Title: Question about Zulu War Brits in EotD
Post by: white knight on July 03, 2012, 10:12:42 AM
I really want to use some Zulu War British (either BTD or Empress) with EotD (including converting some zombies from the Empress plastics).

Now I know the uniform is wrong for the homeland, but would it seem like a plausible excuse to consider that with the UK overrun by the forces of evil, troops would be recalled from abroad and that, the country being in chaos, not all of those troops would have access to a change of uniform?

I reckon you should go for it.  :)

I'd also recommend the Empress figs, if only because they have these spare heads:

I you swap them out and paint the helmets blue, you might just get away with it, assuming your opponents aren't horrible button counters.  ;)

I don't even have opponents, so it shouldn't be a problem.  ;)

Well, I like the Empress figs too, but I wonder if they're not a bit small compared to the West wind and LAM figures.

I haven't seen the BTD ones (though I understand the ridges on the pith helmets are an issue with the buttoncounters), but if they are like their WW2 figures in bulk and size, they should be big enough to fit in. Of course, ordering them may be a bit of a pain.

Neither do I, so I just buy the ones I think look tasty.  :D

My VSF Naval Expedition (still WIP after 4 years...) contains a mix of Empress, Perry, Ironclad and Copplestone figures, and I reckon they all match up fairly nicely. If you don't mix them in the same unit, anyway.

Can't say I've ever seen the BTD ones in the flesh as the pics on the webstore put me off, but I'm told they match up to the old Foundry Zulu range pretty well if that's any help.

Same here. After all, if you're buying your figures based on what other people might or might not like, something's wrong. ;)

Only problem is Seb is that this country in chaos is all under the surface, covert no overt so not sure how the army en masse could work tbh. Maybe a 'retired' officers club who take a vested interest in the shadowy goings on in 1888? That way you could have a really electic mix of veterans and old guard, even a few plate armoured chaps with those empress headswops, (as full plate is available as an equipment option).

Full plate, umberella and a pith helmet....that'll work ;)

With at the head of the club, my copy of Colonel Marbles in his dress uniform with the umbrella.  ;)

As for covert vs overt, I see no reason not to change fluff to suit my needs. >:D

lol very good.

Maybe 1898 when things have got a little uncomfortable on the home front and the queen (gwad bless 'er) has abandoned the colonies as they are truely the Empire of the Dead.

dun dun da!

(£5 for 8 empress heads... erm is that good value?)

Would it be that 'off' I was considering using Ironclad miniatures Grenadier guards

Given the present situation in the UK I think it's quite plausible to be over-run with the forces of chaos and darkness. We usually vote for them.

I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter what buttoncounters will say I'll just use the figures that I like. Thanks for all the input. 8)

So what are you planning on using them as? Gentelmen's Club? Curious about the background...

Well, if you mean what I'll use them as for EotD, I'll have to get back on you as my rulebook hasn't arrived yet.

But I'll probably collect more than is needed for that ruleset.  ;)

People do make soldiers in Home Service uniforms.

(Course, the first two appear to be armed with the new fangled Lee Metford bolt action rifle, introduced in 1888 and so very cutting edge in EotD.)

The thing is, I really want the Zulu war look, it's how I picture them in my head and the homeland troops just don't hit the same spot.

So I'm just going to go with the flimsiest of excuses and paint the figures I want instead of the ones that would be historically accurate.

I had the same idea of using Bitish regulars in EotD, I would love to see how yours come out. In a normal game (100 shillings I think) you can have 3 blokes with rifles and both a President plus his vice which is not bad... I plan on using a mixture of Home service (redoubt) and overseas with the 'overseas' in their Khaki colours, haven been recalled from Africa

Also, could be soldiers diverted from mustering or off transport bound away from the homeland.

Covered transport and special instructions (in game) to keep them from sight of the locals, before the lads are shipped off (to the Northwest Territory, to the Sudan, to wherever you wish) from whence one can expect them to never return.

Or does that not make sense in EotD?

This is a game with vampires, werewolves and steampunk elements. Historical accuracy is not the point my friend. :) Have fun with your choices.
