I have one of these plasticville churches that I want to tart up for use as a backwoods cultist church.
http://www.tandem-associates.com/plasticville/country_church.htm
I'd like to replace the with something a bit more ambiguous or cultist-like, so looking for ideas?
Thanks

I've always liked the idea of a twisted spire...not sure how to execute it thou... :?

Whatever it is, I already find it quite ambiguous. :)
(But if you mean the cross, how about a rosy cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosy_Cross)? It has esoteric connotations without spelling out too loudly "Hey, we worship Cthulhu here!" Never a good idea for a secretive cult.)

What about an Ankh?
There is one sculpted on Uncle Mikes Cult leader.
I have taken that and will be using it as the 'public' icon for my Cult.
It also gives access to more figures to add to your Cult as the Ankh is a fairly common thing to find on various robed miniatures.

Just an upwards-down cross, like in the prison chapel in Duke Nukem 3D :D
Maybe hang a rotten body on there too :)
-
Cthulu statue on top...
Inverted cross as someone said...could have a skeleton on it...
Ankah is good...
Upside down Pentagram.
spikes around the edge of the spire
Tentacles wrapped around the spire...
random thoughts...

They managed it in Chesterfield in the UK, though more by accident than design.

Melted cross and twisted, blackened spire from a long ago lightning strike.
One great thing about plastic kits is how a little deformation with some heat can add character, just be careful.
-
use a hair dryer to warp it....or sculpt it from clay....
-
Dead sheep.
-
A spoked wheel would work.
Not too obvious, like if you had a great big statue of Cthulhu on top of the building!
-
A car bumper fish mounted on a sheepherds crook.
-
Put numbers on the dial on the steeple in the wrong order and/and or anti-clockwise.
Add '13' to the hours on the dial.
Let the hands of the clock move erratically.
Remove the tongue from the church bell and let it emit long sonorous silences according to the hours.
Weird, multi-eyed gargoyles along the parapets.

I like this one. The spoked wheel, maybe with some leaves or something on it for some pagan homage. I'd have been more blunt, an upside down cross or perhaps a gargoyle, but this solution has panache.

Thanks all, those are some great ideas.
I didnt want to go for something as cliche as an upside down cross. OTOH, since the steeple's cross isn't far off the horizontal mid-point, it may not be too noticable.

I had a thought last night....how about you clip off the headstone and glue this model to the roof so it's coming around the cross?

That'd look pretty bloody brill, IMO

I left mine empty, it can than be used for other noncthulhu boards as well.

In "The Haunter of The Dark" Lovecraft mentions this about the old church that had been taken over by The Starry Wisdom Sect: "Turning away from the windows, Blake noticed that the cobwebbed cross above the altar was not of the ordinary kind, but resembled the primordial ankh or crux ansata of shadowy Egypt.".
And put a pin in it so you can switch out different icons.

How about one of these modified?

Certainly gruesome, I like the different options.
I guess you could go either way. I find that a little less is more sinister. Innsmouth never jumped out at me as being all that diferent from a regular town on the outside. You look in the windows however, than you've got a different story!

Maybe you can find some inspiration in the Cathedrae Noctis (http://www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?view=product&product=13)...

I like that idea. The ankh would be subtle and ambiguous, but still give the impression of something darker.

In the movie "Dagon" was there a Church of Dagon with an odd-looking symbol, I can't recall excatly what it looked like.

I think it was this:
