In the past few months, I've had the opportunity to try a few new rulesets, including SAGA, Dux Bellorum and Dux Britanniarium. Saga didn't impress me too much (I didn't like the game boards, found them too 'gamey', plus I figured there was something wrong when my levy archers chased away a contingent of Norman knights), but I'm quite keen on both of the duckses. Duces. Ducii. Well, both Dux Brit and Dux Bell.
So I dug out some painted and unpainted models from the lead pile, and sent an order to Rob at Eureka Miniatures USA, and got started on a Saxon warband. For starters, here is the Saxon warlord, Buliwyf

He is the 'action' version of Beowulf. I'd already painted the 'passive' version a few years ago, so tried to match my colour choices as best I could:

Buliwyf is backed up by his champion Hama. Here is Hama in action:

Buliwyf is supported by the Geatish noble Herebeald, shown here active and passive:

A mysterious warrior has joined Buliwyf. No one can figure out his proper name, so he is simply known as 'Ibn'.

Buliwyf is also supported by lower class warriors: spearmen, axemen and archers.

Markers for the game. They can be leadership markers for Dux Bell or shock markers for Dux Brit:

Looking good, Will. Warlords are just starting Saga at the weekend so am bringing my Normans along for a bash.
-
Thanks, Dan! As usual, Eureka minis are a charm to paint. I miss the Warlords - say hi for me, and hope you enjoy saga better than I did!
-
Oops its next weekend. :) btw my Normans are rejects from my Robin Hood project with the shields repainted.

Dux Bellorum allows Saxons to take war hounds as a special unit. In my game with Bob, he was thoroughly annoyed with my hounds, and I was rather surprised at their staying power! I'd expected them to be a sort of 'fire and forget' unit that might chase off a skirmisher unit or two, and then they ended up savaging the flank of the shield wall for several turns.
So, here are the puppies!

I've also painted up a few more elite warriors - shown again with the 'passive' poses from a few years ago, plus the newer 'active' ones.

And finally, some sheep to use as loot or as markers. New ones (Warlord) on the left, older ones (MegaMinis, maybe?) on the right. In all cases, I'm not sure if my painting ability has advanced or regressed!
