Title: I'm planning a pulp game (Putting the terrain together p.4 )
Post by: Melnibonean on 03 October 2012, 08:21:15 AM
Greetings folks, I'm planning a pulp game involving a range of pulp characters and clichés.

The concept is set in 1930 and based on King Kong... A film crew led by the fallen movie director CC B DeVille have gone to a "mysterious island" so DeVille can make his movie on the cheap. DeVille has purchased a map to the "mysterious island" and knows that it has a bad reputation and is reputed to be haunted. No worries, all the better for his comeback movie (his first talkie!)

The game involves the film crew and actors, tramp steamer crew (who have other plans), a tribe of Mud Men, Rocketeers, the Mob, various jungle nasties and (of course) a giant gorilla.

The pic below shows the start of the scenery. This was made for Nunawading Wargames Association's (NWA) recent Pirates in September annual get together. It's 6' x 4' and will be extended so that the full table will be 12' x 4'. Quite long and narrow but the idea is a long escape through the jungle to the waiting ship when things go pear shaped... and it will by about turn 2.

Here's a pic of it being used as a pirate cove.

One thing I forgot to mention is the rules system to be used. Well there is none so to speak. The rules are based on a goal system type thing and a bunch of other rules and concepts that I like and will fit. All very simple and easy to grasp within one or two turns.

Here are some of the character reference cards:

That looks good. I've had something similar on the "back burner" for ages - with Zeppelin delivered baddies and volcano gods to be appeased.

Good luck with it.

Great terrain - looking forward to seeing it in action.
Been planning something myself along these lines for end of the month, but afraid your set-up will put mine to shame!
Nice cards too.

I stole the pics from the Pulp Figures web site (http://pulpfigures.com) because the little chaps are still on my painting bench.

I did them on photoshop. Each one has about 50+ layers which make up the basic template. The only thing different in each one is the picture. Of course all the text is unique but I just alter it on the basic template and make some layers invisible where needed. Having said that, all the text is done on Word so that I can spell check etc. Photoshop is pretty crappy for typing and it's easy to make typo's. I then copy and past it.

It's quite complicated but once the basic template is done all the rest is just chopping and changing.

Greetings folks. Work on my Kong game is continuing at a cracking pace.
I've started that last sections of the board and I've been up to my elbows in extruded polystyrene all weekend. I'll post some results soon.

However, today I just wanted to post up some more character sheets for the crew of the Madagascar Queen (shore party).
There are 7 of them all up: Cap'n, mate and 5 seamen. They will also have a harpoon gun (pulled out of the hold) complete with home made chloroform bombs and they also get to lay several traps including a large one for the great Beast himself (but will it hold him???).

I've been working on the terrain for my Kong game. It is an extension of some pre-existing terrain. The entire board is 10' x 4'. Here are a couple of pics of the work in process.

Thanks for all the kind replies. I'm having a good time putting all of this together.

I've had trouble finding a decent Kong so I'm sculpting my own. Starting yesterday, he is currently a large armature. I've bulked it out and will start to fill it out and add details today. And I am taking progress pics.

I finally found my Kong.
After a long search through the dark and dismal gizzards of the internet (and every toyshop I could find) I finally found my guy on Amazon for $7.95. He arrived to day and he is perfect... Well he did need to spend an hour or so in the make up department. He stands about 6.5" and fits in perfectly with 28mm.

He still needs some scars added to his chest and a bit more bulking out around his jowls. But here are a couple of pics I took while his new face is still curing.

Cheers,
IanKH

Sort of. I've put together a rule set using some 7TV and some Goal System. I intend to use the scenario for several expo's next year and I've made them very simple and easy to pick up. So I picked out various the 'fool proof' rules and put them all together.

I was very keen to get the big fella done. I filled out his face a bit and bulked out his chest (just a little) and added some old battle scars. He was very easily painted. Very dark grey (almost black) and two dry brushed shades. However I did leave the eyes of the original figure because they looked great. I just added a bit of red and a little glinting spot. His teeth look a little odd in the close pics. They are actually bone coloured.

Anyway, here he is:

And again i have to fight the urge to run of and start collecting stuff for a new project. What is that? It happens evry time i visit this website. Hmm, maybe some other medicine?
Anyway, this Kong project look magnifique! As a small boy growing up in Amsterdam, for a long time a comic of the King Kong story was my faithfull companion going every where i went. Reading it maybe a hundred times or more. Funnily enough i still have not seen the newest film of that great story, by Peter Jackson. I might pick it up for next to nothing some of these pre-Christmass shopping days as it is some years old.
So i am looking forward to the progress of this project. Keep up the good work!

Legion1963-- You have my advice and permission to give the Peter Jackson "King Kong" a miss. There are a few good lines, but there's no "weight" to the CGI sequences. In the same way that they show a steel-hulled tramp freighter banging broadside into rocks and rolling away like a fiberglas canoe in a stream, they show a 7 meter gorilla who presumably weighs upwards of 10 tons flipping around like an acrobat. And the scene of Kong gliding across the frozen pond in Central Park floored me. "How thick is that ice? No, not that thick, really!"

So you mean that King Kong, a film about a 10 ton gorilla, isn't a realistic film? My god! :o

Silversixx -

I'll accept a 10-ton gorilla - that's fantastic and I like Pulp for elements of the fantastic and the heroic within a real world setting of the 1920s-30s. 10-ton gorillas performing aerial kung-fu gymnastics with Tyrannosaurus Rexes edges leaps into the absurd, which they reinforced by ignoring real-world stuff like the ice and the ship. It seems sometimes that filmmakers throw in elements like the ship sequence because they don't believe that the audience will accept that the ship's in danger if it isn't shooting around like a chip on a millrace. It's like showing a giant cruise ship turning multiple barrel-rolls. (Oh, wait, that movie's been done. Twice....) :)

Sorry about the thread-littering. I really love your AARs, and I think I speak for everyone when I say that I envy your toys and the fun you guys are having!
