An 'attempt' you call it?

Bloody good, is what I call it!
Lovely work on the tartan.

Thanks Mason really pleased you like him!

I've called my Blog; "the Mongrels" because I eventually intend on recreating the British 7th Division in the Peninsular.
Unfortunately I decided this after buying my first models, a box of Victrix Highlanders so I guess my planned division will just have to have an attatched division of Highlanders!  :)

Anyway, work has really been progressing on my first Napoleonic battalion. It's actually 3 weeks since I painted my first Highlander and I've now almost finished my Gordon Highlanders. Really enjoying painting these, I've never painted anything historical before so it's a new challenge for me. I've found that it requires quite a bit of discipline to paint all these kilts and straps etc but once the unit starts taking shape they start looking great and it gives you the motivation to keep going!

Enjoying the research side of things too trying to keep things as accurate as possible, but anyway that's enough of my waffle here are some more photos:

Really nice looking troops, my only question is with the red sporrans. I'm no expert but I thought they are white fur and black tassels.

Cheers guys, really pleased you liked them!
Glad you spotted those bullet hits Bandit, wasn't sure if you could make them out in my photos.
Thanks for the high praise Hitman! No one has ever said such nice things about my minis before! As for painting yours... I don't think I could face painting any more tartan!! LoL

Post by: vulcanologist on 18 November 2012, 07:47:49 PM
Hi Fantail
I'm afraid I'm still learning about Napoleonic accuracy. I had no idea what colour to paint the sporrans so just plumped for a strong colour. I'll have to change them now! If you notice the Headdress hackles are also all over the place! I originally thought they were all white but then I read that they were red with white tips but I've also since seen pictures that are white with red tips!?! Any help? Also I didn't know that the light company and grenadier companies had different colour hackles! So I'm in the process of changing them...Green for the light and white for grenadier I hope?
Also you can probably see that the whole battalion have flank company shoulder wings... something else I was unaware of when I started but too late now sorry!
My next planned regiment is going to be my favorites... the 68th Regiment of Foot,The Durham Light Infantry. Do you know if they would have worn grey or white trousers in the peninsular?
Cheers, Vulcanologist

Thanks Leaps, glad you like them. I've started painting a unit of KGL Hussars now. I have to admit it's many years since I've painted horses. I hated painting them then and nothing has changed!

Just a quick update on my progress...
I've completed my first squadron of Hussars! Finished the next 6 horses too, just the riders to do now. I'll try to get some pictures up ASAP.
Ps 68th(Durham Light Infantry) regiment of foot in the peninisular. Does anyone have any good information or color schemes??

Some great work here especially the Tartan on the highlanders....two things you might want to try.....black linning around the white belt straps will really make them pop and I would go a matt varnish to tone the sheen down a tad as well as protecting the minis.

Hi mate.

Are those British hussars Perry plastics? I think they are superb. I really liked your Highlanders as well - probably some of the best 28mm painted tartan I have ever seen.

Hi Brian,
Thank you so much! Really glad you like my Highlanders...still trying to psych myself up to paint the remaining 6...it definitely takes a certain amount of masochism to paint tartan! The Highlanders are Victrix and yes the Hussars are Perry plastics. I thought both sets were excellent! I've just finished another regiment of infantry...this time I used Perry plastics but again I thought they were really good! I'll try to get some pictures taken soon.
Thanks again for your comments.

Those of you who have read my Flames of War posts on my blog (link at the bottom of this post) will know my love for the Durham Light Infantry (DLI)

If you haven't looked at those posts, please do...there is some great history and personal accounts from members of the Regiment.

When I started painting Napoleonics, the first regiment I painted was my Gordon Highlanders. This was purely because they were the only models that my local games store had in stock! My plan quickly evolved though to try and re-create the 7th Division from the Peninsular War (specifically the Battle of Vittoria) because they included the Durham Light Infantry.

The 7th Division is actually very interesting . It was known as 'the Mongrel Division' because it contained such a mix of troops from different nationalities.

Here is my eventual planned units:

1st Brigade: Major General Barnes:

1/6th Foot Regiment

3rd Provisional Battalion

2/24th Foot Regiment

2/58th Foot Regiment

Brunswick Oels (9 coys)

2nd Brigade: Major General Grant:

1/51st Foot Regiment

1/68th Foot Regiment

1/82nd Foot Regiment

Chasseurs Britanniques(French)

3rd Brigade:Major General Le Cor

7th Portuguese Regiment

19th Portuguese Regiment

2nd Cacadores

plus some supporting units of cavalry and artillery.

Well, that's enough of my plan, here is my finished 68th Foot (DLI)

Thanks again for the kind comments guys...
Finished my first unit of British Napoleonic artillery. The 3 nine pounder guns and crew are from the Victrix box set with the addition of a couple of mounted Perry artillery captains.

I enjoyed the change of painting blue rather than red! A few more units of Infantry are planned next and maybe another unit of cavalry.

Comments and criticisms are most welcome as always.... ( oh and just in case anyone wondered..I took the photos before I realized I hadn't finished the barrels..I've now drilled the bores out with a pin-vice and painted them black and  blackened the muzzles with weathering powders to simulate firing usage!)
