Can anyone suggest some inexpensive car/truck models for use as scenery for my urban city board? The figures we'll be using are 28mm and HeroClix. I currently have a large collection of matchbox cars that we use, but they can appear a bit small sometimes. I use matchbox because they are inexpensive and do the job in a pinch, but if I could find some inexpensive larger models in the right scale I'd consider investing in some...
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hotwheels did some 1:50 scale cars a while back. I grabbed a couple for my Post Apoc gangs. They scale up well but wether you can find them is another question. Here they are.

Some of the Fastlane toys at scale up well at Toys R Us. Take a mini with you for reference.
Ebay is dodgy for scales. I have gotten 1:50 or 1:48 cars that were between 1:72 to 1:32.

MattBlack:
Did you mean their HotWheels Custom Motors line of cars? Those were kind of nice for post-apoc games because they came with weapons, etc. and I did pick a couple up, but they aren't exactly cheap, and the line of models available is pretty limited (and then needs to be customized further to hide the weapon mounting points).

CVS sells toy cars roughly that scale. They run either $5 or $6 bucks. I have not seen them lately, but they had some early 20th century cars that I snagged. They match up perfectly with my 28mm pulp miniatures.
-
I am not sure what they are called, I cant remember. There was no weapons with my cars. :-[
-
IIRC , The 1/50 scale HotWheels I had were marketed as "PhatWheels". Pretty consistently and accurately scaled too going by the ones I bothered to measure .
-
I have a few in my Ultimate Alliance thread, mostly from chain stores (Big W and Kmart in Oz) and $2 Stores for under $5AUD, you just have to keep looking. Carrying an old Space Marine in my pocket helps too.
-
Do an ebay search for New Ray 1/43. Some of them are on the biggish side but the vast majority scale well for civilian rides. They also have quite a few trucks/police/fire etc. All are $2-5 US. This is what I use for my Heroclix and supers games. They look great. I have about 30 of them currently.

The toy cars at CVS are done by Kintoy die-casting. The scale varies by model from 1/32 to 1/40.

You can try converting Pixar "Cars 2" diecasts or the smaller megabloks Need for Speed kits, both in about 1:55 (I still cannot convince myself to buy Lego-like cars, but they really look better than I expected).
Both are about 6 Euro per car and thus realtivly expensive though.
EDIT: Older Scale lines I used so far were Hot Wheels G-Machines, Hot Wheels Volkswagen Classics, Hot Wheels Dropstars and Siku (but Siku only does Trucks and a Smart in 1:50).
They scale up pretty well:

All of them (http://basteltisch.blogspot.de/2011/02/mobilitat-fur-alle.html) <- Moar Klickz
And I have some wood harvesting machines from Sword Model, not very cheap (70 Bucks per piece :o ) but still nice.

Sorry for the German

Toys R Us is the place to go.
You're looking for the 1:43 cars, and they sell them in those big Bonus Boxes, so you get 8-12 of them for $10.
They also have trucks, which is nice.
I don't remember the brand name, but I can look when I get home if you wish.

I think these are the cars you mean, right DS615?

Many of the cheapest cars - the sort you find in supermarkets to placate the kids being dragged round on the weekly shop - are scaled to fit the box, not to be consistent with each other. Carry a 28mm figure with you, and you can identify ones which work.
-
There are several series of architectural models you can get in 1:50 scale. Trucks, cars, SUV's Just google for them.
http://www.microformmodels.com/newcatalog.html (http://www.microformmodels.com/newcatalog.html)
More models for architects. Pretty cheap though at $10 each. Look under 1/4" (1:48)

These are $5.00 cars from Rite Aid (I assume that they're the same as the ones from CVS). Pictures with figures for scale:

Thanks for all of the suggestions so far folks!
@proditor: I'm not too keen on the paper models (inexpensive as they are and despite their good looks) sicne I want a bit more durability.
@Heldrak: Thanks for sharing those pics! The models look great and are a great scale for the minis I'm using (many of which you used in your pics). Also thanks for sharing the paint jobs on your minis, those guys look fantastic!

I'm going to second the recommendation for the Hot Wheels 1:50 stuff. I did a match up of Bone Shaker (one of the smaller models) a few years ago at http://overloadedqueue.blogspot.com/2008/04/vroom.html (http://overloadedqueue.blogspot.com/2008/04/vroom.html). I don't think they're being sold in stores any more, but on ebay they're going for $5-10 apiece, which is decent if you can find a few from a single seller to minimize shipping. For example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HOT-WHEELS-RAT-RODS-1-50th-VW-SERIES-/221067980026?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item3378adacfa (http://www.ebay.com/itm/HOT-WHEELS-RAT-RODS-1-50th-VW-SERIES-/221067980026?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item3378adacfa) (not my auction, but a steal if you win it at that price). I also have a bunch from their Dropstars and Hot Import Nights collections.
Definitely go check out Maxxev's blog post on the subject as well, at http://www.smallcuts.net/articles/vehicle_comparison.jsp (http://www.smallcuts.net/articles/vehicle_comparison.jsp).
Though if you're looking for real superhero type cars, Corgi did a line of Batmobiles a few years ago in 1:43 scale that worked out more like 1:50. There were Batmobiles for every decade, plus cars for Robin, the Joker, Catwoman, Two Face, and even Killer Moth. Ignore the batcopter and batboat, though, as they're way too small.
Finally, Ertl did a Batwing in support of the 1989 film, and it's also an excellent piece. Just paint over the bright yellow bat symbol, hit it with a little matte finish, and do some lighter highlights around the edges. $10, maybe $15, still on card if you keep your eyes open.
-
@mrgrigson: I'm actually more interested in civilian cars for the most part, though I will need a few nice sport cars/prototype cars that can pass for superhero vehicles eventually, its the civilian cars, trucks and semis that I really want to get my mitts upon.

@Heldrak: I took a look at the CVS cars by Kinstoys, and a lot of them are 1:36 or 1:38. They look great, and seem to be a good scale, but I think I need to check out some of the 1:50th scale cars (G Machines, etc.) before I buy...

Most of the Rite Aid cars shown are marked 1:43 scale (apart from the yellow hot rod), but actual scales vary so much in the die cast car industry (particularly the cheapo ones) that marked scales are almost meaningless. Far better to take a sample figure along with you and match up the scale on the spot before making a purchase...

Good advice Heldrak, thanks. I'll try stopping by the local Rite Aid soon and will bring a couple of minis with me. :) Most of the CVS ones seemed too large.

Gotta to love the looks you get standing there holding a model up to them while looking at the toys. I had fun doing this some time ago when I went to a hobby lobby looking for some storage containers to fit some models.

It is also worth trying different Rite Aid stores (if you have more than one in your area) as some of them seem to get different stock. Also try them at different times of the year.

Here in Florida we have a CVS and Walgreens on every corner....gotta love the state of retirement people!

Take a look at this review of some cheap $2.50 cars at Dollar General right now.
The sports cars are 1/43ish but the sedans, a nice Dodge Charger and a Chrysler 300, are almost perfect 1/50.
I prefer 1/50ish scale vehicles and for my zombie town I have loaded up on the sedans, the Dodge Magnum and the pickup.

That is funny, I was about to post that I saw some at Dollar General the other day, one was a nice sedan style car...stated 1:43 but looked good for a mini game...

Hi all. Just wanted to say "Thank you!" to everyone who replied to this thread. After lots of hunting through local Rite Aid's and CVS stores, and striking out (all o the inventory here was 1/36 or 1/38 and was just a hair too big), I took Amalric and Styx's advice and stopped by a local Dollar Store. They had a mini-coop, two sedans, a station wagon and a hummer that were all the right size (1/43 scale). As mentioned they were also a lot cheaper at $2.50 each, and they all look great. I'll see if I can grab a pic or two in the near future to show how they turned out.
Now to find some police, fire, and other emergency vehicles in the same scale...

Glad it helped, I plan to buy a few also at my local stores....hell, they have one every few miles here in Florida...

Styx:
If I could see them in advance I'd ask you to pick me up some Styx! There's only the one up here in Nashua, NH, and I cleaned them out.

Tell you what, when I hit by there I will shoot you a list of what I don't pick up....or if you want tell me (or better PM me pictures) of what you have (give the car make and date) as well as a wish list...aka sports cars, pickup trucks, police/rescue, etc...I will see what I can do to grab up a few extra and you can paypal me the cost and shipping.

just had a good laugh, 17 Dollar Generals within 17 miles of where I live...
-
There should be lots of good options within that 17 mile radius then! PM sent to you regarding your offer Styx. :)

I promised some pics of the cars I picked up so far (again thanks to Styx for checking into some additional ones for me). These are not the best pictures, as they are taken with my low grade phone camera, apologies for that. In each of the photos are two figures, a GCPD Heroclix figure, and a Copplestone Casting police figure for scale reference.

Those look pretty good. What are you using for your street tiles?

Those look pretty good. What are you using for your street tiles?
@obsidian3d: The tiles are made of 1/4" MDF, and are painted flat black on 5 sides. I then print out some of the Streets of Legend from WorldWorks (http://www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?view=product&product=37)on 8" x 11" blank label sheets and lay that down on the MDF.
I've posted some pics of the results on this thread over on the Hirst Arts Forums here (http://hirstarts.yuku.com/reply/49824/Re-Modular-Urban-Gaming-Table-lots-of-pics-#.UBCJQaBdATc). The cars shown in those pics are just some 1:64 matchbox cars.
-
Minor update... went into CVS today and picked up a Dodge RAM pickup truck, scale 1:44 that should work nciely with the other cars I already picked up.

Picked up a few cars this past week, just when I am in the store I snap one off the shelf so the wife does not see it! Posted pics on my blog. Going shopping this weekend to bolster Myrlyn's and my collection....

Managed to grab a few more cars after Dollar General did a restock. I'll see if I can get some pics of them up in the near future.

Anything new? May have to stalk mine!
