Hey guys,
i got the new Hobbit box from GW this morning.
There are 13 dwarfs inside and on the 13th of december is the Hobbit cinema premiere (in Germany), so i'm starting my "a dwarf a day" project.
Dwalin makes the start:

Excellent paintjob! Looking forward to the miniatures are you planning to do a review of the entire box?
-
Fantastic painting job, good luck, looking forward to see all them painted.
-
Great paintjob, looking forward to see how you get on with them all.
-
Brilliant! I love these figures
-
WOW, great job!
-
Nice tats lol
Lovely paint-job all round in fact!
-
Amazoing blog too!
Who makes Ser Johan and Ritter?
-
Great job on the mini. I really like this idea of yours. Looking forward to seeing more Dwarves.
-
An amazing piece of artwork there, HvM!
:-*
The best version of that figure that I have seen.
Certainly makes me re-think my opinion of the new Dwarves.
-
Superb! What are you using for reference material?
-
Fantastic job. So far I've only managed to clean up and stick 9 dwarves together. I look forward to seeing the rest if the Company.
-
Holy Moly - that's an incredible paint job
-
While I'm not really all that enthused with the LotR minis generally speaking, Dwalin is an EXCELLENT mini made more so your FINE brushwork & basing. WONDERFUL WORK!
-
Thank you guys!
Amazoing blog too!
Who makes Ser Johan and Ritter?
They are conversions of WOTR Perry miniatures and vikings heads of Wargames Factory.
Superb! What are you using for reference material?
I'm using the released photographs and clips of the Hobbit movie so far.
Next one: Balin
(http://s7.directupload.net/images/121202/bvs4uf42.jpg)
-
Splendid brushwork! :D
-
Another good one!
-
Up to your customary high standards. I take it these guys are plastics? What are your general impressions of the releases for The Hobbit SBG so far?
-
I haven't quite got my head around the look of the Dwarves from the movie posters but they're looking great here with your brushwork 8)
-
Fantastic painting!
Those Hobbit plastics are really good sculpts, but you've really brought them alive with your paintjobs.
-
Another great job done!
Lovely.... :-*
I was not too keen on these with the GW pj, but, having seen your work, they are growing on me...
-
Yes that's lovely!!!
Saw the trailer and I'm not overly convienced by the film.....
-
Hi HvM, that is some vibrant red on Balin, he is a really nice sculpt but kind of looks like he has a boxer's nose (too many drunken brawls maybe). Dwarves are fun to paint, I have been addicted to painting them recently.
Great stuff
Damien
PS are these guys plastic or metal?
-
Well those are really very nice.
Does this mean no more Mormonts for a while? ;)
-
oh i have looked at the german page.
and i'm aproved, that gw could sell shit, the people would buy it!
65 € for a rulebook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat970005a&prodId=prod1820028a
60 € for four PLASTIC miniatures...oh i forget they call that 'finecast'...so they can demand every price...
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat970013a&prodId=prod1830008a
YEAH! the 'games-workshop-hobby' is great, at least for gw...
-
great paintjob.
-

The quality of the sculpting is very good. They did a great job on the faces.

The Mormonts get some new stuff mid december ;)

Amazing! You can really paint!
But these dwarves lot much more human that Gimli in LOTR...
-
Another great job.
I am really enjoying getting a new Dwarf every day.
Thank you very much!
Keep it up!
:D
-
Classy paint jobs and so much better than the ones in white dwarf
-
Impressive job on these dwarves. They look better than on the GW site

Not sure this is the place for another GW bashing.

Not sure this is the place for another GW bashing.
Agreed, there is a thread some where though I bet!
-
Lovely paintwork. I'm still stilly surprised by the styling of the dwarves in The Hobbit, especially compared to Gimli in LotR. They seem almost human, rather than dwarf, do you have any other LotR so we can see height comparisons?
But back on thread great paintwork again and I'm impressed you can paint one up a day.

Yes and to such an amaziing quality too! Please tell me you aren't working full ime too!

As you can see there are huge differences about the dwarf heights.

Outstanding again. I am really enjoying this post.
-
I agree with Quendil on both counts: the minis are WONDERFUL little creations, AND the thread is a treat to follow. GREAT WORK!
-
These are getting better and better! Though I admit my favourite so far is Dwalin. ;)
-
Another great paintjob!
:-*
Looking forward to tomorrow and our next dose of 'Daily Dwarf' goodness..
-
This is becoming my daily cocaine !
Wonderful again.
-
Outstanding again. I am really enjoying this post.
Agreed, shame there are only 13!
-
I'm quite enjoying this...also great to see such good paint jobs to give a different perspective from the GW painted versions.
-

Come on.
Where is it?
We are waiting!
;)
-
That "tall dwarf" is ridiculous, but your painting is sublime. :-*
-
Absoloutely lovely paintjob on these miniatures. A lovely idea too that I wish I did myself! Unfortunately I have a few miniatures in the way left to do. I have started the goblins though myself!
Very inspiring though, keep it up, I know it will be hard but it would be fantastic to see them all in your great painting style.
I particularly like your paintjob on Dwalin. :)
-
I'm personally offended(yes I take these thing personally ;D) by Peter Jackson's view of dwarfs...both from the LoTR and what I've seen of the Hobbit....he seems to think they are only fodder for comic relief...
...but that is beside the point...your painting is absolutely amazing and inspiring...I will enjoy watching this thread progress.
Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Blue

Hm, are they good for anything else...? :D
The problem with filming the LotR or the Hobbit is the lack of any real characters (which is of course a "problem" of the books in the first place). I actually liked Gimli a lot - not for his part of the comic relief (which is just plain film tradition) but because he was actually a person with the giggest psychological insight into his friends. And of course you had to make him different from the Boromirs and noble humans of the movie - if Gimli was just like them, where is the difference between human and dwarves culture? At least Peter Jackson thought about that problem even if his choices were not always the best.
I can agree with your criticism of the dwarves in the Hobbit movie. Not that I have seen it but to think that the dwarves (who are after all the King of Dwarves and his most loyal followers - noblemdwarves) look like a gang of lunatics is rather offputting.
And I saw no reason why they should have these non existing beards etc. - until my wife pointed out that no girl would like to see Richard Armitage with a long black beard. Let's face it: a hobbit and thirteen dwarves... where is the eye-candy for Jane Doe?
-
As a man that's normally used to GW style dwarves I have to say, I like these better. Cracking painting BTW!! :o :o
-
So despite GW's claims that the new game is backward compatible with the old game, we can see from the height of the Dwarves that the figures at least are not! For %$&*'s sake! That dwarf is taller than the wood elf!
-

I think Dwalin is actually a rather huge dwarf in the movies. The Noldo elf is from the very first range of LotR miniatures for the Fellowship of the Ring movie. The figures were 25mm style but alas the scale has developed to the 28mm standard again. So even later LotR minitures were not compatible to the ones from the first movie. A shame really but unfortunately that's the way it goes. But looking at the Balin miniature (the one in red) shows that he at least is about the size of the generic plastic dwarves of LotR.
@HvM
Great painting. I like the way you use colors and the neat details you always pick out. I've been admiriring your stuff for Game of Throne and I think you've become even better with these dwarves.
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
WOW!!! Awesome paint job!! I am definitely looking forward to seeing the rest of the gang. Thanks for sharing.

:o eye-candy
-
Amazing job
He looks like Aragorn....
-
Great paintjob!
I love how everyone says about breaking the Warhammer style mould of fantasy miniatures and then when someone does put something out more challenging, everyone moans!!!
-
I really like this thread - keep up the good work. :)
-
Not sure that many people have moaned here. For my part it was an observation about the style of Dwarf in the film. I'm sure anyone can maon about the quality of the scuplts, they look lifelike!
I must say this thread has done more to inspire me to see the film thatn the trailers or other official sources.
-
Beautiful brushwork and color-choice, chapeau!!
And the miniatures are wonderful sculpts, I'm thinking about using them as a group of adventurers with mixed humans, dwarfs and in-betweens. When they will be available from Ebay real cheap in a couple of months.
With the dwarfs from Tolkien's "Hobbit" they don't have anything to do.
But that is true for this (three-parts ??!! o_o ???) film anyway.
-
That "tall dwarf" is ridiculous, but your painting is sublime. :-*
As a long time fan of Dwarf-dom I was inclined to agree but there are variations in height of Humans, why not Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Goblin, and Orc too?
Just saying...
Gracias,
Glenn
who restricts his dwarves in his armies to the general range of 18-21 mm in height...
-
Fantastic paint job, really like the stubble!
Damien
-
Beautiful brushwork!
:-*
I really like that sculpt as well.
Just NOT as a Dwarf!
-

I agree with your first point here. Can't really comment on the second one since I haven't seen the movies yet. However, I find it perfectly legitimit to add the connector between the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings as an own movie, especially since Gandalf does hint at these things in the book.

Love the beard color on this last one. As I'm partially through painting a Dwarf army do you mind sharing techniques/recipe?
Thanks!

Another great job, though the mini was not as good asthe previous ones (esp Bombur and Strider Dwarf)
-
So once you get the gang all finished, you have two choices....
1) I can trade you my unpainted set for your painted set!! (preferred option by me)
2) Would you like to paint my set up??? lol
Great work...Can't wait to see the rest.

How? How? How are you managing to painting a beautiful mini to that standard each day? You must have waaaaaay too much spare time on your hands!!!
-
I've started work on the Great Goblin, it is a joy to paint. Really nice centrepiece.
I can't wait to start my Dwarves. I think I will do a few before doing the other 18 Goblins (I haven't even assembled the extra 36 that I bought)...
The scenery looks a bit cool too!

Amazing, best yet!
Half dwarf, half Dunlending!!!
-
All simply great brushwork.
Not a fan of some of the minis personally, don't scream dwarf to me for some reason?
-
I am absolutely loving this thread, and it may have convinced me to buy the set (the dwarves anyway). I too thought maybe the didn't look 'drwarfy' enough when I first saw them. However, I wonder if this is just because us miniatures gamers are not used to seeing dwarves presented as individuals? We are used to seeing ranks of similar look dwarves, not a band of individual adventurers.
-
Brilliant!
Some great new minis to catch up with.
:-*
While they all look great (not to keen on the 'twisted-dough' beard...) my favourite by far is Bifur.
Rastafarian Dwarf!
Yar mon!
:-*
-
Really love this thread. Hopefully when you get past day 13 you still have some nice things for us to look at.
gamers are not used to seeing dwarves presented as individuals? We are used to seeing ranks of similar look dwarves, not a band of individual adventurers.
I also agree with this. I think the minis are lovely, maybe not what everyone would expect from a dwarf or as you imagined them when reading the book but they look good against images from the movie and the sculpts look nice too.
-
I have just recieved the "escape from Goblin Town" box and I must say I am very much impressed by your painting. The miniature's faces are rather small and you certainly gvae them a lot of character. Excellent work!
-
Thank you!

Yeah they are cracking little figures! Nice painting, I must admit when I paint one figure at a time you can actually achieve a good standard in a few hours these are lovely figures
-
Cracking work all in all and congrats on keeping the output going!
-
Lovely additions.
:-*
I think that Fili has now become my favourite.
I may have to get me one of those...

- coating of GW Baneblade Brown.
- thinned Brown Ink
- GW Baneblade Brown again
- adding more and more GW Kislev Flesh to the previous one
- for final highlights add some GW Screaming Skull to the mix
-
Nicely done, sir! That's something to look at.
BTW, I noticed GW doing the same thing with Bilbo: why is he blond? Not that I mind but in the movie his hair is really dark brown.
-
Sir, the photo with the light is simply STUNNING. what did you use for this?
-
Simply amazing all of them!!
Could you give us a rough list of the colours you used? There are some blends that I cannot identify or guess and there are many dwarves waiting on my desk... :)
-
Excellent paintwork, those Trolls are lovely! Very different to look at without the pink skin! :)
I like the painting guide, I might do something similar for mine!
Gapfilling them takes serious time and energy, so well done that man!
-
:-* :-* Those trolls are amazing. I'm definitely going to be trying to replicate that skin tone on mine. Much nicer than GW paint jobs and better executed. Love the cauldron too.
-
Hi guys,
just want to let you know that i sell the dwarves, Gandalf and Bilbo on ebay right now:
http://www.ebay.de/sch/d_wego/m.html?item=130889754424&rt=nc&_trksid=p4340.l2562 (http://www.ebay.de/sch/d_wego/m.html?item=130889754424&rt=nc&_trksid=p4340.l2562)
I also will ship them worldwide.
Greetings from Germany,
Daniel
-
And I see that you already have quite a few bidders. Good luck.
-
good luck indeed!
but i don't think it was wise to split them: as a group they would have an added value, and some crazy people willing to pay an even excessive cost are out there :)
-

I tried that before. Nobody wanted to buyed the big deal lol

well, a big deal needs more time to find the appropriate buyer.
But still, looks like your bids are incerasing fast, so all the best! :D
