Hi guys,
The new Flash Gordon starts tonight and I've heard nothing good about it.
Is it really that awful? I saw a photo of the Hawkmen and was a little alarmed to see they didn't actually have wings is this true?
-
On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being good, this gets into negative numbers.
Other than the names, there is nothing at all like Flash Gordon here. Think of it as Stargate without the government and military being involved and the people going through the "gate" being about as dumb as possible.
His desire to do good seems forced and not at all accurate to his character.
-
It's crap. Forced myself to do my mandatory 3 episode viewing when getting into a new show and it was agony for three episodes.

"Brian Blessed, how would you best describe the new Flash Gordon series?"
"Flying blind on a rocket cycle."
-
That's quite disapointing.

I'm trying to watch it now... I'm 13 minutes in and already it ain't right.
Why remove the elements that make Flash cool in the first place.
Surely it's the 30s design, high sci-fantasy elements and sentiments of the age that make it an attractive property - I know that's why I love it. Take those away and you're left with... um... well not a lot really.
How can you spend this much money at it sooooo wrong. It's a crime.
Agggghhhh - 21 minutes in. Why are we still on Earth. Where's Mongo?
Oh and now Ming has hair. Oh the humanity...
-
Why remove the elements that make Flash cool in the first place.
Because those elements cost money. Instead of that, stick a recognizable name on a formula that worked for you once already (Stargate SG-1). You don't have to build expensive sets. You don't have to do much in the way of costuming. And you don't have to create CGI wings for the hawkmen.
Basically all the things that television does well.

Good point Rich!
I endured the whole pilot. The giant scientist on the skateboard was particularly special.
I feel dirty.

The giant scientist on the skateboard was particularly special.
I made the attempt and watched nearly the whole first season. I just couldn't bear it at the end. And I have to say, that character was the most interesting of all the ones in it.
-
I watched the whole first episode last night. What a disappointment.
No rockets! Ming lacked a menacing presence. And Merciless???? More of a gangster than an Evil Emperor!
Dr Who and Star Trek and Stargate and Buck Rogers and Primeval ... all have Transmats, Transporters, Anomalies and Gates so pretty much more of the same without any novel costumes, ideas, plots, and lack lustre characters.
Nope - not watching any more.
I'll bring out the film instead - War Rocket Ajax, Suadron Forty, and a Queen sound track!

Help me _ i Watched it! :D :D :D
My brain has bled out

I got all kinds of fired up when I heard this was going to be on the tube, I told AuntieRhino we would be busy on Friday nights, etc...
I made it through about 20 minutes before I was ranting and screaming at the television. She turned off the tube and asked me what the hell was wrong and why I was acting that way when it wasn't an NFL weekend. I could not even put together a coherent sentence, somehow my fevered brain came up with a plan and I think it worked.
Sometimes, you just can't beat the original, so we watched the first episode of the Crabbe serial and I asked her which one was better. Despite the corniness that it now has so many years later, she agreed and watched a few more episodes with me, up to the point with King Vultan's whitewashed bear, Urso, that just drove her over the edge.
I knew that Sci-Fi COULD do something to piss me off more than putting professional wrasslin on their channel, I wish I could have talked them into screwing up Buck Rogers instead. The only fitting fate for them is to
GET ME THE BORE WORMS
and leave the room

You know what.
I didn't watch it and reading this I'm so glad I didn't
Brain still intact and feeling clean
BTW Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles is quite good on Virgin 1 over here.
Couple of nice babes (sorry) in that

I've seen the pilot some time ago ... and on a scale of 1 to 10 it was somewhere around -50 or something. That was just awful television.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles on the other hand might be worth watching. I've seen that pilot also and it was quite promising. Especially with Summer Glau as a Terminator
-
Been following the Sarah Conner Chronicles pretty closely -- it's hard to believe its NOT a Scifi Channel show. Even the musical score sounds like its from BSG. The show gets better and better.
I somehow made myself watch the second episode of Flash Gordon, just in case I was too harsh after the pilot. While I didn't find it anymore offensive than say Stargate (I wasn't a fan of the original FG or the movie), I somehow found myself completely lacking in interest in watching any further. Regardless of content or staying true to the original, the show fails to grip the viewer in any way.
And that's a shame.
-
I too, did very much so dig the Sarah Connor series, it was not half bad. And no, having Ms. Glau onboard was a helluvan ( is that a word? screw it, in Kansas, I say it is) enticement. I first noticed her in Firefly, and sadly, I think about the time I was watching that, I was dating a young lady who was pretty much River Tam in one way or another. Yes, I think the government did mess with her brain, yes she was probably a super assassin who could read minds and yes, it did end badly!
But Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles was pretty darn good

Hey, now!
Early 20th-century Dick Calkins Biplane-flying Inertron jump belt-wearing rocket gun-firing Buck Rogers = Good
1970s TV Gil Gerard lame-ass Buck Rogers = Bad :x :x :x
Alex Raymond sumptuous visuals sword-slinging newspaper-strip Flash Gordon = Good

Sci-Fi Channel Dawson's Creek tedious Flash Gordon = Bad :x :x :x
Ridiculous 1980 movie Flash Gordon = Campy! :D :D :D

I too was a victim of the SciFi raping of Flash Gordon.
I just couldnt get into it. I went as far as the Hawkmen episode to give it a chance. Once the 'Hawkmen' grabbed their short, ratty capes and jumped of the building to 'fly' i changed the channel. My Wife said 'Thank You! I was afraid we were gonna keep watching." I haven't looked back.
Sad really....I had SUCH high hopes.
