I was recently looking for a Missing Link that bwas in a non-aggressive pose to be used as the mate for one that I already had.
As I could not find anything that would not take a fair bit of conversion I thought that I would have a go at sculpting one.
I have not tried sculpting a figure before, although I have dabbled with green stuff in the past for conversion purposes, so please be gentle.
:D

And with a 28mm figure for scale

Comments, criticism and advice, particularly from the sculptors out there, would be appreciated as I enjoyed doing this and intend to have a few more cracks at it.

Nice work - you should be proud of that.

Great work, and that's good news because I have a log wish list....

Wow, this is a great first attempt! The face is a bit rough, but full of character.
The hands are really good , better than some commercial models. The thing I like most though is the fur. You have done a great job. Its very easy to make fur look really crap, and you have made it look like fur!
Good work, keep it up!

Nice one Mason. Is he just for personal use or are you going to get him casted...
-
Apart from the pose....i would like mine to be a bit more active.....this looks very, very well indeed.
-
are you going to get him casted...
I thought that said something else when I first read it :o
Very nice indeed - the fur is great and I too think the fingers in particular are brilliant - very orangutangy 8) (Fancy doing some Jaokaero by the way?)
As you know, I'm no sculptor myself (teddy bears anyone!) but I've heard tell of small ball bearings that are great for eyes - they'd look great underneath those characterful hooded eye-lids!
You've got to sculpt this guy as well for a more dynamic pose -

Impressive! I like the pensive seated pose a lot. And the fur looks great. The face is rough but very expressive: just as beasts like this should be.
You should do a standing enraged version, and replace one with the other when the players inevitably anger/awaken it (her? I think I spot a wrinkled dug).

VERY NICE! I love his expression...he reminds me of Danny DeVito for some strange reason. The hands fit the piece well. First attempt or not he is VERY WELL DONE!

Thanks for the comments, chaps, much appreciated!
:)
Regarding the fur: To be perfectly honest I found the fur to be the easiest part, the face and hands were much more tricky.
The face is a little rough, and I think that I would approach it differently next time.
This time I tried to add individual features as I went, but next time I think I will try to get a basic shape of everything in at first, as I had trouble getting the newer pieces of green stuf to stick in place when I 'pushed' it about.
As for the pose, I was looking for a much more relaxed pose than the one that I already have, which is suffering from PMT:

I chose the sitting pose as, when I was browsing the interweb for inspiration, I found a piccie of a seated Orangutan that I liked and went for that.
This pose caused problems of it's own, and I think that I would have found it much easier by doing an upright stance.
Making an armature of a seated Orangutan was fun all by itself!
As for doing any other versions, I am tempted.
I am not in any rush for more Links, though, as I have the original model to use as its mate.
Here is a shot showing the two together.

I also have the the Four A Miniatures Alf as their first child.
The second is being carried in the arms of the self-sculpted one.

(Not the best picture, but you get the idea...)
Thanks again for the comments and tips, chaps.
Must try harder...

Very, very nice, you have done a cracking job. :)

Looks cracking to me Paul :-*

Hah! 8) Reminds me of the Darwin Monkey cartoons:

It's a good first effort anyway. I'd focus a little more on teasing the hair out a bit into straggly strands (like the other model you posted) as that seems to be some 80% of the model.

Thanks for the positive responses, chaps.
:)
Major_Gilbear: I have a few areas that I may go back to, so I may do a bit more 'teasing' on those parts.

I guess that now that your creation's gender has been established as a female the Danny De Vito observation is no longer applicable.
Mother & Child are TERRIFIC LOOKING & usable both in Fantasy & Strange Aeons...very clever. You are a natural; this is, I'm sure, just the start of many unique beasties. VERY WELL DONE!
-
To be perfectly honest, DeafNala, it started off with the intention of being female, but I think that IT could be used as either.
No reason, in this age of equal opportunities, why the male cant be holding the baby... ::)
Also tempted to call my effort male, as the bought one seems scarier as a female!
(That De Vito observation did make me laugh, though!)

That's pretty damn good, Mason!

Hey now! That is really good for a first attempt; what will you be doing for your second attempt?

Damien: I have a hankering to try some Beastmen, but dont want them too GW style, as I think that particular route has been done enough.
Or maybe some Cthulhu inspired stuff...not sure yet.
