Title: Doctor Who Miniatures - Robot - Episode 075
Post by: captain apathy on 01 September 2012, 03:25:12 PM
Ok, not the best episode, but still a favorite of mine.  I wanted to share some pictures of the Kettlewell K1 Robot, part of the Doctor Who action figures Classic Series Wave 1, that I acquired compared to my other 28mm Docotor Who miniatures.  I think he looks pretty spiffy as the super-sized version of K1 in the last episode of the series.  See what you think.

The problem, Captain, is that your model is so much more convincing than the BBC's special effects!  The clamps look just the right size to hold your 28mm Sarah (is that the old Citadel one?).

Updated the blog link... oops.

LOL... thanks.  Yeah the effects were pretty bad.

I believe the Doctor and Sarah Jane are the FASA miniatures, but I may be wrong.  I have had them a long time.

I think that's right.  They were issued by Citadel in the UK with slotta-tabs and by FASA in the US with solid bases (North American casting was by RAFM).  Harlequin (now Black Tree) copied the poses of those two, but the earlier versions were a bit livelier.

Yup.  Google to the rescue.  I just confirmed that myself.  Cool.  Thanks.

I had one as a kid, plus tom baker doc, the tardis with the interior the revolved and a leather bikini companion. All lost over the years sadly :(

Ah, the Denys Fisher range!  Allegedly, the Doctor reused a head from a Gambit doll prepared for a New Avengers range that never got the go-ahead, while Louise Jameson was startled by her doll's proportions.  Kettlewell's robot did quite well, comparatively.

The one Captain Apathy used is from Character Toys.  If I remember rightly, different components came as extras with other 6" dolls (the head with one figure, the right leg with another, and so on), rather than being sold as a complete item itself, which is why it's a bit of a pig to get hold of.

Persons of Commander Vyper's vintage (and mine) may also have nostalgic memories of this jigsaw:

Multiple Robot action!  It even inspired a Bernice Summerfield audio play from Big Finish:

Got the Sontaran one too, but never tracked the Zygon one down - all before my time of course :D

Nice title for that Big Finish adventure - not seen that before!

I don't get nostalgic of those classic series merchandise things, as I started watching doctor who with the 2005 series. But I have seen Tom Baker's complete first season, and a few other episodes of the classic series. I do like the retro style of those merchandise items, though! And it's a great idea using the 5" K1 robot as the large version of the robot!

I had all the action figures that came with the Robot parts still on card. I was going to use him as a Giant Robot for a miniatures game too. Then I found out how much they were going for and sold them. I made a car payment with the proceeds and still had change left to buy a couple miniatures. Glad someone else had the idea.
