Title: Cheap alternatives for Nazgûl?
Post by: CyberAlien312 on 23 September 2012, 12:16:28 PM
Hi,
I really like Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings range, but it is very expensive. I thought about buying the dismounted Nazgûl figures, but 50GBP for only 9 figures is a bit too much for me. Besides, I don't even need all of them. I'm mainly interested in recreating the fight on Weathertop, so I would need four Nazgûl, as I already have the Witch-King. Surely there are 28mm companies that produce cheap not-Nazgûl or at least cloaked figures in their fantasy range? If so, does anyone know cheap alternatives to the GW Nazgûl?
Cheers!

Have you considered a hit-and-run on the ebay?  In my experience most LotR stuff can be picked up there for very reasonable prices:

Other than that I'm afraid I can't think of any suitable alternatives.  Good luck!

You might be able to do a conversion on some partially cloaked figures, extending the cloak to cover most of their face, etc.

Nazgul that are not cartoony and with size and proportions like GW's are hard to find. You could try old brands. Wraiths and Wights by the Julie Guthrie for Grenadier or some Ral Partha figures might work. Rafm and Reaper to some undead too.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys...  :)

I like the Mithril Miniatures ones, but they are 32mm instead of 25mm/28mm. Does a 32mm miniature look out of place next to 28mm ones? I don't care if Nazgûl look a little taller than ordinary people; after all, they're spirits... but I don't want them to look ridiculously big. Can anyone tell me if 32mm and 28mm are compatible?

The LotR figures tend to be on the smaller side of the 28mm scale.  I'd imagine a 32mm figure would tower above them.  Might be a bit too big.

You wouldn't happen to have any of the plastic Army of the Dead figures would you?  I could see those miniatures being easily converted into Nazgul.

You can buy some Black Numenorean Warriors. They are cheaper than Nazguls. You can have the four you need at the cost of 16p, but you have to convert them a little. If you remove their shields, the thorns and horns from swords and armours and make some hoods from greenstuff you will have your cheap Nazguls.

Sorry, I mean 16p = 16 pounds. This is the official GW price:

D&D prepaints. There's a ton of wraiths in every line they put out, and ebay is rife with the things.
