I thought I would have an attempt at posting my Dads Army project , partly as a learning experience for me and see if I can get any advice.
I have painted the figures in a wash and dry brush method. I got really tired of doing three color painting on my Germans which took me so long that some of my models were not finished in time for last years Demo game.
I hope my photography improves as I go along.
1st up the Characters .

Not sure if this should be in the Weird World War 2 gallery :P
The figures look better in the flesh as the flash destroys most of the highlights. BigglesWade does not look as shiny and the Uniform looks much better. :(
I was not sure about the Dispatch Riders arm band and other details so please point out any mistakes.

Next up 1st section (until I re-organise the whole platoon)

At the moment I'm working on the second section and Mr Brown . It usually takes me about ten days to paint ten figures in a batch and I usually do some other prep or painting for other projects at the same time.
I'm also working on an Armed fishing boat for a German Landing/rescue party . Which started as transport for baby Kong for my Pulp games but got neglected when my mad mate left the country (you need a Mad mate for Pulp projects to bounce ideas off)
-
Lovely stuff, you can't beat a bit of Dads Army :)
-
Very nice. :) I keep thinking about spending my as yet unborn children's inheritance on these figs (that's how much they seem to cost, anyway) just for a bit of fun. And you're not helping, matey.
I think the wash and drybrush looks fine on them, especially if they're going to be fielded en masse.
Just a thought, but if you're having probems with reflections when you take the pictures, try using more light from a static source like a couple of anglepoise lamps, and turning the flash on your camera off. Should help a bit.
-
Don't panic!!!
Stupid boy
Don't tell him your name Pike!
Brilliant stuff now for the 1940s sea side buildings :)
-
Great looking group there, Dan. I just might have to move back to Welly!
Sorry to hear about Steve Castle.
Cheers
Will
-
Hi Will , and all , yes shame about Steve . I dont think he will make TMP but a great loss to our gaming community. :(
Thanks for the kind comments .
I tried using a couple of lamps but they just made things worse , so think I will have to get some lower powered bulbs . I also tried to reflect the light off some paper but that did'nt work either.
I have in mind a mad idea about doing a sea front with bathing huts , the destroyed pier and the Novelty Rock Emporium . But as nearly everything was done on a set I will have to use my imagination quite a bit or , base it off some suitable photographs.

Try Googling photos of the Norfolk/Suffolk coast. Great Yarmouth has a pier and Southwold has a good seafront. Most of the exterior locations done in and around Thetford forest area and some Norfolk villages.
I have a Dads Army book at home I will see if it gives any references for the locations.

Good morning everyone I personally find all this stuff fascinating. I vivdly remeber watching Dads army when it first came out and my dad telling me that they went on exercises with the Home Guard ,he also said during street fighting training the regulars were firing at the home guard from first story buildings .Then getting complaints via the umpire for fighting "unfairly".Operation Sea lion is a fascinating what if period to game .Can I reccomend Keneth Macksey book "Operation Sea Lion " and "Battle fields that never were" ,defended England 1940 by William Foot .Also "Last Ditch" by david Lampe this covers the formation of the so called stay behind units, all useful for background information and scenario ideas.David. :) :)

There is a rather amusing episode of 'Foyle's War' similar to this.

There was a series of mgazines released with DVDs a couple of years ago, they sometimes crop up in second hand shops. I think we have one that features a town map, I'll see if I can find it.
-
Hi guys , thanks for all the kind offers of help. 8)
I have Googled a few piers to get some general ideas and have got three of the BBC DVDs so am studying them for ideas .
I think this subject will keep me occupied for awhile.
-
Lovely painting. 8)
-
Things have been going slowly but I have done a few things which I will be able to upload photos of soon . I have bought the Osprey book on British Home Defences 1940 - 45 which was a very interesting read.

This is my Armed Fishing Boat and want to ask for opinions on how to
paint it . I'm thinking of doing the hull red , black band and then a light grey upper decks with wood paneling . Or maybe black hull with red band and light grey upper hull.
I want to use it for Pulp games and will be able to remove the gun deck and weapons so I dont want it to look too Military.
(sorry about my earlier brainfart , I've been on other forums too much lately  )
-
try this
http://www.dadsarmy.co.uk/map.html
might help with your layout.
Did you know that the Home Guard training was devised by a Spanish Civil War veteran. Tom Winteringham fought in Spain, and helped to put together a training manual, he was thrown out because the Government feared he was putting together a Left Wing militia to try and grab power!!!
-
Hi Durutti thanks for the Map I will have to study it for some details.
The Osprey book mentions Tom Winteringham . Seemed a shabby way to treat a Veteran but they lived in strange times I suppose.
-
My trawler crew who I am in the process of rebasing as they were painted for Pulp games as my Walker Crew but never used.

This is a house I built some time ago which I am using as a template for other houses and shops as I think it looks British enough . I may change the yellow to a softer shade .
I am just about finished basing my 2nd HG section and have started assembling the support weapons.

The Battle for Godfrey's Cottage is about to be refought, methinks..... 8)

I'm not sure I can offer any suggestions about colours, though the latter option might be more suitable as it will be a bit more subdued.
Regardless, thats a cracking model
I may have to copy that
-
Thanks Overlord , the Trawler has nearly taken over my whole Project as I just did'nt know when to stop adding details , but I had to in the end as I wanted to keep it as a wargaming model.
The Hull was made out of blue Foam wrapped in two layers of card to make it strong . The LMG was an MG 42 filed down to look like a 34 and mounted on some bits . The gun was scratch built from a Minitank gun with an Airfix 88 gun sheild mounted upside down and bits from the bits box. I'm thinking of putting a seated gunner on it but not sure how historical it would be.
-
Nice stuff dan.
Quirky but very good.
-
I agree with Overlord, a superb boat, excellent level of detail :)
-
Darned tramp steamers - nothing but a load of pirates, taking over every project they get involved in!
Great looking model, Dan.
-
Just an update .
The Boat is almost finished as I ran out of Varnish halfway through spraying it. :x

I painted a drop cloth for the beach and sea , I'm pleased with the sea but the beach needs more work.
The yellow does not show through as much in real life as I was using a spotlight which changes it a bit.
Speaking of spotlights I found these in my local shop . The are real working lights and are about 35mm high .

Squad 2 is finished , not sure what I will do with Mr Brown (BAM Partizan) he could be a sniper or just another member of the LDV as I painted an armband on his right arm.

Thanks , we are still throwing ideas around but will have some German Pilots , Nuns and some Paras to fight against .
The Van came from Lledo which I found on Ebay.
-
Curse you Dan, you're ahead of me! I've been working on a similar idea for some time now.
-
Dan
I love what you've done with that boat and the beach.
Just fantastic 8)
Your figures are very good.

Gentlemen, please, enough of my cock references
Great looking stuff, I love the way you have done the sea and the beach. :)
Its a great game inthe making and the finished trawler looks splendid. :)
I was just watching one of the many repeats of Dads Army on saturday night. I still love that programme and never get tired of seeing each episode. :)
Please post an after battle report once you start playing :D
-
Thanks for the replies .
We hope to have a game in a couple of weeks to try and work out a few things but are aiming for a Demo later on in the year so will post a full report of that.
-
We had a playtest of some rules which were a variation on GW's Mordheim set . They seemed to work well . I did'nt take any photos but some Club members said they really liked what we had thrown together for the game.
Progress since last post. (photos are not very good this time around :-[ )
Support weapons ; both Army and Home Guard.
Odds and ends. ( some head swapping and Green stuffery)

More;
Chieftain vehicles which I might do some more work on as they look a little plain at this stage. They make the Jones Van look really small now. :(
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3113/2481657033_14212c3c3d_o.jpg)
Some row boats which will have to be Guarded.

I think I will try with less light next time as my spotlight has really washed out the shops which look much better in reality.
-
All lovely, Dan. Say, the rowboats, where did you get them?
-
Really excellent Dan.
Years ago Terry Wise did a series on Operation Sealion for Airfix magazine. I'm sure someone out there will have them. One part dealt with seafront defences, Guns hidden in fake Ice-cream kiosks and the like.
Can I recommend;
'The Last Ditch: Britain's Secret Resistance and the Nazi Invasion Plan' Lampe, D., Greenhill Books, 2007.
'The Battlefields That Nearly Were' Foot, W., Tempus, 2006.
For fortifications, the second book is pretty comphrehensive and well illustrated. The first deals with the 'auxiliaries'.
Dad's Army was, and still is, my favourite comedy of all time.
Don't forget the floral gun cover that Godfrey's sister Dolly made for the Smith Gun!

Oh.. and try;

Great stuff Dan. :D

Hi Dan,
Great looking collection and you have created some lovely buildings in addition.
Thanks for sharing. 8)
-
Lovely stuff!
I've been thinking about watching some Dad's Army again- like others here it's a series that I grew up with.
Watched this film today- 'Went the Day Well?'
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035429/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035429/)
while we're on a home guard theme. From 1942, a really good film and quite fascinating as a historical piece, too.
-
Hi , thanks for the comments .
The rowboats I bought off Tony Ashcroft but dont know if he made the masters or not.
I will try and look at all the links etc , thanks.
PS the Pier is underway . ;)
-
I am slowly building up my Foundry Home Guard (finances are the issue with 4 munchkins!) and various Fallschirmjager - my eventual idea is an idealised Operation Sealion interupted by the Daleks (thankyou Marks and Spencers) ;D
-
Progress has been very slow as I have been doing lots of overtime lately but have managed to do this little lot.
Had some nice winter sun at lunchtime so managed to get some better photos.
Bikes , two packets of Foundry HG bikes.

Great idea & lovely !
I really like the "peloton" too (hint : Tour de France !)
meow,
Matt
-
Love those Boy Scouts :)
-
My Father served in the local Home Guard before he joined the Royal Navy in 1943. Some of the stories he told me were somewhat horrifying - boxes of broken glass hidden by the side of the road to throw under tank tracks, even a pitchfork tied to the front of his bike so he could ride into squads of paratroops !!!
I love British puck as much as the next guy, but I think that's taking optimism just a bit too far....thank god it (the invasion) never happened.
-
Love your stuff Dan.Great!
-
MARVELOUS!!Heavilyarmed boy scouts? :o :othat'll make for some interesting scenarios!! lol
-
Those Scouts are great. :)
We never had a Bren when I was in the scouts.
Rifles, Yes.
Machine Guns, No.
-
Hi all , thanks .
I bought the Gurkhas off Will Baillie but had no idea of what to do with them until I started the Dads Army project. I converted a Tommy Gun to a Bren , modified the hats and greenstuffed the scarfes . The figures are noticably smaller so fit well with the rest of the Army.
Not sure how I will use them other than normal troops but may have to come up with some special rules with names like ; Bob a job , Gingangoolie etc.
I have started the German Paras but am finding the molds really badly worn and they need lots of cleaning up. :-[
-
So your miniatures are working on their 'Repel the Hun' merit badge! lol
Wonderful stuff Dan! :)
-
Its been awhile since I posted anything here . I have done two sections of Foundry German Paras which have come out quite dark so will work on my lighting before posting any photos . I have also painted three Vickers tanks which I will post later .
I had to give some Regiment games British Landing Party figures to a friend to paint as I'm running out of time . I wont be able to do my Commandos either. :(
The Demo is less than a month away so its panic time. :o
I threw together some things which I had at home as a preview .

That looks fantastic, Dan. I visions of a reverse Dieppe-style raid going through my head now, as the Germans storm the English shore line to purchase lollies and ice cream and line up for donkey rides! Sorry I won't be there to see the game. And love what you've done with the Gurkhas - haven't seen a Boy Scout Troop with a Bren gun before. Hope they all get their marksmanship merit badges!
Cheers

Hi Will , I have ideas of Deckchairs or sunloungers as objectives :) I'm just trying to make some molds of a Deckchair I scratchbuilt.
-
Hi Dan,
This is lovely! Thankyou and good luck with your demo next month.

Great stuff and its the 40th anniversary of Dads army TV series this week
-
Hi all , sorry not had much time to visit here as I'm in a Panic over painting . I only have ten days left to paint if I dont watch Rugby or go drinking ::)
I think I will choose a smaller project next year. :D
-
I only have ten days left to paint if I dont watch Rugby or go drinking ::)
Who would ever have associated those two pastimes with a Kiwi? lol
We've just had a Dads Army weekend on the BBC, always good to watch.
Good look with the painting and the game, its looking brilliant so far. 8)
"Don't tell them your name Pike"
-
I'm not actually accepted as a Kiwi yet as I've only lived here thirty years :o
I'm still looked upon as a Bloody Pom. ;)
Still Rugby and drinking are universal pastimes . :P
-
Wow, this all looks fantastic. It makes me want to get on with my home guard project. i love the scouts.
Keith
-
lovely seeing a project develop through to conclusion great work.... well done....
-
Stay tuned , the Demo game is this weekend so I should have some photos of the whole table , plus the things that I have neglected to photo as I ran out of time in the rush to complete it.

Just a couple of photos to finish this thread off . First up some characters .
The German spy was a conversion of Mrs Fox . I swapped her legs with a BlackTree US gun crew that I had removed to fit into a Tamiya M10.
The Char B from Tony Ashcroft to which I added some tools as seen in some photos. It never fired a shot in the game :-[

Some more bits I have added .
BlackTree Zombies .

Baron and his Assistant .

Vickers Medium .
Really need to learn how to use my new camera and take a hammer to the old one >:(
-
Who makes the Vickers Medium Tank? :-*
-
Copplestone sells one, I know that for sure. I suppose it might not be that one, but that would be my guess.
-
Hi and thanks .
I bought the tank from Copplestone . I believe it was the old HLBS model.
BTW the BlackTree Zombies were just horrible figures I could'nt work out what to use as , so just converted them to Zombies.
-
Great project. I hadn't seen this thread before. Dad's Army is one of my all time favourite TV series. This is a real inspiration, but I MUST NOT start another project ....
