Warren Ellis is doing a comic to be entitled "Ignition City", which he describes as "Flash Gordon meets Deadwood", with the titular metropolis being a circular artificial island, the rim a ring a launchpads, the interior a shanty town of ramshackle buildings and hovels built from "Flash Gordon" style rocketships. I rather like this idea for "Fantastic Worlds" games, but since I have low-to-zero imagination: Anyone got any ideas on what structures to build? A rocketship-house, yes, a bar, obviosly, but what else?

An unregulated electrical power plant.
A hydro-agriculture algae tank farm (for thems not lucky enough to be able to get food pills).
The nearby still that makes algae vodka.
The Dance Hall and its Spoiled Comets.
A rocket garage/chop shop.
Look, basically any slum is going to replicate its legitimate counterpart, only through a combination of improvised and jury-rigged structures and quick-and-dirty operators. It's also going to be open about its vices - what, you'll think less of them?
What would you find in Deadwood? What would that look like in Hugo Gernsbeck's head?
Edit: That came off a bit harsher than I intended. Sorry for the "Look"

Got to be a law enforcement station/marshal's office - perhaps Thunderbird 3 stylee but with top of rocket removed and Flightpad in place.
Town hall - two rocket bodies as towers at each end with horizontal body as middle section
Backstreet PI Office?
Brothel - tacky decor. Rocket body with some balconies, windows cut into body into with swagged curtains and perhaps late 1800s style wrought iron lamps fitted to entrance.
Fuel refinery/storage - old rocket patched bodies used for fuel storage
Radio station - rocket body skeleton as transmission tower
Scrap yard
If its an Island, why not some docks?

It's a neat idea. Still, it must be very depressing in Warren Ellis's head given the stuff he writes about.
Think about the wild west but also depression era america with it's shanty towns, refugees, gangsters and the like. Just with rayguns and rocket ships.

It sounds like some of the sets from Firefly/Serenity might also provide some good ideas. That had an old west meets lost in space sort of feel. :)
