Title: Ideas for Weird War & Cthulhu Adventures in WW2
Post by: modiphius on August 21, 2012, 08:04:48 PM
Hi folks I'm looking for cool ideas for our Achtung! Cthulhu setting so if anyone has developed WW2 scenarios or campaigns with a Cthulhu or weird war theme get in touch - we even give you some cash if you fancy writing it, otherwise you could earn a credit and a freebie!

We're also working on a pimped out supplement for Achtung! Cthulhu Savage Worlds allowing you to play a whole company of troops vs the horrors unleashed by the Nazi's. If you fancy helping playtest let me know!

I don't see the Elder Ones needing the help of the crooked cross to enslave the world.  I think once the Big O is awake, everyone will try to stop him be it fascist, commie or capitalist.

There ya go!  A joining of nations in fighting the larger evil.  Still don't see the Reds fighting alongside the Jackboots but this is Weird War so have at it.

Keep it weird,
Brian

I do think it's most often the other way around. It's possible to imagine someone crazy or deluded enough to think that they can actually control the Great Old Ones -- or indeed even the Outer Gods. The first Hellboy movie plays on this idea (tho Rasputin himself of course knew what he was doing), as does Charles Stross' The Atrocity Archive. I would say that makes one scenario to consider for a game too, actually, albeit hardly an original one.

Once (even just) Cthulhu awakes, everybody will stop being sane, or that's the implication anyway. If the real God-calibre thingies would get involved, it's more @ "the idiot Chaos blew Earth’s dust away". Which is why I don't really think marrying the genius of Providence's mythos to a battle game is a sterling idea in the 1st place :?

ETA: this is quite timely...

I do find the concept very appealing, sure, no-one but a nihilist of epic proportions would believe that manifesting one of the bigger nasties could be a good idea, but the notion that individuals or nations would seek power from one of the lesser beings seems a pretty reasonable premise (Hellboy, as previously mentioned, or another Stross story 'A Colder War').

Also check out the novel 'Delta Green: Denied to the Enemy' - it's literally set within the Cthulhu Mythos and takes place during World War II.

There were real plans to sign up the still under arms German units at the end of the war and take on Russia, but they realized it was sheer madness with the huge number of Russian armies

Haha love Dork Tower! Yes you do need to be careful with Cthulhu awakening, the idea really is that just his idle dream thoughts are enough to cause plenty of chaos on Earth, there should be PLENTY of threat before even his eyelids flicker let alone striding the earth!

We've been careful to ensure the adventures are full of mystery and exploration - what you can do is have the armed forces fighting it out to allow windows of opportunity to adventurers doing the clever stuff!
