Here's the start,going for a Lady of the Lake,Pre-Raphaelite feel (I hope).
-
Looks awesome already!
-
I just know this is going to be brilliant :)
-
Ooooh! Perhaps it is banal of me to say so but I am very much into the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. I have high expectations...
-
Uh,oh. Cheers fellows,Hammers not banal at all :)
I hope to create lots of little details, water lilies, perhaps an jumping trout and so on; I think I'm going to enjoy this very much,it's the thinking I enjoy and seeing what the other entrants come up with, most inspiring :)

I shall tick another "expected entry" off the list. In fact, two.
-
This looks like a piece of art already. The pre-Raphaelite idea is great.
-
Looks great already! Looking forward for the water lilies ... 8)
-
I'm looking forward to a floating or wading nude! ;D

John Waterhouse's Hylas and the Nymphs, eh?

John Waterhouse's Hylas and the Nymphs, eh?
Lacking in culture I had to Google that and I have to say that I heartily approve......
-
Looks like a really good start! I really look forward to how this develops :)
And I bet it weights half a ton or so ;)
-

I hope they work out, little flowers too ;)

You know me too well lol

You got it in one!

Luckily a lot of the base is foam...it still ways a ton though.
-
Either that looks like a great start OR a little bit of an accident and The Lady of the Kitchen is going to give you some grief!

lol Luckily I have a big house, large garden, terrace(with an awning) and an very understanding wife (she's off to the big smoke at the moment to buy me lots of clear nail varnish....). Oh,and I also own an airbrush (I love my air brush).
-
So far;
Off to make an jumping trout :)
-
Looks awesome!
I love the way that it looks so natural and unplanned, so bloody greay work on that!
-
Looks great!
Cheers,
Barry
-
Hats off to you, Guy. That looks incredible.
-
That's looking verrrry pretty!
-
I hope you will plunk a few young ladies with really, really, really thin, wet, clingy blouses in that pond.... (Oh, it's warm in here...)
-
Damn, that looks nice!! :o :o
LB
-
That is a splendid example of a cosy pond hidden away in some remote forest...
I´d like to rest there for a while. However trouts are not the sort of fish that I would expect in a still water.
-
Looking bloody great so far, Mr Wolf!
Love the colouration.
:-*

The Brown trout can be found in streams, river lakes and the sea(esturine),they don't need moving water, they do however need cool oxygenated water(I use to be a trout fishing guide, fishing specifically with flies).
-
Looking great so far.
-
Like the trout idea!
Although, all sweet water fish are for unmanly people looking like mimes when they do the whole fly-fishing thing (this should be read as: I tried it once, fell into the water, got mud up to my ears and it was bloody cold and rainy) ;)
-
lol
-
Troutology at it´s best. I admit I am totally not into fishing at all. I simply enjoy watching them occasionally...
-
That looks excellent!...........I don't mind fish so long as the batter's crispy :)
Why is it only figure painters actually like pre-raphaelite painting? Every pukka artist I've ever spoken to sort of sneers at them.
-
That does look very good indeed 8) Natural to say the least :-*
cheers
James
-
The painting of ;D the stones is fantastic...

A. It's because we are incurable romantics.
B.'Artists' are not allowed to like Pre-Raphaelite painting,it's in their job description,in the 'cool' clause.
Anyway,I know plenty of figure painters who I believe are artists, you yourself my man are one of them :)
-
'Nuff of the chit-chat, I want more pics! ;)
And I like pre-raphaelite paintings as well by the way. Might be the stark highlighs :D
-
Working on my jumping trout at the moment, though the splash is too big; I'll post some 'splash' wip pics tonight :)

That is great!
where on earth did the fish come from, did you scratch build it or is it a bought one?
-
Cheers mate :) It's a scratch build.
-
Ingenious Guy!
I'm so looking forward to seeing the finished photography of this piece, with your trademark eerie, atmospheric shots :)
-
That's going to work a treat, well, it already is but when the rest of the water is in it'll look fantastic 8)
cheers
James
-
Bloody fantastic, Blackie! Awesome execution :-*

Ditto. Plus naked ladies.
-
Great fish, sensational splash! :-* :o
Need to know how you did it, please. ;D
-
Thanks again chaps :)
Great fish, sensational splash! :-* :o
Need to know how you did it, please. ;D
The splash is laughably easy;
1. Some drops of super glue on baking paper (it won't stick when dry,you can peel it back).
2. Lengths of nylon fishing line stuck in the super glue at various angles.
3. Tiny pieces of cling wrap draped over the fishing line frame.
4. Paint on white glue, this softens the look and gives the structure some depth.
5. When the white glue is dry, trim until your happy with the look.
6. If you want to stick something in it or indeed over it ,drill with an pin vice(the super glue is nice and hard for this) and insert another piece fishing line, glue and cut to the appropriate length.
Done :)
-
That trout's a bit of creative genius :-*
-

Seconded!

That looks excellent!...........I don't mind fish so long as the batter's crispy :)
Why is it only figure painters actually like pre-raphaelite painting? Every pukka artist I've ever spoken to sort of sneers at them.
The pre-Raphaelites' code was something like:
1 have genuine ideas to express
2 study nature attentively
3 sympathise with what is direct and serious and heartfelt in previous art, exclude what is conventional and self-parodying and learned by rote
4 produce thoroughly good pictures and statues
I think a lot of "artists" sneer because they couldn't manage those four things.
-
I wish more contemporary artists subscribed to this code.
-
:o
Great idea, Mr Wolf!
:-*
This is going to be some piece of work when it is finished.
Oh, yes!
-
Starting to get there;

What the others said :-*
What did you use for the water?
-
Ooh, I just want to go for a swim!
A true beauty :-*
-
I thought you had to make something? You can't just submit a photo of a real place! :)
Masterful work. Simply stunning.

You have been rumbled, Mr Wolf!
Stunning!
:o :o :o :o :o etc....................
-
lol Thanks chaps. I hope the end result meets my/our expectations.
What the others said :-*
What did you use for the water?
Water based estapol, painted in successive layers :)
Still needs a lot of work till I'm happy and I have been looking at my John Bauer collection for inspiration, which perhaps has complicated things... ;D
Anyway I'm enjoying the project immensely,it's really invigorated my artistic bent(for want of a better term).
Cheers
Guy
-
I'm so envious of that water effect!
-
I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished piece :-* :-* :-*
Cheers,
Barry

Then some of the Swedes on this forum might be very happy! There was a discussion a year ago to do a John Baueresque scenario :) Engel is doing his part with "Tree moss".
As for the finish, got damn! :-*
-
I shall buy the property around this lake and build a huge modernistic casino and amusement park by it with a convenient lake side parking lot.

Actually I'm planning on building a terrain board using the loch as a feature.
Thanks chaps :) A bit more work to go (I keep finding bits I'm not happy with ::)). And there are a few things I want to do yet,so I'll probably end up buggering it up lol
-
Crumbs.
o_o
This is for gaming? Looks like a museum exhibit. :o
-
Wonderful stuff Wolfie. Definitely some naked bathing voluptuous bathers need here .....Norman Lindsay- Sirens types I think ah yes :-*. I'm sure you've got something along those lines 8)
-
The scene from the movies pops into my head when you mention that. Now, who does an Elle MacPherson figure? ::)

Elle MacPherson ........yes exactly ! that's the go wolfie, there's a gap in the market for an Elle if there isn't one already.....now surely. ( not that I would dream of telling how to run your loch ol bean ) lol
-
bloody insanely good

Cheers :)

Lets hope so mate,I have rather indulged myself... ;)

When finished, these will slot into the back of scene; give it a bit depth and mystery to the terrain piece as an whole;

-
Ohh shiny. Another nice picture.
But as stated previusly, it belong in a museum...
-
Quick question, do you choose the rocks you use specifically, picking out the ones that look like scale rocks or is it more random than that?
cheers
James

Hello Jim,
That's a bloody good question. I'm going to sound like a tosser ,I pick them by eye; after
doing an bit of picture research on stone circles (I have a few field guides on the subject), I select my rocks. Slate has a nice scale appearance and I'm happy to use my Dremel, luckily the rocks I chose seem to fit,so no messy rock carving to be done; I also try not to pose the rocks in a too symmetrical fashion,as I mentioned it's all in the eye :) Oh and a lot of planning in my head ;D
Cheers
Guy

Good answer mate (and sort of the one I was hoping for) 8)
Works a treat 8)
cheers

-
What's your preferred method for gluing stone?
-
White glue, most stone is porous or has enough edges, et cetera for it to have an strong firm hold and you can of course mix water based paint into it :)

A bit subtle I admit, though they do add to the depth.
Do you think it is green/lush enough?
Off to make more trees :)
-
She's lush and yes, it is green enough. ;D
-
Guy, this is really gorgeous work.
I love the mood, but I think the photos are a touch dark/flat. Maybe a degree of longer exposure, or some more contrast in the final pics would set it off I reckon. Beuatiful job, anyway :)
-
lol Yeh the finished pics will be much brighter, these are just 'test' shots. There is still much to do and I don't want to show all my cards.
-
Ooohh :-* I think it's just great as it is, dark and atmospheric..
Piece of art, definitely.
-
Cheers Alex,cheers Christian; and here is an brighter picture;

Magnificent !

Absolutely stunning, Mr Wolf!

Amazing work :-* :-* :-*
I want to go for a swim there, how do I get there?
-
Your work surpasses anything I've seen before.
It looks like a real place.
Thanks for sharing and making all of us go green with envy 8)
Best wishes.
-
It should have been 'Build Somewhere'. This just could be a real place. I always liked your stuff but you have now become an official 'Inspiration' ©. I just love it.
-
That is really special........
-
Amazing, somehow glad I couldn't find the time or the inspiration for a piece of scenery I could use, as I would never have been able compete with this. Absolutely beautiful :-* :-* :-*
-
Thank you very much chaps :)

Now be a good chap and tell us all exactlywhere this is, as it just HAS to be photo of a real Loch somewhere.
;)
-
Bloody hell! :-*
:-* :-* :-*
-
That is just amazing. :o :-*
-
This is jaw-dropping work. Probably my favorite piece of terrain ever. It is inspirational in that it makes me want to learn how to do this, and depressing, knowing that I'll most likely never reach the skill level it takes.
-
Wait till he adds the rain! :D
Merry Christmas everyone, by the way :)
-
Pffft! Anyone in a rural area can take a picture out of their window that looks like this.
Oh wait... it's not a picture! ;) :-*
-
This is in a league of it's own. I've impressed more than once by the terrainbuilding talent on this forum, but this goes above and beyond and looks like the real thing. :o
-
Thanks again chaps :) Hope the final photos do the piece justice :)
Wait till he adds the rain! :D
Merry Christmas everyone, by the way :)
Funnily enough I was considering this however it would have involved an box diorama and lots of stretched clear sprue,a bit mad even for me; and it would have defeated the purpose as an gaming piece :)
-
You don't need me to say, Guy. Just amazing.
I'm proud to call you my friend.
-
Thanks Rex,it means a lot :)
What are you up to on Friday or Saturday? Give you a ring tonight ;)

lol I'd better not say what I do for a living then!
-
You are a funny lot lol
-
Just caught up with this thread, this is absolutely stunning and as others have said it really does look real
To those that reckon it a real place I can tell you that it can't be in Guy's native OZ or the girl and the trout would have been chomped by a croc by now lol
-
Nah, spots like that in our South West without crocs but I doubt they are as pretty as this place.
-
A querstion for you BW. It is a well known fact that real rock scales down very wall even to rail model sizes. The problme tends to be the weight of natural rock. Your loch looks stunning but what does it weigh?

If we guess correctly do we win it?
-
I think I passed that place on the way to Kendo's Car Boot Sale...
Beautiful work, Guy. It's really quite magical.
-
If we guess correctly do we win it?
No, that will be the "Count the nipples" competition.
-

It doesn't weigh as much as you would think, for such an large terrain board(it's about 3' by 2'). The bank is built up with foam, then the rocks (slate). I briefly thought about an more John Bauer look, however I would have needed more rounded rocks and I already had the slate. The board will eventually one of 4 or 5 depending on the setting, usable for high fantasy to diesel punk,so I'll be interested to see how it all turns out :)
And thank you chaps once again.
-
wow, it is amazing. A true work of art.
-
Missed this post...
Thanks :)
-
This is stunning indeed have to work harder on my water features for my gaming table harder!
-
this looks amazing :-*
-
Thanks fellas :) Soon I hope to be able to add to it,having a complete set of terrain tiles...Including a village and castle (thanks to James Bibbly).
