Title: Let the Bullets Fly Chinese Film
Post by: Von Stroheim on 20 August 2012, 07:11:35 PM
Apparently one of the highest grossing Chinese films of all time - it is set in the Warlord era.

Looks similar to the Good Bad And Weird Korean film

Could be good but I've been disappointed with a lot of Chinese flicks that looked good in the trailers over the past 5 to 10 years. Maybe it's saturation, maybe the magic is just gone - at least for now :?

Loved the Good, Bad and Weird.
Are there any other Chinese movies set 1920/30s that are worth tracking down and watching?

I like the look of that. The Good The Bad and The Weird is a cracking film. this looks very similar (rip off?)- Still worth a watch.

Ok, so this is on Netflix and I watched about half of it so far.  This is no "The Good, the Bad and the Weird".  While it starts off with that potential it morphs into more of a pale "Pulp Fiction."  And I do mean pale.  I stopped half way through and I would be hard pressed to continue it at this point.

Just my humble opinion, and we all know what they say about opinions... ;)

Michelle Yeoh as a distaff Indiana Jones in a film variously known in English as "Magnificent Warriors" or "Dynamite Fighters":

"Peking Opera Blues", a terrific film from Tsui Hark (taking a break from fantasy swordplay): political intrigue and backstage comedy. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090952/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090952/)

"Miracles", an atypical Jackie Chan film.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098019/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098019/)

"Raise the Red Lantern", much more art-house.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101640/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101640/)

I just got 1911 with Jacki Chan (his 100th film) and although I haven't watched it yet it does seem to be rather good.

If anyone can, Jackie Chan can  ;D

cheers

I would absolutely second this opinion. Not great.

1911 is not bad, a little heavy with the nationalism perhaps, and about 1\3 too long. Some good action scenes though.

I don't want my copy of this. If anyone wants to pay postage they can have it. PM me if you are interested.

A forthcoming film, but (again) Chow Yun Fat's The Last Tycoon looks rather splendid. It's 1900s–30s Shanghai, charting the rise of "Big-Eared" Du Yuesheng (it was originally called Once Upon a Time in Shanghai – a clash with a film releasing sooner caused the title to change).

Decent teaser trailer:

Gangs of Shanghai? Again, the trailer looks mildly interesting but the movie... No high hopes here. Was that Sammo Hung BTW in the long black coat and a fedora there in a blink-and-you-miss-it moment at ca. 0:54?

Even Wong Kar-Wai is trying his hand at making a historical adventure movie. This looks like to me more @ kung fu than @ bullet ballet tho.

I can honestly say that its a dreadful film! I can see why Rob passed it on :D

In the same spirit, if anyone else is prepared to give it a go i'll send on in turn

I've just ordered The White Son of the Desert which i have a little more hope for ..  lol
