Title: Pirate Ships....What do you use?
Post by: Pappa Midnight on October 11, 2006, 10:38:50 PM
I recently dug out an old "Village Green" resin ship which was lurking in my attic ( along with lots of half finished projects). She' a bit beaten up and needs a repaint by I think she's not too bad.

Village Green went out of business a while ago, but the ships are still being produced by StrongHold Miniatures in the UK.

http://www.stronghold-miniatures.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Village_Green_1.html

The thing I like about the ship is that you get all the cannons, swivel guns etc. with it. The only things I've added are the figure head and some plastic masts and sails from a model ship kit ( you get wooden dowels in the set)

I've also bought a "Flying Dutchman" from the PotC by Megabloks. She's Huge and not really suitable for gaming but with some conversion work she'll make a nice display piece!!!

I've added a Pirates Folder to my Gallery at Displaced Miniatures where I'll post my work in progress.

Any how, whats everyone else using for their ships?

I plan to make my own. I want to do Napoleonic naval first to get the hang  of building gaming ships and then I'll do some pirates. The pirate figures have been hanging around for a number of years waiting for some paint.
it won't be anytime soon though, i'll have to be in the right mood.

here are some of my ships.  The huge paper ship is from worldworks.  The smaller ship is a home made one of cardboard based losely on the Gary Chalk article on WI and posted on the foundry website.  The little boats are also from worldworks, from the pirate island set.

That WorldWorks ship is might impressive Kai! :o

I may have to take a look at it since I will need one soon. How is the level of difficulty in assembling?

not so difficult as time consuming.  I have not done the masts yet which looks like it could be difficult though...

whats cool about it is you can take bits off and it has interiors.  You can download the tour from their website too see the components of the kit

I have one of the Dixon Sloops which is used as a merchant ship for my victorian games. I believe these are sadly no longer available.  :(

I have the OG Man o War, a lovely model but a beast due to the size and it carries 30+ guns . I was bought it as an anniversary present which was very kind but sadly everyone else moved on from Pirates so I was left with a huge ship and nothing to broadside. It tends though seldom to be used as a terrain piece for pirates to fight over. I have around a 100 crew still to paint and am waiting for Artizan/crusader to bring out marines etc as I dont like the OG marines too much.

I also have 4 flagship sloops and brigs which now will see use in my Aztec/Conquistador games as they are a funny scale and as such would represent gun ships for siege games

The fact that there are not that many ships available made me decide to sculpt my own and cast them in resin.
I made 4 so far.
The sloop, the medium trading vessel (also a pimped version)
The merchant vessel and the buccaneer ship.
After the Buccaneer vessel I took a time out on the ships and worked on the modular dock system and the one person barrel subs.

I will get back on the boats after the 2 conventions in November that I will attend.
I was invited for them to show my work so I even started to cast a modest stock.

In November I will start working on some medium sized gun ships, some more barrel subs and I even hope to release my first airship before the end of November.

Also this weekend I will finish my next extension for the dock set but that is something else.

Oh and any ideas on possible new ships/subs/docks/air ships is always welcome.

Greetings
Geboom

geboom, I have already seen your website a few days ago. excellent work!

I've never seen a ship that I liked much enough to spend a lot of money for it. Someday I'll try to build my own ship from scratch. But for the moment I don't want to add another project to my list of unfinished things...

Not pirate ships per se, but ships for 28mm gaming none-the-less. Lord of the Rings actually (er...  is Lord of the Rings one of those games that can not be named?).

Anyway, I also have articles on how to build them here:

Oh my! That VG ship ist superb, Pappa Midnight! Had seen it in an advert in an  old Wargames Illustrated, but only as line art... just might need a jib, but that´s just me as a real-life sports sailor talking. Handling would be much easier just like it is.

I usually can´t be bothered with available kits, as they usually don´t match my rather specific taste, so for any setting, I usually build my own. Recently, I built  a smallish Brig for "Golden Age of Piracy Games", the "Lady Luck", feared vessel of the infamous Captain Caroline Hummingbird:

Thanks for all the replies and some SERIOUS EYECANDY! I can see myself stealing..........I mean getting inspiration from them

Here are some sailing ship plans you can grab off the web. You may need to change the scale for some of them. The first one, for example, is meant to be made from a refrigerator box and is big enough for kids to actually play in! It can just as easily be made from a shoebox.

Really simple -- http://tinyurl.com/3ttrhn
Kinda simple -- http://tinyurl.com/44dsxf
Not so much simple -- http://tinyurl.com/34srjd

Hi Papa Midnight,

I love your work and your horror web group so much that I have you linked from my blog!

I have lots of pirate posts here including shot of my some of my ships:

http://6mm-minis.blogspot.com/search/label/Pirates

I also have a Photobucket album here with lots of pirate goodness!

BUT... I haven't photographed anything but a small portion of my collection, which much be remedied!

Great ship...

I'm currently working on a resin pirate ship from a company named "Wargames Ruins" which is no longer in business today (nomen est omen?   )

As building a resin ship is not everybody's cup of tea, I decided to do some work-in-progress pics and publish them with some comments on my website. Here are the teasers:

From start ...

through finishing the ship's hull ...

over to the details:

Next bunch of photos after building the masts, then painting, sails and some rigging at the end.

But maybe some more weeks will be needed ...
