Title: Twilight2000 - The Fate of Doctor Zoran
Post by: V on 25 February 2008, 11:07:51 AM
From my ongoing TW2K campaign...

Finding Dr. Zoran...

Deep in the South American jungle, Dr. Zoran has been researching a new bio-fuel compound. As the area is politically unstable his safety is in the hands of 'Whitewater Security', a well-known PMC outfit. Working at a remote camp on the Panavia-Terra da Selva border, Dr. Zoran has finally discovered a bio-compound that could replace fossil fuels. By chance, his work has also uncovered a large diamond mine, previously undiscovered.

The area of operations... The camp and diamond mine can be seen in the centre.

Close-up of the camp area around the mine entrance...

News of the discovery spread to the two countries, both claiming the mine as on their territory, and both sending small military forces to back up their claims! Dr. Zoran felt safe as he had no interest in the diamonds... However the same could not be said for the Whitewater personnel who were guarding him. As the Panavian Regulars approached from the south and the militia and police forces of Terra da Selva arrived from the north, the PMC unit decided to do their best to prevent either side from taking possession of the Diamond mine.

The PMC deploys ready for action...

Panavian Special Forces watch the camp from the jungle...

Dr. Zoran begins to worry that his PMCs seem eager for a fight...

The table at the start of the game, as seen from the Panavian border...

As the two sides headed for the PMC compound, it seemed inevitable that a three-way clash would soon occur. Dr. Zoran decided to wait it out in one of the huts and as troops began to move accross the area a huge helicopter flew overhead. None of the three antagonists on the ground knew who was inside it...

Terra de Selvan Special Operations Police troops begin moving in the jungle...

Fredericose Merkur, charismatic leader of the TSM (Terra de Selva Militia), gives his men a rousing speech as they head into action against the hated Panavians and the PMCs...

As the helicopter landed it disgorged a large number of Serbian Special Forces, with the mission of kidnapping Dr. Zoran and taking him back to Europe! Now the PMCs faced three threats and the noose began to tighten around their neck...

The PMC sniper spots his first target... seconds later the man lay dying on the ground.

PMCs defend the compound... and the diamonds...

The PMC command team begins picking off 'enemy' troopers...

The tabletop as the Serb SF make a surprise appearance... and my dog chilling...

Sporadic gunfire erupted accross the area... PMC fired on Panavian soldiers... They fired back... Terra de Selvan forces fired at the PMCs and they fired back... and just about everyone tried to fire on the Serbs!

The well defended compound...

PMCs laying down fire on TSM forces...

Panavian Special Forces about to ambush a TSM unit... The ensuing firefight virtually wiped out a complete TSM section.

As things began to hot up all three attackers tried to push into the PMC compound... and casualties on all sides began to mount. Only the Serbs seemed to get through without too much loss as the Panavian and Terra de Selvan forces took heavy casualties as they fought each other and the PMCs.

Serbs approach the compound... unaware they are being watched...

Terra de Selvan Militia attack along the ridge only to be fired at from the rear by Panavian troops...

Panavian forces try to storm the compound... This action would eventually lead to such heavy losses that the Panavia troops would flee the area!

Serb SF head for the compound under fire from the PMCs and a Panavian MG team that should have known better...

As Panavia fled the battle due to losses the Terra de Selvan forces closed in on the PMC compound and the Serbs closed in from the other side... an impromptu treaty between the TSM leader and the Serb Captain saw both sides close in on their objectives and begin the elimination of the few remaining PMCs. Despite the occasional shot at each other, Terra de Selvan forces took the mine and the Serbs closed in on Dr. Zoran...

Dr. Zoran decides to make a bid for freedom...

The first attempt to stop the escape ends with Dr. Zoran being wounded and several dead Serb soldiers...

However Dr. Zoran's luck doesn't last and he is soon captured by the Serb troops and quickly sent back to the waiting helicopter.

And there the game ended... Terra de Selva gained a diamond mine, Panavia fled intot he jungle to lick its wounds and Whitewater PMC would need a whole load of new employees... Meanwhile the Serbs took Dr. Zoran back to Europe and to where he would begin his adventures... Luckily this game ended correctly to be the prequel to our on-going 'Dr. Zoran Campaign'!

Capturing Dr. Zoran...

Not long after the main fighting drew to a stalemate in Europe and the situation began to worsen, some smaller states at the sidelines began to look out for themselves and distance their nations from the struggle between NATO and the Neo-Soviets.

In the Balkans an uneasy peace took hold until a fateful day near the end of 2005.

By pure chance the Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian governments all found out that the world famous Dr. Zoran was hiding out near the village of Kusla. With him was his formula for a new synthetic fuel source and he was in the process of playing NATO and the Soviets off against each other to secure the best price...

However the Balkan states had other ideas... All three sent a force to capture the Doctor and recover his formula. So one misty morning in October 2004, three combat groups descended on Zoran's compound.

The Bosnians arrived first in their BTRs, followed by the Croatians on foot with the Serbs arriving by a 4 x 4 and a helicopter!

The ensuing three way gun battle didnt go well for the Bosnians who decided to start firing on both the Croats and Serbs and came off worse... Add to this the gunfire from Zoran's mercenaries and it was a chaotic gun battle to say the least!

One Bosnian APC tried to shoot down the only Croat with an RPG to only have its gun jam... The return fire from the RPG gunner hit the fuel tank and the BTR exploded in a ball of flame, killing half of the Bosnian force who were still inside! The rest of the Bosnians tried to hit the Serbs in the rear as they stormed the compound but they too came off worse... With a well timed burst of fire taking down four of the remaining Bosnians.

In the ensuing confusion, Zoran tried to run, only to be shot and wounded by the Serbian sniper. As he lay bleeding on the ground, the Serbs bundled him into their 4 x 4 and made a bid for freedom...

All seemed over at this point with a Serbian victory assured... Until one Bosnian, nicknamed 'The Bulletproof Bosnian' for the amount of shots fired at him without hitting him, fired a burst from his AK47 at the 4 x 4 as it tried to exit the table edge... He shot out the front tyre and the 4 x 4 filpped and rolled... right off the table!

It was a highly enjoyable game and very cinematic. With some amusing incidents. The Serbs couldnt seem to hit anything but we lost count of how many times their body armour saved them! The Croats did very little other than killing off an ambush force from Zoran and blowing up the Bosnian APC. They then also began firing at the Serbs! The Croats lost only two men but managed to kill the most opposing troops... Ten with one RPG round! As for the Bosnians... They came off the worse... three-quarters of their men were killed and they lost both APCs... Not a good day for Bosnia!

Rescuing Dr. Zoran!

Last Friday NATO forces succesfully rescued the scientist, Dr. Zoran, from the clutches of Balkan marauders.

He is now under NATO protection after a bloody battle.

Dr. Zoran and his captors...

NATO SF Hummvee followed by a PMC Hummvee move towards the town...

Zoran's captors call in the local militia...

One of the NATO teams debuss... This team was to be wiped out by the militia...

Militia men take cover as NATO attacks the town, two militia men had just been killed, one rather spectacuarly by a 40mm grenade to the chest!

More militia men cower as 'Bernard The Lucky' takes aim at a Humvee with his RPG...

The NATO relief coloumn arrives to return Dr. Zoran to safety...

Was another fun game... The marauder/militia types almost had the game in the bag after killing one of four NATO SF teams, but a turn of crazy luck and Brian's consistently annoying high dice rolls saw 8 militia die in one turn of firing... Two of them to .50 cal headshots...

Great game and Dr. Zoran is now on his way to Brandenburg Cantonment... But will he make it?

A certain Colonel Femerov has other ideas.... Stay tuned for Episode 4!

Wow. Top gaming tableage you've got going there. That's how to do the old felt cloth thing and make it look good, and no mistake. I couldn't do that, looks like far too much cleaning up to do afterwards!  :)  I guess I'll have to be satisfied with my layouts looking like golf courses.

Got to go and work, so I only had a quick look at the pics. I'll come back and read the words later.

Its all in 20mm! My preferred scale for WW2 and Moderns due to the amount of stuff available in the scale.

All figures from Liberation, apart from Dr. Zoran who is a CP Models figure.

The roads are made from painted fibreboard.

Now I have to ask a silly question, because I'm Danish and not familiar with the word: What exactly is fibreboard??

I think it's what we call 'masonite' board, then... one side is smooth, and the other side resembles artists canvas...?

Yes, that sounds like the stuff.  An almost glossy smooth side and a rough textured side.

It's V's amazing stuff over on the Guild that is driving me kicking and screaming into 20mm sci-fi (God's TRUE scale). Just need to shift some of the lead heap to fund the scale-shift…
