Title: Space Pirates!
Post by: Ironworker on March 13, 2008, 02:50:39 AM
I had to take a very short break from pulp projects to avoid burnout so I decided to work on a few of my space pirates for a couple days.

Sleep is for the weak!  I'll sleep when I'm dead and as anyone with a lead mountain knows I'll die the day I get them all painted.

So I had the day off today and thought I might be able to grind through and finish these guys but it turned out to be one of those cursed days off. I updated my blog with what I did manage to get finished.

Nice figures. Are they the (former?) i-Kore / Urban Mammoth range?

Yes they are but I think they are still in production under the Urban War banner.

I'ts always amazing how a common colour works as uniform. The red really makes them look less like street punks. Great painting *thumpsup*

Hoorah! Sigue Sigue Sputnik have reformed! Or is it Adam and the Ants? They look hideous!

I mean that purely from a fashion standpoint, the figures themselves are great. I really like them. But if I met them in real life I would laugh in their silly glam rock faces.  :)

The unified colour scheme really makes them stand out. My first thought if I was painting pirates would be to make them all look different, all rag-tag and individualistic. But the team colours thing really works. Nice one.

Lol at the glam rock.  That's kinda what I was going for.

I considered making them more rag tag but then I thought gang colors instead.  Also these guys in particular represent the newer recruits of the crew.  The more hardened veterans will look a bit meaner.

These are part of a No Limits army I'm writing the rules for so I'm using figures from a lot of different lines.  I'm working on various units based on the kind of groups the might exist in a pirate crew.

The Duct Rats are low level new recruits so I'm using these old Void militia.

The Space Dogs are regular crew so I'll probably use figres from the different Necromunda gangs since they look a little meaner.

The Death Monkeys are like berserkers so I'm probably going to use mostly figs from Dark Age with two hand to hand weapons.  That game has lots of those and they look pretty crazy.

I've also got a power armored unit in mind that are suppose to be the first ones through a breach but I've not got a name for them.  They will be a unique unit since I don't think pirates should have a whole lot of power armor.

I figured the army would be based around light vehicles both skimmers and wheeled vehicals so it will be a cross between Mad Max and Jaba's gang.

Thanks. I have always just skipped looking at their stuff. There are some figures in the militia that I wouldn't mind getting.

Very nice work. They look great.

They have quite a Copplestone-ish look to them, which makes me think they would fit in well with my Future Wars collection...

Anyone know who the sculptor is, out of interest?

I don't really know who the sculptor is.  Something in the back of my head says that when they were Void figs from Ikore that Kevin White was listed as the sculptor but the Urban Mammoth site doesn't credit the sculptor.

Those look really great. I can't wait to see the other units you mentioned, skimmers and all that.

Those are some very nice pirates indeed! :)

As to the sculptor, if memory serves me right then these were sculpted by Steve Saleh, prior to Kev leaving i-Kore (or rather, the cardhouse tumbled down on them) but not by Kev's hand.

IMO, he actually made some fine figures - problem was that they had to fit together with Kev's unique style. And in my eyes, they just didn't work together. But disconnected from the other figures in the range, then they sure do look the business!
