Title: Doors that open and close
Post by: Mister Rab on 16 November 2012, 09:51:37 PM
Although I've since found that some earlier GW games used the same techniques, I was quite pleased with myself for coming up with a few carefully lasercut layers of scrap mdf to make some doors that would open and close without having to be moved off the dungeon tiles of the ongoing game. While it might just be me and my sieve-like brain that can't always remember where they came from, I always found it terribly aesthetically displeasing.

So, here's my effort.

I used this:

to make this:

Not much more at all on my blog (http://geeklydigest.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/doorway-to-adventure.html) relating to this, but feel free to swing by if you're at a loose end. LAFers always welcome  :D

I like them. Very practical. Have you thought about making a portcullis type door?  Shouldn't be too hard with a lasercutter

Brilliant idea! I'll give it a go  :D

Nice idea.  They can also be used as Guillotine style traps when needed.

Funnily enough, the first kid who saw them on my desk thought they were some sort of magic trick guillotine for fingers  lol

You're not the only one who takes issue with non-opening doors on playing fields, trust me... :D

It's been a pet peeve of mine for years too, and I've been giving it a lot of thought over the years, and the solution I came up with is virtually the same as yours! I did think up a way of locking the doors in place when they're up, with a simple sliding bolt system made from metal wire. But when lasercutting, it would be very easy to cut out a suitable hole for a magnet to fit into, so no need for complicated (and prone to malfunction) mechanisms.

I would be very interested in such doors becoming commercially available! Single doors, wide (2square) doors and portculli as well.

And the same would go for scifi looking doors, both single and wide (but no portcullis required there ;) )

Very useful pieces of kit there, to be sure... 8)

Very kind, Daeothar. The laser cutter at school is a nice toy to have even occasional access to  8)
