Title: Minatures of Shieldmaidens ?
Post by: Engel on 27 November 2012, 08:20:21 AM
I’m in need of historical miniatures of shieldmaidens to my Viking collection.
Any one got any tips?
I don’t want to fantasy looking miniatures but more historical believable miniatures.

Quote
..According to Saxo Grammaticus, both hosts prepared for seven years, and mustered armies of 200 000 men. Harald was joined by the legendary heroes Ubbe of Friesland, Uvle Brede, Are the One-eyed, Dag the Fat, Hroi Whitebeard and Hothbrodd the Indomitable as well as 300 shieldmaidens led by Hed, Visna and Hedborg. Sigurd recruited the legendary heroes Starkad, Egil the Bald, Grette the Evil (a Norwegian), Blig Bignose, Einar the Fatbellied and Erling Snake. Famous Swedes were Arwakki, Keklu-Karl, Krok the peasant, Gummi and Gudfast from Gislamark. They were joined by scores of Norwegians, Finns, Estonians, Curonians, Bjarmians, Livonians, Saxons, Angles, Frisians, Irish, Rus' etc... All picking their sides. Whole forests were chopped down in order to build 3000 longships to transport the Swedes. Harald's Danes had built so many ships that they could walk across The Sound...

The GW LOTR figure of Eowyn on foot is pretty understated (if not particularly historical) and it would scale well with the Red Box figs you are using.

It's easy to find just the unmounted figure cheap on eBay too.

Shadowforge made some female vikingish figures. I had asked Eureka to make them way back in the day, and they volunteered to do the Sandras and wanted me to have Shadowforge do the Valkyries. They didn't turn out as I expected, in fact I ended up with no input really at all into them, but mostly I still like them. They are not everyone's style though. They are available through Eureka now anyway:

The Sandras have never been completed, it still makes me teary I am waiting years later with cash in hand ready to go :(

I noticed they can be found in europe at http://www.fighting15sshop.co.uk/valkyries-208-c.asp a little pricy but maybe I could get some of them.
Keep those sugestions comming... :D

Foundry did a assortment of Shieldmaidens and valkyries, some more historically accurate than others. They often turn up on ebay at £1-£3 a figure, so if you keep a weather eye open you might be able to get a good deal

Perhaps try Dave Thomas on Ebay?
