Title: Source for the Dutch War of Independence
Post by: moif on 25 September 2012, 01:19:45 AM
Can any one point me in the direction of any sources for the Eighty Years War/Dutch War of Independence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighty_Years%27_War)? I'm interested in all aspects of this conflict, but primarily information regarding the Spanish and Dutch forces, unit colours, heraldry etc

First of all, if you can get a copy of Ian Heaths book it is excellent, However appears to be very expensive. It covers armies, troop types, organisation and most of the battles. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scotland-Provinces-Netherlands-1487-1609-Sixteenth/dp/1901543005/ref=sr_1_23?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348595111&sr=1-23
Next on the list would be Charles Oman's 'Art of war in the sixteenth century'. Although he's a bit outdated now he still has fairly detailed descriptions of the major battles. http://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Art-War-Sixteenth-Century/dp/0947898697/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348595324&sr=1-1
Anything by Geoffrey Parker, but especially http://www.amazon.co.uk/Army-Flanders-Spanish-Road-1567-1659/dp/0521543924/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348595488&sr=1-5
and
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dutch-Revolt-Pelican-Geoffrey-Parker/dp/0140222820/ref=sr_1_9?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348595488&sr=1-9
That should be a reasonably good start and should empty out your bank account!

Thanks for the feed back.
I found 'The Armies of England, Scotland, Ireland, the United Provinces and the Spanish Netherlands 1487-1609' on Abe Books for £22.60, inc P&P. (They had other copies equally cheap)
I'll have a look for the others tomorrow!

At that price, a very good purchase  :)

The Pike & Shot Society periodical, Arquebusier, has had loads of of articles on this area in last couple of years. It's also worth checking out there other publications

Of course it could be the wrong book...

I think it is worth to note that this forum has a healthy helping of Dutch members, myself included. So should you ever find some info in Dutch (more then likely with this topic) it shouldn't be hard to get a quick translation.

Yeah, be careful with the Ian Heath book, there are two on the 16thC and the aztec and americas one is a lot easier to come by!

Much to my friend's hilarity, I've bought the wrong book. Ah well. Better to be philosophic about it.
