Title: Marine uniforms
Post by: mysteriousbill on 28 November 2012, 05:32:12 PM
Now I need to paint up some Marines for my VACW2 project. Would the still be using the P1917 uniform in 1933. If so can you recommend a good color for it and one for the campaign hat. The leggings and ammo pouches seem to be a light olive drab, but the uniform is a different shade from the army uniforms.

And the hat is a different shade than the uniform.

Though I have been given to understand they had trouble with their suppliers between wars as far as quality went (paint that wouldn't dry, bronze polish that wouldn't polish, and colors that wouldn't stay right).

The open lapel uniform coat has a pattern date of 1927 so I would assume they wore the standing collar tunic up until then - your 1933 grunts should have the later style.  The wool uniforms are essentially the same color for WW1 and WW2 (in 28mm there is no difference). I can't give you a single vallejo paint that represents USMC FOREST GREEN but it should be similar to German Field Grey with a little bit of brown added to it...the campaign hats are browish khaki felt - I used vallejo GREEN BROWN for mine here:
