Thanks for the kind and encouraging comments.
Unfortunately my time for this has been dimishing lately, since it has been quite busy at work these days currently. But I stay with it and will keep you up to date.

Some more great looking figures. I like what you have done so far...I too suffer from the same ailment as you do...a full time job and family obligations that cut into my painting time. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work and tutorials

Nice work Monty, and a very good blog...inspiring....keep up the good work! ;)
-
Really nice work on all, and really impressive tartan job!
:-*
I am going for a similar idea regarding basing for my next project, and seeing another option is always good.
-
Finally I managed to finish my Black Watch unit:
Actually I finished them last year (on New Years Eve :) ) but I hadn't got the time to post that news here. However I'm happy with the result and I'm relieved that this long-term project came to an and finally.
If you like the picture above then feel free to have a look at my blog:

There I posted some more pictures and a short historical review on the 42nd Regiment of Foot.
