Title: Hasslefree Sculpting Competition 2012 Entry
Post by: Daeothar on 01 October 2012, 09:50:59 AM
Well, my Interbellum efforts have been on hold for a little bit, as I've briefly turned my energy to something different.

Hasslefree has been hosting a sculpting competition, in which one has to use a specific miniature of theirs as a base. Categories are Fantasy, SciFi and Modern and the original miniature has to still be recognisable. Also, it has to be suitable for casting, as the winners will get theirs cast up in resin, whilst every participant will get their mini cast in metal as well. 8)

That was too good an opportunity to let pass, so I signed up. I got the base miniature sent to me sometime in August, but real life of course took precedence (as it usually does fulltime during the summer), and it was not until about a week ago, that I could finally get started. That did mean I had quite some time to think about what I wanted to do, so I could get stuck in almost immediately.

I decided to go for an entry that would fit in with their Modern / Adventurers line (one of the challenges was to make something that would fit into their existing ranges as well).

Now, ever since I saw it on TV, I've been a huge fan of the Robotech series, and then especially the Robotech Masters (even though amongst Robotech afficiados, it is considered the least of the three series). And I'm a tad embarassed to say, but back then, I had a bit of a crush on the lead character, Dana Sterling. Just the perky, heroic and pretty girl a 13 year old boy dreams of... ::) But I digress. anyway; she was the inspiration for my entry.

In one episode, she dresses up as a nurse to sneak into a militairy hospital, and of her in this episode, someone made a tribute poster (no; not me...). Here's a linkerdiclick to a small version, so you know what the heck I'm on about:

Also, my wife actually is a nurse, so it was only natural that I'd combine the two and make this mini a tribute to nurses in general; I know from close association that it is not the easiest job in the world, but certainly a necessary one.

And with that, I went to work. I had in mind that the deadline was before October 1st, so in good Daeotharian fashion, I slacked off at just the right time, so I would be cutting it close to the deadline. And indeed, I finished yesterday evening, with some of the putty still drying as I took my pictures. Only to discover, when checking for the email address to send my pictures to, that the deadline was on October 1st. So I had actually finished a day early! *gasp*

Well, that felt good; I should do that every time... ;)

Anyhow, the pictures have been sent, and now it's a two week wait until the results are published and the voting can commence. At any rate I'm really satisfied with the way this sculpt came out. It's not perfect by far; I had to make the hands look like they're in thick rubber gloves after I resculpted them, as they kept turning out too big, and the expression I changed on the face could have been better (she is smiling, but with the frown, she looks slightly psychotic now...), but this is the first time I (re)did a face, so I should not complain too much.

first, here is a link to the original miniature all entries need to be based on (on the Forum of Doom):

And here, finally, is my own entry:

Fingers crossed! I hope I will get to paint a metal version of her eventually. If only to see how the sculpt has turned out, as I find it rather difficult to discern the end result with the putty and bare metal alone. A thin basecoat would help already, but as a cast needs to be made of the originals, no paint can be used of course...

NIce work. I like the hair.  I'm keen on seeing all entries. My harryhausen gorgon and head crab victim have been entered.
