Popped open my Dreadfleet box yesterday and started tinkering with the contents. You can check the unboxing over at my blog, more Dreadfleet posts will follow shortly :-)

I am rather keen to get this game (which sort of surprises even myself). Please let us know how it plays.
-
Almost too much great stuff in there to open it! :-*
-
It is ram packed and it's a fun enough game for me to have advanced ordered mine back when it came out.
I haven't played it since, but for Lead Adventurers it seems perfect. You have to have a knack for just getting a game out for the sake of it.
-
I played about ten games of it when I first got hold of it and had fun with it. Beautiful models and components, but the game is rather poorly devised. The basic rules are quite simple and fun, but the battle damage system is clunky and the fate cards are hugely unwieldy. Games are long and they end up feeling very random.
There is a series of quite insightful (but quite critical) blog posts about the rules and gameplay on Jake Thorton's blog (http://quirkworthy.com/dreadfleet/), which include his attempts to salvage it by tweaking the rules. Worth a read if you like that sort of thing.
-
Great game but good luck : I spent ages painting all the boats.

Wow, that whole website reads like a swollen ego and a half! Interesting though, would like to read what he has to say when I have a bit more time.
-
Yea the game is pretty good, much better then I thought it would be but it's not a perfect game and would need some more work on it.
The models are nice with a fair amount of details. I painted up a set for a friend and they were quite easy to paint.
-
Just checked that site briefly. Can't say there was a lot of helpful stuff in the review as he didn’t (or just poorly) explained why it was supposed to be bad. He is entitled to his opinion and let’s not get carried away in a dick waving contest about what games is better than another, because I’m simply not interested in that. But for the record I'm very underwhelmed and unimpressed with the Mantic rulesets that he himself seem to be affiliated with. Maybe it is my casual approach combined with the heavy discounted price but I've liked it in the few Dreadfleet games played with my friend Daniel.
In any case, the Bloody Reaver was assembled and painted up , pictures will be up in the next two days. I knew the Bloody Reaver and Heldenhammer would be a pain in the ass to paint and build so I started with them on purpose. The rest of the box contains simpler and probably a lot easier (less frustrating) ships to paint.

You are right, both are a pain to paint and assemble. For the others it's easier but dont forget to paint the sails before gluing them : it will be far easier.

Yes, the Reaver in particular takes ages to paint. I did a ship, then a sea monster, then a ship, then something else, just to keep it interesting and maintain a sense of achievement. Good luck with it!
-
My very first private Dreadfleet adventure was putting the "Bloody Reaver" together, which was somewhat trickier than I anticipated. You are more or less forced to assemble sections and leave them apart for painting if you want to be able to paint the ship well enough.
Pictures of this ship painted up will be posted tomorrow.

The Bloody Reaver, command ship of the "baddies" in Dreadfleet all painted up. Two long painting sessions and a lot of willpower went into finishing this one. More pictures on my blog:

This is extremely well painted! Wow. Unfortuantely I don't really dig the models. Why does GW always have to go over the top with stupid ideas? A complete cliffside as a ship? Or the empire's flagship being a large as... I don't know, Manhatten? I mean really! Aren't there little ship models in the box supposedly being more or less ordinary ships? It would be so much cooler to have a down to earth kind of scale for the special models as well. But all these weird extra ships that evoke absolutely no feeling of belonging together (at least for me) are a big turn off.
That said, still awesome paintjob!
-
While I'm painting the Heldenhammer (trying hard to avoid a mental breakdown once again) I figured I could show how it looks before assembly and right before the basecoat. Already Spent 2 painting sessions on this ship, and hope to have it finished later today with pictures up tomorrow if all goes well. More pictures on the blog:

Nice paintjob on the evil ship! I still have a box in my drawer, gathering dust... I suppose I should get it out and paint it... sometime. ;)
-
Nice bit of painting there. Very inspiring.
-
Superb ship!
-
IMHO painting ships is really boring (i'm sorry naval gamers), ManO'War vessels are boring to paint, but the Dreadfleet ones are even worse.
The models are really cool, I really like them, I painted the helldenhammer and took me ages (i'm a really slow painter) until the point to be downhearted to paint the rest, someday i should finish that box.
The idea to alternate each ship with something else sounds like a good advice.
-
I've almost finished my set. The ships are all done except for the reaver. I have a handful of small terrain items to paint as well. You are moving much more quickly than me.

those portholes... The horror... the horror..
Nice job Anatoli!
-
Yeah those portholes convinced me not to pick up Napoleonic ships for "Trafalgar" which I had been considering for a long time.
Next ship painted up, the Dwarf ship "Grimnir's Thunder", more pictures on my blog:

Your work looks fantastic, but the details of your pain and suffering have made me glad that I decided not to buy this game. I'd be so annoyed after trying to paint these things that I'd never want to play!
-
In my opinion the best sculpt and most interesting miniature in the Dreadfleet box is the pretty normal looking ghostship - the "Shadewraith".
It was quite easy to paint, basecoated it Khemri brown, then drybrushed it with a lighter tone to get some contrast. Then washed it heavily with a mix of Green Ink, Dark Tone, Devlan Mud and Soft Tone colors then highlighted it with white.

At first I didn't like the colors, but then I noticed those greens (I think they're less visible in this first photo) and I must say I love it!
-
Lovely paint job!
:)

The Skabrus painted up, this is the "undead Skaven" warship made out of a seamonster which ate a Skaven fleet.

Seadrake is the High Elf warship, accompanied by two dragons which can be used as this ship's auxiliary units. This is the fastest ship of all, and it can almost turn on a penny with its superb handling characteristics. Being equipped with bolt throwers only, the ship can only ever target and kill enemy crew, no other damage can be inflicted.

The Skabrus looks especially mean! Love the Grimnir's Thunder too, don't suppose you could get a ruler out and post her dimensions? Thinking about putting together a Dwarf fleet for Man O War and she'd be an awesome flagship.

The dimensions of the dwarf ship (the hull itself) are 3.2cmx6.8cm, with the base it is roughly 3.5x7cm.
The Flaming Scimitar is the Araby ship captained by the "Golden Magus". The ship on its own and the captain is very bad. To balance things up the Flaming Scimitar has access to various elementals that can summoned at the start of the turn, such as the Wind Elemental to increase the movement rate of the ship and which also alters the wind direction. The Fire Elemental that counts as an additional flaming attack that can set enemy ships on fire. And then there are the Water elementals that help patch up damage to the hull.

Smashing stuff :-*
Makes me want to paint my Dreadfleet stuff up!
-
The Tomb Kings ship, "Curse of Zandri" painted up and ready for play. A rather small ship compared to the others in the box, basically a floating sarcophagus. Armed with bolt throwers, catapults and some kind of crystal that can fire incinerating beams - making this ship the only bad guy able to set enemy ships ablaze with a special attack.
The undead captain of this ship also has a really good swashbuckling value making him a dangerous opponent in captain duels during boarding actions.

HAve GW released more ships than what's included in the box?
-
Do any factions have more than one ship, or is it all 1v1 flagships?
-
There are no other ships than what you get in the box, 5 for each side (good / bad guys) and only 1 of each kind.
The game is basically a band of hero ships vs another band of hero ships, so no regular fleets. Most of the ships have small auxiliary vessels but the game is really about these huge ships battling it out through the scenarios of the campaign.
As far as I know GW has killed off this game since it didn't sell well enough (most likely because of the insane pricetag it had on release). I heard GW destroyed all copies that were left unsold in their own stores, so you can only get it from independent retailers if there are any left in stock.

Despite having never played the game this makes me sad.

Nope, as far as I know it was released on the concept "limited edition one-box game" like Space Hulk of a couple of years ago, no expansions, no additions, no anything, no extended range, release-sell and goodbye.
The problem is the game had a bad reputation even before to be on the store shelves.
Sadly I think this bad experience will kill any other GW project to release one-box game for the next 20 years, so lets say goodbye to the gossip about a re-release of Warhammer Quest, a deluxe Blood Bowl and other similar rumours around the net.
If you want more ships you should look for the old ManOWar stuff
-
After a long break I more or less forced myself to finish the remainder of my Dreadfleet collection, I only had 2 ships and some doodads left to paint (well OK - the terrain needs to get painted as well). So I thought it would be a nice break from the French & Indian War themed content that have dominated the blog recently.
The reason for my long break was that my brushes had become really worn out towards the end of painting the last couple of ships a few months ago. I also grew increasingly frustrated painting the Dreadfleet stuff, I love the models and the end result - but I absolutely hate painting them!

I know that feeling, It's hard when you really like the miniature but can't face the painting work. That's usually the death of very promissing projects o_o
-
Thanks, too true. It's one of the reasons I will never get into Napoleonics. I would love to play it but painting stuff up would kill me. For Dreadfleet I "only" have the terrain and some mini-ships left to paint. Hopefully they will not be as tough to get through as the larger ships.
-
Wow, these look great! Especially the Heldenhammer and the High Elf ships :)
Are the banners done freehand?
The water looks really good too.
-
Thanks, the artwork on the sails is sculpted (fortunately) so one only has to paint it :)
The Black Kraken, my last ship from the Dreadfleet box painted up. More pictures on my blog:

The tiny Auxiliary vessels, (cogs, dirigible and dragon) are all painted up. I tried painting the sails and hulls of the tiny ships to make them resemble their parent ship as much as possible for easy identification on the table. They took a bit more time to paint than anticipated, despite their microscopic size and rough details they required some work to look decent. Probably most happy with the dragon which wasn't that exciting and I feared that my lack of enthusiasm would affect the paintjob.
You can see pictures of the rest of the auxiliary vessels over at my blog:

To celebrate that all the ships are at long last finished (and that I only have the terrain left to paint) I took some group pictures to show the collection. Not the best quality pictures but it's hard to take these kind of photos and get the light and sharpness right with my camera - which works better for closeups. But at least you get the idea of how things may look.
More pictures of both fleets can be found on my blog:

I've been loving following your progress on this - beautiful attention to detail and stunning results on all the ships (and dragons!) 8)
Almost makes me want to track down a copy of the game...
