Title: fed up with stupid blog posts & ebay listings.
Post by: redzed on September 14, 2012, 02:10:11 AM

I am totally fed up with clicking links on the LAF only to be told that ..
Quote
"click on my blog for all the info"
.
STOP IT, it's f'ing annoying.

From now on posters should put the term "(BLOG)" in the topic title otherwise the post will be deleted >:(

and while we are on the subject of things annoying...

People who post 'Figures etc going cheap' etc, only when you click on the post it's an ebay listing. >:(

from now on,   all ebay listings should include the term "(ebay)" in the topic title or the post will be deleted and the poster will not only be shot but banned as well.

I agree. I believe It´s acceptable to put on LAF at least some pictures or an abstract so we can decide if it´s worth to follow the link.

I would go as far as demanding 2 or 3 pics  ;)

But yes, I find it annoying as well. I wrote a good topic about that on my blog...

I think it says in the rules that if people post links you shouldn't ask for pics. I know this isn't a specific ask from a person. I fully understand the whole Ebay thing as I don't do Ebay but is it really wasting that much time. You've come up with some nice suggestions though. :)

from now on,   all ebay listings should include the term "(ebay)" in the topic title or the post will be deleted and the poster will not only be shot but banned as well.

I've always done that, it's just common courtesy on any forum that doesn't have dedicated auction boards (ie everywhere but TMP).  You don't want to look at my auctions, that's fine, but I sell to enough LAF members that I'm not going to stop listings things here.

I've always done that,
what? put 'ebay' in the title or not put 'ebay' in the title?

I would like the 'OPTION' on whether I look at your auction or not.

has anyone asked you not to post your sales?

is really hard work to put 'ebay' in the title? I've just typed it out and it took less than a second.

I always post all pictures and the story here and link to my blog is available but not neccessary. I want people to be able to read the story here... That's why this forum is in the first place... If people like your stories, pics etc. They might read your blog anyway. So I agree mostly.

Easy on redzed, is it really that hard to click on the link, determine it's Ebay and hit the back button?

Let's be nice to each other - your the one demanding people stop doing something - they aren't demanding you look at their blog or auction.

If I link to my blog I always give at least a few teaser pics - what is wrong with keeping other images on the blog?

You said "From now on posters should put the term "(BLOG)" in the topic title otherwise the post will be deleted " isn't this a little harsh and against the spirit of LAF?
Title: Re: FED UP WITH STUPID BLOG POSTS!!!!!! AND BLOODY EBAY

Actually, I totally agreed with redzed!

I don't see anything wrong with posting a summarised version and a selection of pix in a topic, with  a note to check the blog for more details. I also have no issue with people putting blog links in their signatures.

However, I do have issue with people who post nothing more than a teaser or even just a link to their blog.

The reason I find it so irritating is that LAF is a forum, not a blogroll. If people don't post any proper content and discussion, then there's not much point is there?

As for ebay auctions, I also find it deeply irritating to click on a "for sale" thread only to find a load of ebay links.

You know why? Because if I want to bid on ebay for something, I'll just go to ebay and search for items of that nature to bid on. The entire reason I might be interested in the thread in the first place is to bypass ebay and trade directly with somebody.

If people insist on listing ebay auctions, I would encourage them to at least have the courtesy of posting pictures of what they're selling in the thread itself.

Anyway, I just want to finish this whinge by noting that LAF is very open and welcoming, and that if people want to come here and look around, I don't want the topics they're interested in leading them off elsewhere again for the content. I want those people to (hopefully) stay, join up, and join in!

I agree with Redzed. Personally I find the proliferation of threads where an appetizing title results in a one line post 'go see my blog', infuriating.
LAF is about content: Ideas, pictures, games, modelling, reports, painting and so on.
If more and more people simply post links out to their own content, rather than creating content here on this forum, then the forum becomes just an empty shell and eventually people will stop coming.

You said "From now on posters should put the term "(BLOG)" in the topic title otherwise the post will be deleted " isn't this a little harsh and against the spirit of LAF?

However, I can tell you (having had this very debate many times amongst the moderators), the Prof agrees with Furt  :)

The official ruling is here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=29435.0

Posts that are just a link to a blog add nothing to LAF IMHO, and take traffic away from the site.

I agree that posters should have the courtesy to post at least a teaser photo.

Add what you have :)
Besides, unless you're running a blog that generates money and is desperate for the cash, you can probably post the whole entry here and get far more feedback and praise than to hide it off somewhere. And people will probably go to your blog and read more in the end.

I agree with RedZed (despite the capital letters). Courtesy and giving people the option to look at your thread :)
However, it doesn't upset me as much as the bazaar-cowboys filling up page after page with their stuff and never ever giving a donation to LAF:
Title: Re: FED UP WITH STUPID BLOG POSTS!!!!!! AND BLOODY EBAY

Pix or no pix, the post should have content that's worthy of posting on it's own merits.

Links, or uninformative/shallow "teasers" do not fall into this category IMHO.

If pix are available, and integral to the content, they should be clearly linked/included at the discretion of the poster.

For ebay sales threads however, 99% of people have pictures of what they're selling available - because they've put the pictures up on the auction page itself. To not put them up here at the very least is just outright rude. Not not mention my earlier feelings about ebay auction links being posted at all.

In fact, the only time I'd be okay with an ebay auction link is if it is to highlight a very rare or unusual item - like an original pre-production unreleased lead Epic Warlord Titan for example (last partial one sold on ebay a few years ago for something like £700...).

Speaking of forum rules, shouldn't this be on the "About Forum" board?   See also the forum rules about acting politely and not using all caps in titles. ::)

Like others, I've raised the blog point before and the Prof has made his ruling.

But the amount of traffic on the forum is increasing, and it is getting more and more irritating.  Of a morning, after marking everything on the bazaar as read (because I have no money to buy anything), I still find typically 3 pages of unread post titles since the previous evening.  Being out of work, I have more time to look through them than most, but even so I'm having to be more selective.  So If I click on a "blog advert" post, that may be at the expense of seeing something from someone who has gone to the trouble of posting substantively.

The best I can offer is the following set of guidelines that I'm following now, and which others might like to consider adopting:

1. If a LAF post has a précis of a blog entry and a picture or two, with a note that more can be found on the blog, I consider that as appropriate conservation of bandwidth.  I may well follow the blog link if I'm interested.

2. If a LAF post contains only an admonition to go and read a blog, I will not follow on to the blog, so the poster has been wasting his time as well as mine.

3. If I click on repeated "blog advert" posts from the same poster, I will not open any further LAF posts from that person.

If I ever have money again, I'll adopt a similar approach to Bazaar posts.

If enough of us act this way, it ceases to be worthwhile to make posts of the offensive kind: they don't generate enough blog traffic or ebay bids.

If we don't, it shows that, collectively, we aren't all that offended after all.

We had “Links but no pics” debate already and we have some ruling there:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=29435.0
I definitely not keen about starting that discussion again, so please leave it.

Also nothing is going to be deleted.

Though I get your point, Shaun, and I am going to have a thinking session about the [blog]-note-in-the-title-demand. This probably could be a possible solution.

Ebay posts..I’m working on some specific Bazaar rules. Some things will be changed for sure also for Ebay-auctions. Don’t expect anything very soon as I still need some time. But definitely this year, it’s a promise. So please be patient. Everything (or almost ) is going to be good soon ;)

The way things are going lately LAF now stands for the "Lead Auction Forum."  :)

I come here to see photos of my colleagues minis. That is all I am really interested in. All the chatty stuff I can find elsewhere. It's the content which makes this forum stand apart.

Of course, can't do much about what folks post, and with the increasing membership that comes to a lot of stuff. But trying to find the "content" is becoming difficult.  :'(

Is there any way that threads such as the Bazar of Obscurities can be eliminated from the "unread posts since last visit?" Perhaps as an option in the User Profile?

How said, Ray, things will be changed. They won't be disappearing from "the unread posts" list but you definitely will be able to differ Bazaar threads from the rest.

I have nothing against the Bazar and in fact have used it myself, btw.

But anything which can help users like myself zoom in on the real content quickly will be gratefully appreciated.

If we lost the Bazaar my wife and bank account would be happy  ;)

I post links occasionally to my blog.....eg when I went on hols and there's about 30 pics of a medieval French castle....posting all the pics here would surely take up a load of space (technical phobia precludes me going into more of an explanation on that)......

I tend to do that anyway but I agree with the sentiment of most that it is bloody annoying, especially as my work hours can be rather bloody long sometimes. So having a finite amount of time to spend here (never really go anywhere else), I have to pick and choose, which might mean I miss out on a gem (it's happened a few times now  :( ).

I'm sure Alex will come up with a rational solution for the problem  :)

All I can add is my support to the idea that links to blogs with nothing else is terribly annoying...a couple of teasers pics and a summary go a long way to peaking my interest...but I never click on a link with no context....anyone could be putting that in...Ie. hackers... and hoping you click on it.

That said I find the eBay link thing even MORE annoying...I personally dislike eBay and only use it as a final resort for things I can't find and purchase from reasonable folks here and on other forums....so I would fully support a rule that requires the word eBay in any listing that leads off site for sales.

As to the amount of traffic in the bazaar right now....I think that there is a seasonal flow to these things....lots of people sell off stuff toward the end of summer (here in the N. hemisphere)....and then spend the cold months building up their lead pile again...like a chipmunk and his seed stash... lol

But above all... I Would like to say that despite the few bum members who only are here to sell things or post links to their blog...this is still the best place on the web for informative and supportive discussion about the things that we all love....little toy men and the battles they fight... ;D

Thanks to Prof and staff for making it the great place it is and thinking about ways to make it even better!

Cheers,

Blue

I must admit I find it annoying that certain users have the cheek to use the forum as a way to farm traffic for their eBay auctions. Especially if those threads account for 90% of their posts. I've used the Bazaar a few times but I do so to offer good deals to members here while at the same time clearing out unwanted stuff or generating a bit of spare cash for new projects (that I can later sell when they fail :-)). Linking to eBay just seems a bit cynical as it's an attempt to bump up the price through traffic.

I quite often post a link to my blog with only a sentance or two explaining what the content is.  It does generate blog traffic, some people leave comments on the blog but most do so on the forum

I don't think that I have ever had a comment criticising the practice

I also post fairly regularly on the various boards

I very rarely follow links to ebay auctions but I can't say that they bother me at all

Title: Re: fed up with stupid blog posts & ebay listings.
Post by: gnomehome on September 14, 2012, 02:21:00 PM
It would seem almost half of my posts are in the Bazaar, which I do use a  lot. Mostly for buying stuff, lately I also sold some things.

I agree that a mention of 'EBAY' in the topic title would reduce the annoyance a bit, if I want to use Ebay, I'll go through Ebay. I never, ever click through to Ebay and I'm actively avoiding some post in the bazaar from people who frequently list things which turn out to be Ebay listings. Especially those users who exactly post the same on *every* miniatures board you care to visit.

'Bumping' own post on items that don't sell, also can be a tad annoying as are flooding the Bazaar with consecutive posts instead of posting all items together at once. I try to avoid doing that, and I hope I haven't annoyed people with my listings.

For me a ban on ebay listing shouldn't be imposed, but a gentle reminder to list 'Ebay' in the title should do the trick.

The blog posts haven't bothered me, but I'm sure they will from now on  ;).

For me it's not so much the sales threads - I'm fine with the ebay links.  I'd prefer the meat of a show-off post to be in the actual post, rather than necessitating a click-through.

That said, I'm sure my 20-image batreps annoy some as well.

Admittedly, I post to my blog more than I post here, but whenever I post with a link to the blog I try to post the grist of what I've done with a link along the lines of 'for more waffle, look at the blog' so that you can see what I've done without neccesarily having to follow a link...
I can see the annoyance with the ebay links though (especially when they're posted in multiple boards and clog up your 'unread posts since your last visit' link), but it's easy enough to close the tab and move onto something else...

Blog posts have been discussed ad infinitum on the moderators' board. I used to delete them on the boards I moderated because they annoyed me so much but this was apparently wrong so now I let them go.
Ebay posters are just scum, filthy leeching scum who should be banned.
There's too much crap on this forum now, films, books, tv, pets, family, holidays, music; most of it without the slightest connection to the main focus of the board.
I read LAF less and less now, the noise to content ratio is almost as bad as TMP which I don't visit at all anymore.

The Prof is against having rules about too much stuff and I agree with him but, when the people coming here refuse to use their common sense to keep within the subject boundaries of the forum or worse, blatantly use the place as nothing more than a big free shop window, I begin to wonder if more rules aren't actually a necessity.

Content free posts are spam.

Here's a thought.

If it's do-able under the forum's underlying software, have a "do not display posts from this board" setting on the user profile (I think that TMP does this).  If the "latest mini received" thread was shifted out of Open Talk (I'm not sure where to), you could then simply block all Open Talk posts from bugging you.

Similarly, if you don't want to buy anything, you could permanently block Bazaar posts.  As a refinement, perhaps the Bazaar could be split into two boards, one only for sales made entirely through this forum, another which allows redirection to ebay or other sites.  You could then block the type that annoys you.

If technically practicable, this would avoid making the mods act as content police.

WTF? You calling my cat a pet?  >:(

Seriously though, I have never started a thread about my cat which is my point. If other stuff gets mentioned during an ongoing discussion that's fine, it makes for a conversation. I fail to see why there's on 'off topic' board at all. If you want to talk about non gamey stuff go to another forum or email your friends about it.

Maybe I'm just anti social. I don't know.

There's too much crap on this forum now, films, books, tv, pets, family, holidays, music; most of it without the slightest connection to the main focus of the board.
I do agree with you, Paul. Can't really say that I'm the best contributer when it comes to pics or anything useful for other people to get inspired by. But I'm quite an uninspiring and useless bloke as it is anyway.
However, there's been occassions when I log on to LAF, just to find out that the majority of the new posts are either about something unrelated, new ebay listings and bazaar sellers who has made it as a personal crusade to fill page after page in the forum with their stuff.

Feedback on others' stuff is just as valid as posting pics of your own. No one should feel excluded because they don't 'do' stuff otherwise how will newcomers ever join in.

Of course. My point was to be a bit funny, but northern european sarcasm rarely translates well.
On a serious note, I've been searching the whole LAF for a swingers thread, but my search-fu has failed me so far.
Or was it all a lie, Mr Viking? :(

Now is the point in the conversation when I have to wonder at my own guilt in this matter. I often post links to my blog, almost always with a picture, because I want people to go to my blog to see other projects I've done and to hopefully get them interested in some of the other stuff that I'm doing, including the occasional miniatures and comics that I have for sale.

But by doing this I realize that I haven't actually added content directly to The LAF, I've only used it as a way to point people to my blog. When I think about the projects that drew me to The LAF, (Vikotnik's Symphony of Horror was what hooked me), I see how important it is to have content actually on the forum.

I cannot however, understand the level of anger that has risen from posting blog links. It seems like a very small issue in an otherwise enjoyable forum.

I think Red had a bad week... no visits to his blog and no bidders on his ebay auctions...

I think it is as simple as this :)

In one other respect blog links are also self-defeating..... I usually browse on a mobile device and blogs  generally render so badly that even if I wanted to bother there wouldn't be any point.

With 3468 members there are bound to be many different ways that individuals get value from the forum.

For example I can get quite bored when the painting league is on.  However I have absolutely no problem with my unread items list being filled with posts about it as I fully understand that for many members this is inspirational stuff with each round being eagerly anticipated.

Each to their own.

Surely if you want to contribute to the forum most of the stuff on your blog can be added here with little to no extra effort, ie cut and paste. You could still add extra pictures etc to the blog or further info without making life difficult for yourself.

There do seem to be more and more blog/ebay listings lately, I noticed this recently. I understand that it is a good way to get traffic to your blog but as stated you are more likely to reach a wider audience here on LAF and get more comments this way.

Just my say anyway.

Maybe the answer would be a BLOG LINK board, that way those that like to follow a blog can get a regular update of new listings and those that dont can bypass.
Maybe an option in your personal settings to block this....

As for ebay listings: I agree.
Maybe a seperate 'sticky' in the Bazar for ebay listings. That way you can choose whether or not you want to view them.
Easy for Mods to move as well, I believe.
No need for anything to be deleted then.

On a personal note, the Bazar has been great for me, as I have sold plenty of excess stuff and bought items that I was unaware even existed.

As for adding content, I believe that I do, but those that only add content to the Bazar should be sent to meet Mr Matakishi (and his cat) who will be waiting in a dark alley with a pair of garden shears!

Yeah this is an issue for me too. Blog links in the signature is all you need. Share the full content of the post on the forum, if people like it they will likely visit your blog. This has been the case for me with some people on here. Content has made me click their blog link, not a thread title.

I have to say all my projects are here in full. I dont do blogs, ultimately each on my threads is a blogette and I'm happy to continue to share, advise, inspire (hopefully) and be inspired, drool and moan, (abit) in this forum.

But like most people here I'm sick of parasitic ebayers who do not contribute in any way other than to line their pockets, and lets face it, you know who you are, cause you manage to piss people off on the other forums you've arrived at of late....

Although I hate to admit it, amongst the dreadful "extras" that TMP sprouted over the past few years there was one gem......the stifle button.

Designed to avoid viewing flaming or abusive posters it had a far more useful and valuable side function.

All the "US buyers only" sellers, persistent ebay link posters, overpriced/unrealistic sellers, tiresome "gentle bump"ers.......many of whom unfortunately post here as well could just be "stifled". Add them to your "stifle" list and never again, even by accident would you need to see one of their worthless posts......have to say there are 4 or 5 regular offenders on the bazaar that would be obvious candidates for the list.

Best of all it followed the culprit, irrespective of how many times they changed user ID and log ins.

So basically if you've got a blog don't post here then?

While we're at it can each member pick something they don't like and we'll stop that too?

Why don't we just take a break and consider all the "problems" mentioned here.

No one is saying - if you've got a blog, don't post here.

Peopel are saying - don't make a post with only a couple of lines redirecting to your blog. That's not posting, that's just redirecting traffic to a blog. Ok, the poster did an excelent job writing on his blog, he doesn't feel the need to make a post on the forum - he's in his rights. But what about doing a copy/paste of his material from the blog to the forum instead of just pasting a link? That would be my solution and there are lots of member who already do that!

As for the Ebay listings - we have to be honest, there's only a couple of guys who do that kind of thing. Maybe the moderators can talk with them? Or maybe they'll look at this thread and change their Ebaymongering-ways in shame?  ???

When was that ever suggested?  :?If you have a blog then post pics here and link to your blog, which you do Phil. It's empty threads that cause the issue and the problems. empty threads do not support the forum and as you know it's not that difficult to add pics to threads as

I am here to look at pictures & read content. Often I am looking from work. Ebay & blogs are often blocked. So if there is nothing there but a link, I have wasted my time.

when I came in here first about a year or so, I was astonished about the community here. There were so many links to sites I would never have dreamed of, that in about a few weeks I had some odd 100 bookmarks in my firefox ... new ones, I should add ^^

But though I like all the blogs I found by reading and rummaging, I also LOVE the threads and the atmosphere in HERE. Very kind, yet very professional! However, I also vote for more information when talking about linking blogs in here. I do NOT want to stop them linking their blogs, cause I mostly enjoy them all to well! But it would be nice to have cool teasers, too!

In the end ... one is having fun with the new thread (view it as an abstract to You blog ^^) and there will be even more fun, when reading the complete stuff!

So, nowaday (I guess we all are iNet pros this way ot that) it is so easy to throw in some links, pix and a bit of html-code-something, that it cannot be all that difficult to make some cool apetizers. If done, NO ONE will or would dare to argue versus some cool linked blogs, quite the oposite! After we are some sort of a network of nerds, but it's nice to know where You are linked to.

just my 2cts (maybe 4 ...) - best wishes
DK

I don't get the chance to visit daily, but even if I do there are often 4-5 pages of unread...This is quite daunting when time is short.  And it is not a measure of how popular LAF has become because, as others have already said, much of the posting is lacking in content.

I accept the decision about Blogs, it's the Prof's call, but personally, I doubt I click on more than one in ten so perhaps the Bloggers should realize that they are possibly not getting the result they expect.   ::)

I have my own website and there is a link in my signature.  I really only mention it specifically if I have done a big update, and that isn't very often.   :?  In fact, I often post photos here before it's on the Website.

As for the Bazaar, well, as someone who has both sold and bought through it I would say it has become too dominant and serious consideration should be given to just closing it down.  After all, there is nothing to say that a forum like this has to have a buy and sell area.

There's too much crap on this forum now, films, books, tv, pets, family, holidays, music; most of it without the slightest connection to the main focus of the board.

That's just wrong. We have about 20 only wargaming boards with only wargaming content and only one Open Talk where is allowed to post non-wargaming stuff. If I meet my wargaming friends outside of forum we're talking about everything, our families, music, movies etc. The same here. I never said this forum is only for wargaming discussions. That's the reason because we have Open Talk. You can like it or not but we had this board from the beginning of the forum and it will stay here.

And now I'm going to close this topic. I don't like the direction of this discussion. This thread is certainly not a LAF-one.  Here is nothing LAFish, this is becoming to a "witch-hunt". Hunt of ebayers, bloggers, now open-talkers. There are rules here and these rules do allow all this at the moment, so  live with it or stay away. Your choice.
