Well after a few years lurking in the inspirational shadows of this board I've finally taken the plunge and am putting together a Pulp world!
This thread will track my sanity blasting attempts into this and include miniatures, scenery, random rules and battle reports.
I have slowly been amassing components to pull together a Pulp inspired world so will post progress here over the coming weeks.
Initial games will be based around Egypt - thinking the following:
"Help Mummy! I've fallen and can't find my Fez" - aka "Is that a Mummy in your Targine?"
Scene 1: Cairo backstreets - Player factions drawn to Cairo to locate missing plane - must acquire guides to take them
Scene 2: The Desert near oasis - Players rush to plane wreckage and then find clues of nearby burial chamber/temple
Scene 3: The Desert outside burial chamber - Players must find ways to enter temple
Scene 4: In the hidden Temple - players vs cultists and some summoned surprises
Fade to credits...
Game System/Rules wise am still a bit undecided...
I've recently purchased both Chaos in Cairo and .45 Adventures and would also like to look at Strange Aeons as well as I have played Call of Cthulhu for many years... might end up doing a custom mix of all 3?
By the way does anyone know if you can purchase a pdf version of Strange Aeons? I live in Australia/The Dreamlands so trying to keep postage down where possible!
Work in progress shots of scenery and miniatures to follow...

Hello Pulpthulhu, welcome to the world of pulp gaming.
I look forward to seeing some pics of your stuff and some after action reports.
Cheers

Hello and welcome! Just try to PM Unkle Mike about Strange Aeons, he’s the guy behind that great rules set.
We’re looking forward to read about your adventures.
-
thanks guys good to be here - thanks for the Strange Aeons tip will drop him a line!
OK some of the early work in progress shots to get things started...
** apologies for crappy lighting and image quality just a few quick iphone shots for now - will do some properly lit and shot snaps once things are
Location scouting aka test run of Cairo backstreets:

The buildings are from 28mm Crescent Root - fresh out of the box despite being unpainted still think they look amazing. If anyone is thinking of buildings for their Egypt/middle east pulp settings these are fantastic!
The palm trees are from Pegasus Hobbies (Palm Trees Style A No. 6501 (and Style B 6502 not shown have thinner smaller leaves) - there are smaller versions of the same sets so be careful which ones you order) - I bought these off Amazon - basic 2 colour spray paint job on each of leaves and trunks and still to base them properly.
The desert floor is a $15 section of textured "desert" yellow curtain from a local fabric shop - given I have dozens of miniatures to paint I am cutting corners where I can - still I think it does the job.
Same view again with some miniatures and tape measure (6" extended) for scale:

heh thanks hmm stuck pics up on Flickr but doesn't give you an image link - might have to rethink :)
-
Right followed directions from another post to get it working - hopefully all sorted now - if you have the same issues posting from Flickr do the following - "Share This" menu on the top left of each photo, open the "Grab the HTML/BBCode" part, and select "BBCode" at Medium size.
-
Looks fantastic!
Will keenly follow your progress, will have to start a blog of my own as soon as I have amassed enough stuff to show.
-
Nice setup!

The task ahead:

I invested in a bunch of Pulp miniatures
- mostly from the wonderful http://pulpfigures.com/
- and a few from the following:

Whilst I have a bunch of miniatures in various states of undress thought I'd get a bunch together to demonstrate how I go about painting them:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8215/8259788609_62b2720289.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8259788609/)

Trim the flash, undercoat with Chaos Black spray from Games Workshop, base coat the skin, do the eyes (I really suck at these!), base coats of other colours, shade, highlights/drybrushing... again all work in progress!

This is looking good. I like the buildings.
-
Thanks - can't take credit for the buildings that's all these guys:
http://www.crescent-root.com/pages/Product/28mm/28mm_series1/28mm_series1.html
Again I ordered the unpainted ones and they are still unpainted on the game table - I think are fantastic as is! If I get through painting all the miniatures (!) I might come back and paint these but again given we are talking the desert etc you can get away with white :P
-
this one is my favorit:
A bit pricey, 100$, but it's a worth it, I guess. Though shipping from USA to Germany would probably kill it for me.
-
I would like to own the lot but won't buy them at those prices.
-
There's no reason you couldn't have a go at scratch building the buildings based on the pics - not too complicated I would think some styrofoam/foamcore/balsa wood/plasticard for the walls, steps, doors, removable roof and some plaster/spakfiller for wall texture etc. The Palm trees you could scratch build with sticks/wire/modelling clay for the trunk and cut out paper for the leaves.
Speaking of scratch building thinking ahead a few scenes for my hidden temple/burial chamber - I've always wanted to build some of the Hirst Egyptian molds and have been inspired by another crazy builder located here - http://hirstarts.yuku.com/topic/4830/Egyptian-Tomb-WIP#.UMXToYOTySp
Based on his description and amazing pics (worth checking that link!) I have decided to create an Egyptian tomb based on modular 9x9 inch boards. See below for a pile of 5mm MDF board (cheap from local hardware) I chopped up into the 9x9 bases:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8493/8259789137_54ecafa5a3.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8259789137/)
IMG_0606 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8259789137/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
You may have seen a mock up board in "the task ahead" photo earlier in the thread - here's a close up to show you with a few of my Egyptian Hirst plaster cast pieces plonked on it. If you look closely you can count 9x 1 inch x 1 inch Hirst Egyptian floor tiles down each side so the 9x9 square works well...
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8218/8260857136_513be914e9.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8260857136/)

Will post more on the Hirst molds later...

You're off to a great start! We were unboxing those same Pegasus trees last night. lol
If you haven't settled on set yet, I'd like you to give our Pulp Alley rules a look.
You can check us out at -- http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/pulpalley/
HAVE FUN!

lol enjoy those trees they were a bitch to take off the sprues I stabbed myself about 10 times! :)
thanks for the heads up about Pulp Alley will take a look !
-
Will it be all players working together against you, or will each player have a small team and oppose the other teams.
Either way I've run Where Heroes Dare in such a situation and find it works.

Don’t mean to be a downer on some of the comments here but I guess I’m just the fly in the ointment and many times like to take the other side of the argument.
I always find it sad at the worst and interesting at best when I hear people ooohh and ahh about a mini or piece of terrain and then complain on the price….ok sometimes the price might be a bit high but most of the time they are in reality cheap. Take the pieces here, obviously beautiful, well thought out, the painted ones awesome, but yet people balk at the price. I have as many of us designed, built, cast, and sold items such as this and as I think most of you who have done it would agree is a lot of work, cost, and to keep selling on a regular basis needs to be done at a profit that allows one to stay in business. There are many, many, considerations made when pricing an item like this, was the designer a part of the company, or designing on salary/commission, the time and cost to produce the molds, difficulty in molding (miscast items), life of the mold (number of cast you get before mold is unusable), they also maintain websites with pictures, order and shipping departments. There is also the fact that this hobby of ours is a niche hobby, how many of these is the manufacturer really going to sell in a given time span? How many does he have to sell before he STARTS to see a profit? All this has to be figured into the cost of a piece as well as overhead to run your shop, rent, employees, electric, equipment, and more. Not all these manufactures are run for free out of grandma’s basement… Many of them are trying to be legitimate businesses and stay in business for more than a few years unlike many businesses in our hobby.
Now I understand that many of us look at something like this and say “no way! I can build that! Cheaper, faster, better or whatever” Perhaps you can, perhaps you’ll find that it was much tougher than you thought…. but the fact is they are not building this for you, they are building it for the other hobbyist that either do not have the time, skills, tools, space, or just do not want to do it themselves. These fellow hobbyists deserve to have the opportunity to be able to buy nice terrain to use in their games like the rest of us who may have the time, skills, and drive to do this ourselves. Those companies who provide this service need to make a profit like any other business and I feel we do them and our fellow hobbyist a disservice when we complain about pricing that is clearly not that expensive when you really take ALL into consideration. We make those who opt for this item feel as if he or she is less because they could not build it or purchased it and some how paid to much. We also hurt these companies by labeling their product as overpriced. Its tough enough to make a living and last more than a few years for most companies in the miniatures world, many companies are around 2-3 years at best those that last longer are in the minority compared to how many start up and offer us the wide variety of figures and terrain we enjoy now ,but fail.
I don’t feel that we have to stifle the commenting on pricing, just we have to word it better, so as to say things like “well they are nice but not on my budget” or “I think I’ll have a go at building it myself” and of course if it is truly overpriced then give them both barrels but think about everything that goes into it before passing judgment.
Just my 2 cents…. And yes “I'm a squeaky wheel”
Bill W
PS, given the time allotted for minis I have in my life and the other projects I have to complete as well as feeling I could not do much better if at all, I would certainly buy these for the price and may well do so!
PSS here is a test, this is a piece I sculpted myself, cast, and have produced for my own games. I would like people to put a price on it that they would be willing to pay or think is a fair price for it. I'll tally them up and compare with what I have into producing the item and how many I have to sell to make a profit. The Sphinx is large 10" long x 4" wide x 7" tall without the sand which will ad 3-4 inches all around.
PM ME YOUR ANSWER! PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT HERE ON PULPTHULU"S TOPIC

The model does not have the “sand” build up around the base. That is left off the original cast so as to make it easier/cheaper to mold and allow for user to customize it to fit in their game. The second picture is one casting I broke up and took a step further. ALL pricing should be done for the first picture.

mysteriousbill - good Q unsure probably knowing my gamer group they will be in it for themselves so separate factions that may work together when required. The final scene where they raid the underground tomb will force them to work together I think but who knows how it will turn out? :) Thanks for the heads up on yet another Pulp rules set I will have to investigate :P - Where Heroes Dare?!
vonkluge - well said and wow your 2 Sphinx's are amazing! I have no idea how to price them looking at the detail I bet it was many hours working up the originals! Did you sculpt them in modelling clay?

Love them sphinxes!!!!

Sweet looking table!
My only suggestion would be to half the size of your table and tuck all the buildings closer together. Some of my favourite games have been on really tight, claustrophobic tables, plus buildings close together allows for pulptastic stunts like leaping from one flat roof to another across alleys, sliding down fabric awnings and similar insanity!
Vonkluge, it might be better to take your discussion of fair prices for scenery to it's own thread, not really fair to derail Pulpthulhu's thread here. (Oh, and the Sphinx is awesome, in all it's guises!)
-
No intension to derail the thread but the comments were made here about his buildings and it is relevant here. I will change the request for feed back to PMS direct to me. I'm not sure I have seen a topic here on LAF that did not go off topic at some point... lol!
To make up for any inconvenience to Pulpthulu I will if he wants send him a Sphinx for his Desert Pulp game as Im sure he can fit it in. I dont know where you live Pulpthulu but I would just ask that you pay postage. (its heavy and unpainted) 8)
I think the building spacing is fine once you dress it up with all the flotsam and jetsam of a Desert town, Donkeys, bazaar, peddlers, camels, etc.....ok maybe a few more buildings closer cause I like wirelizards Idea of jumping from building to building and some alleys where you can get trapped...but the more I look at these building the more I like them and its starting to rekindle my interest in the GASLIGHT desert games I did a few years back. I am definitely going to pick up the same set for starters, then perhaps a few of my own... ;)
Bill W
-
Thanks for the suggestion Wirelizard when we play I'll have at least some of the buildings closer together to allow for rooftop dashes and back alley fights!
No dramas at all Vonkluge and will definitely not say no to a wonderful Sphinx! :)
Your comments re flotsam and jetsam have also got me thinking and now on the hunt for some dressing to add to the streets. Have found a few animals that should work well:

and have started work on scratch building some crates/sculpting some food sacks/barrels/urns etc
this project is getting out of hand :P
-
This looks like it will be a fun and great looking game.
As to your tiles with the hirst arts stuff, why 9" tiles?
I'm planning similar modular tiles, but am using a 8" tile so I can mix and match to fill a 2' square board.
Thanks for the inspiration.
-
Thanks Amalric
- re Hirst tiles going to be 9 x 9 vs 8 x 8 - 2 reasons:
1) the mdf boards I purchased from the hardware happened to cut evenly into 9 x 9 inch modular blocks so pure laziness/chance :)
2) I am planning to have a wall on the outer tiles and at least one large and/or multiple smaller dress items (statues, treasure piles, rubble etc) on each block so that reduces floor space for players to run around on thus figured 9x9 1 inch tiles would give me a bit of extra space. Also if I make each board have a 3 tile wide entrance then that leaves 3 tiles either side for walls/other details which is nice and symmetric and allows a few players to enter a room at once vs say a 2 x inch entrance.
see the Hirst forum link earlier in this thread (post with the pic of pile of mdf boards) to someone that created a massive Egyptian tomb - that has been my main inspiration.
speaking of which on the Hirst front have been casting for ages and figure i need to speed up the process so had a go at making my own casts for the first time:

The rubber product is called Ultrasil - basically 2 parts white rubber and blue hardener, mix and voila :P. I glued some hirst tiles down (3x3) to the base, surrounded with clay sealed edges to hold it all in, painted the mixed rubber over the top (reduces air bubbles?) and then poured the rest in. A bit of vibration (I use 2x $10 back massages as didn't want to shell out for a professional set up) and leave overnight and think it came out pretty well given I have no idea what I am doing...
-
Nice job on making the extra molds. That's really going to cut down on the time!
I'm enjoying your thread alot. You keep coming up with new things for us to try out as well. :D
THANKS!
-
FYI for those that don't want to invest in expensive dental platforms etc these are the $10 back massagers that I use to vibrate my casts to remove air bubbles - they work really well just stick them under a tray with molds on top and shake things up! :)

In the background you can see remnants of the Hirst tiles I used as masters - damn things were tough to rip up but will be recycled as rubble...
-
While given your obvious talent in maing stuff you probably dont need much help in finding "flotsam and Jetsam" but check Steves site for inspiration! He does a great roman market and in north africa things in 1890 were much the same as in roman tims...lol!
I got you PM about the Sphinx, I worry on the postage if I cast with present material in the shop so after the holiday I may get down to my cting supplier and find a lighter casting material that is still strong enough. So dont fret if you do not here from me for a bit until I sort this out.
Bill

thanks Bill - Steve's market stuff is great will draw from that - keep them coming! :)

Thanks for the reply about the 9" tiles.
Your answer makes perfect sense.
Great start on the plane wreck.
I have that exact toy for my pulp hero's ride as well and hope it doesn't end up the way yours has. ;)
Very inspirational thread.
I look forward to more.
Thanks!

Nice job on breaking up the plane. Thats going to look really good!

OK peoples I have to admit there's no need to panic I still have a working spare of the plane :P
Here's a few shots of the next stage downed version - very weathered and dusty as it is for a desert map:

Will add some more loose wires, black oil/smoke stains etc but for now just trying to churn out some basic pieces!
Looking at the board for scene 2 it looked a bit empty despite palm trees, oasis and plane wreckage so I decided to add a few tents/lean to's into the mix...

I made these with some .7mm wire and kitchen paper towel dipped in PVA water mix, draped over the frame and then once dry painted and drybrushed. They were very quick and easy to make I just tore paper towel and am sure of you wanted to measure and cut it exactly you could get more symmetrical ones. I think it looks kinda pulpy as is - the texture of the paper towel adds an interesting element...

Scene 2 will start the next morning after the characters have travelled from Cairo to the site arriving late at night. The factions will wake up to find the wreckage and other factions in front of them with clues etc to search.
-
Excellent stuff, both the plane and the tents/leans. Do you happen to have that same plane as intact version as well? So that you can get the adventurers airborne in one "episode" and end it with a big crash... starting next one with the plane crash scenario.
-
I'd just like to say, your Cairo board looks fantastic, but I really love that Sphinx, especially the broken up one!! :o
-
This is a seriously good thread to follow for inspiration.
:-*
Will be checking back regularly for a an update and a 'fix'.
Thank you!
-
Great ideas for both the tents and the broken up airplane.

Was walking past local petstore the other day and found these 2 beauties in the aquarium section:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8080/8317416700_b521234067.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8317416700/)
IMG_0674 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8317416700/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
If I was being picky they could use a bit of drybrushing at some stage to get rid of the small green bit on side of head if I get the chance but really they are great as is - in fact 1 has already starred in our first Pulp game even hosting a plot point on the top - see thread here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=49114.0 which shows back shot of it...
A few work in progress 28mm minis in front for scale...
-
Speaking of plot points I found some great ones for an Egyptian based Pulp scenario/campaign - look at Crocodile Games and their AEgyptus line (Icons and artifacts - https://www.crocodilegames.com/store/itemList.cfm?catID=23&sort=prodID)...
Mine turned up in the mail the morning of our first game so a very rushed job to get them together in time - quick black base spray, gold paint job and basing and voila...
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8220/8317417240_779da739ea.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8317417240/)
IMG_0669 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8317417240/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
Just based on 20mm bases with a bit of spakfiller base coated black and dry brushed desert sand colour. Senior Ferrari for scale and yes that could be the Ark of the Covenant!
-
Another part of my Crocodile Games order included some minis I will use for random encounters/perils/plot points to mix things up.
3 Scorpions and sinister Fu Manchu type piece for scale (from the amazing http://pulpfigures.com)
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8501/8316362613_561bcd74c7.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8316362613/)
IMG_0670 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8316362613/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
4 Cobras and Indy type piece for scale ("Snakes why did it have to be snakes?!")...
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8359/8316362481_b729de1353.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8316362481/)
IMG_0672 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8316362481/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
Again these were all very quickly painted to get them on the table in time - both sets had a base coat of black and then brown drybrush, with additional dry brush yellow bands and spots on the Cobras...
-
I'm really liking all those extra bits you've collected. And using them for plot point was a great idea!
Thanks for posting.
-
Been working on some more scenery bits and pieces...
My order finally arrived from Scotia Grendal and have to say I am impressed by their pieces especially the centre one below:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8223/8367461004_d6874bebd8.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8367461004/)
IMG_0684 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8367461004/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
The photos and crap lighting don't do it justice the centre piece is great and will add sense of scale/height to the game board...
They all came up well with just minor flash trimming required, a wash in soapy water, base coat and dry brush:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8496/8366394063_46f77cac6f.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8366394063/)
IMG_0694 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8366394063/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
I might paint up some of the hieroglyphics and statues a little but still undecided - they look great just as is sandstone weathered type effect.
You can order the pieces here http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&zenid=eb35c5c904d0eb0f17cf1a6cd952778f&keyword=egypt)
Have been casting out of the molds I made earlier in the thread so painted up a few squares to see how they'd look:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8083/8367460750_f760e0eff6.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8367460750/)
IMG_0699 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8367460750/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
- think they might need to be lighter still so minis pop out more again crap lighting makes them seem darker than they actually are...
And combining the 2 just to see how I could set things up...
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8499/8367460784_16590198c5.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8367460784/)

A nice temple entrance...
-
Very nice indeed! :o Planning on doing proper indoors for the temple as well?
-
WOW, those look really nice! :-* :-* :-*
I'm hoping to see them in action!!
-
Very nice indeed! :o Planning on doing proper indoors for the temple as well?
Heh Pocoloco
yes definitely be working on doing temple interiors - see early in this thread for a Hirst link I posted to a massive temple that was my initial main source of inspiration/sanity loss for doing this.
Using the Hirst blocks gives you endless possibilities and detail but takes a hell of a long time to cast it all! Trying to cut a few corners hence my first attempt at learning to create 3x3 tile squares moulds - will use lessons learned here to try and attempt other moulds of wall sections and floor details to speed the build process along...
-
Thanks for the photos of everything - seriously tempted with the Scotia Grendel stuff to do a temple of my own seeing as my mate John is never going to get around to doing anything with the bits he bought. :D
-
Thanks Dave and lol Big Martin...
Might test drive them this w/e...
Also as if I don't have enough already to do have been hunting down a bunch of Plasticville buildings that have started to arrive so will be painting them up in the coming weeks too...
-
Also as if I don't have enough already to do have been hunting down a bunch of Plasticville buildings that have started to arrive so will be painting them up in the coming weeks too...
Great! I've been looking at those too. There are definitely some O gauge buildings that scale very nicely next to 28mm.
-
Great project - Pulp is what brought me to this forum years ago, and I still cherish the genre, although my gaming has been paused due to unemployment and frantic job-search.
The Crescent Root buildings are absolutely ace; I approached CR some years ago asking for postage fares to Denmark, but they turned out to be absolutely prohibiting - and at that time they did not have any Europe distributors (I don't know if they've got some by now).
-
Some of the bits and pieces I ordered last year have started to turn up in the mail! :)
I mentioned I've been tracking down some Plasticville O/S scale buildings which work well with 28mm scale. They have nice detail on them (brickwork, tiles, window panes etc) and they just click together so you can pull them apart for storage. Whilst you could get away with using them out of the box I will paint them as I want a more dreary looking town to simulate Arkham etc. Whilst some hold together well just from clicking together some are a bit shaky so I will also probably end up gluing them and basing them. They also have gaps for windows - ie no glass - so will probably end up sticking plastic behind them.
Here some of them are fresh out of the box clicked together and put on the table to see how they fit:

Again most unpainted so will be worked on in the future just had to see what they looked like. Initial favourites the town hall, cathedral, bank, supermarket.
Where to get it all:
Plasticville Buildings:
Ebay is great for the older ones and Bachmann Trains (http://bachmanntrains.shptron.com/c/o-scale_plasticville-u-s-a_kits) have their recent stuff. I also have yet to arrive the hangar and airport terminal and country ranch and barn...
Streets, sidewalks, alleys:
I found my streets and sidewalks at "Mean Streets" here - http://www.thevirtualarmchairgeneral.com/610-Mean-Streets-Main-Page.html. Just print out PDFs and glue to card/foam boards. They also have some great buildings as well that could be a cheaper option than Plasticville - definetely worth looking at. I like their Chinatown series a lot! They also do "Mean Sets" interior sets which are pretty cool - opium den, the garage from St Valentines Day Massacre etc - get them here http://www.thevirtualarmchairgeneral.com/620-Mean-Sets.htm
Other Tall Building
The 3 story building is not Plasticville but rather another O scale manufacturer Rail King - there seems to be a number of variants of the same kit just with different colour schemes and names - this one was Exterminators - again found on ebay.
Monkeying around?
Yes that's a large ape on the building! After reading all the Kong threads here I had to track one down - found on Amazon - Silverback Gorilla by Safari stands around 6" high and 6" long so good solid size for 28mm - see the gangster figure on the rooftop for scale - am sure Kong will feature in a future island expedition and may end up back in town on the same building if he escapes captivity...
-
Nice, I really like how that's coming together! :-* :-*
When we finish up the terrain for Perilous Island, I sooooo want to start on a city set like this.
We've been looking at the Plasticville Airport Terminal and Hangar as well.
THANKS for sharing!
-
You're preaching to the choir, you've got a nice selection of plasticville there and some rare ones too. I especially like the factory. You just need a masked vigilante breaking through the skylights in the roof. Nice layout.
-
Thanks guys - I do have a masked vigilante figure that would work well - will post once painted :)
Again drawing further inspiration from this forum I've started on my own jungle.
Take some 5mm MDF board and cut out random shapes with jigsaw and sandpaper to smooth edges. Then take bunch of different aquarium plants - pull apart/cut shorter and mix up shapes and colours and then hot glue gun them to bases:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8237/8399698775_a3b530a2d3.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8399698775/)
IMG_0769 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8399698775/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
I decided to try and build some depth and height into the pieces so began each with a taller piece in the middle and then add additional pieces around the base - a few work in progress pieces:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8367/8400788004_dbc292b085.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8400788004/)
IMG_0764 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8400788004/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
Starts to look like a jungle when you have a bunch of them all together - with an Easter Island statue head (another aquarium find) and 6" high Kong for scale:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8049/8400787938_98873f0db7.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8400787938/)
IMG_0770 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8400787938/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
The plants typically are about 6cm high with centre pieces rising to approx 10cm.

Still need to add extra plants and sort bases out but thought I'd post the work in progress shots...
-
Nice jungle, purhased aquarium plants myself last weekend for the same purpose in mind.
And do I spot a McDonalds toy in the last pic? (I have two of those :D ).
-
Macca's toy? No the Easter island statue was from an aquarium shop and Kong was from amazon...
-
Ah, ok, thought you might have modded a Macca toy, got two seen in the photo, waiting (already quite a number of years, actually) to be made into terrain feature...
Yes, they even "talk". Need to cover those things either with green stuff etc or a wall structure.
-
Nick, great work on your new jungle. I really like how dense it feels! :-*
HAVE FUN!
-
You need cake deco palm trees! A pulp jungle must have palm trees!! ;)
I don't remember where I bought mine, but they come cheap.
You show a wonderfully high productivity, I must say! :)
-
Wow, when did the Easter Island guys appear at M?
-
You have some amazing projects... you sorely tempt me to get into some pulp action!
-
Wow, when did the Easter Island guys appear at M?
Must be years already...
Edit: seems to be in 2009:

lol those Easter Island heads from Maccas do look great and they really talk?! :)
Been a bit busy of late - have been working on expanding the jungle and also working on a river. This is the same method I used to create the earlier oasis so you can copy this technique and apply to that as well.
1. Cut and sand some 5mm MDF into windy river looking pieces and paint base colour using cheap sample pots from hardware. I am using 3 pieces cause that is the max length of the table we play on and will allow easier storage than one long one.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8107/8454772655_168d3f8524.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8454772655/)

2. Keep building up base coat and blend into darker middle section of river to give appearance of depth doesn't have to be exact at this stage
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8387/8454772609_5ab691479e.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8454772609/)
WP_20130203_003 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8454772609/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
3. Create outline where water's edge will be with hot glue gun (or PVA but have to due several layers to get a bit of height on it) and glue a few rocks down to allow river crossings. The rocks were hydrocal casted using Woodland Scenics molds - http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/TerrainFormation.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8511/8455866758_df2499ae79.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8455866758/)
WP_20130204_001 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8455866758/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
4. Spak filler the river edge/bank to the line of the glue created in 3.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8517/8455866774_2e6d7fb981.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8455866774/)
WP_20130204_004 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8455866774/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
5. Paint river edge brown - still needs work have to drybrush and add foliage etc later!
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8237/8455866776_ec8c019e4d.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8455866776/)
WP_20130204_013 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8455866776/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
6. Pour a thin layer of Woodland Scenics Realistic Water and let dry. I will eventually use 2 layers so that I can paint in between again to give illusion of depth and also water motion - photo of layer one drying so looks pretty basic.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8509/8454772745_4f7b6f432e.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8454772745/)
WP_20130204_014 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8454772745/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
7. Drip some over rocks to simulate wet surface - still wet here but eventually dries clear. Rocks again created from Woodland Scenics molds, hot glued down/together and painted following their paint tips.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8085/8455866646_f0620d1801.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8455866646/)

Will be adding Woodland Scenics Water Effects at base of rocks and attempting to create a waterfall effect down rock face - fingers crossed it might work but could go either way watch this space! :P
-
This looks really good already. Looking forward to seeing it finished.
-
Great post. Any chances to show the river done?
-
Hi guys work has got the better of me the last month or so - back on the case will post some snaps of river and other bits soon
-
Some more work in progress shots below:
Top view showing 3 pieces joined to reach full length of current gaming table :

You can also see some other works in progress scattered on the table
- mummies, dead king on throne and tomb scorpion for my original big Egyptian scenario I am still working on pulling components together for but getting there!
- new fighting monks league almost completed
- the spare plane I have (for those following earlier in the thread where I destroyed a plane to use as wreckage - proof the complete one still exists :P )
-random other 28mm minis and GW paints you can use to get an idea of scale - each river sect approx 40-50 cms long for just under 5ft total.
Shot of the waterfall piece with some "flowing" water now added:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7372/8715654839_a163bae20b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8715654839/)
WP_20130507_004 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8715654839/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
Reeds:
I've stuck some reed looking plants in along the bank - found at $2 decoration shop where they have plastic/fabric plants - these were originally on foot long grass blades (you can see some left in top pic) and I just chopped off the tips which had interesting lilly and berry looking tops. Drilled hole using pin vice drill/modelling tool into spakfiller side and dipped them in PVA and stuck in - easy! Scattered along bank and near river section ends for random effect.
Water effects:
- Waterfall:
Basically followed Woodland Scenics directions re waterfall creation - free vids on their website and youtube. If you don't have woodland scenics realistic water/water effects you can achieve the same thing with PVA - just blob on some baking/waxy paper and ripple into sections and let dry then glue and hang over waterfall. Brush with blue/white to achieve fast flowing effect.
- River:
I wanted to give the river a fast flowing look so players know they can't wade across unless they are at one of the the rocky fords/crossings. To do this I used some WS water effects to build up bottom of water fall and sections in front/following the rock crossing and painted white to simulate fast/torrent water. Initially I overkilled the white at crossings so paired it back and painted over with blue (you can see where - still needs another coat of blue to darken it) but think it looks better - less is more! Along the sections did the odd white streak as well to try and give the impression of fast flowing water - happy with it give it was only my for a first attempt.
The banks still need work - more foliage, drybrushing, sand etc but definitely playable as is..
Middle section with ford/crossing:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7301/8715654893_a4b3da2c28.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8715654893/)

End section with another crossing:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7327/8716774894_847f000034.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8716774894/)
WP_20130507_005 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpthulhu/8716774894/) by Pulpthulhu (http://www.flickr.com/people/pulpthulhu/), on Flickr
Think in future I might work on adding a few other new sections as well - to add some windy bits so can have the river snake across the table but happy with a straight one for now...
until next time :)
-
Looking good :-* The waterfall piece is a real eye-catcher.
-
Those plastic Easter Island heads came out for the movie "Night at the Museum" from MacDonalds. I picked up a couple back then. Kept one myself & passed one on to Bob Murch at Pulp Miniatures. Been trying to find more ever since.
-
Very interestung thread, lots of creative ideas ...!
:-*
-
Pulpthulhu, any chance of posting a close-up photo of your waterfall? I'm trying to do one and I like the look of yours, thanks.
-
Beautiful work! :-* Got to make some river sections when I find time.
-
Amazing job Pulpthulhu!
Consider your work to be shamelessly cloned (but know that you will always be on me heart ;) )
Just one thing: Did you really think that made any difference on dept perception to paint between the 2 layers of water fx?
keep´em coming brother!!!
-
Hi guys
Thanks for the kind words - work has taken over the past few months so productivity been a bit down more to follow in the next few weeks!
Feel free to shamelessly clone away no doubt your efforts will surpass my attempts! Please post action shots of your master pieces to inspire me to shameless clone off! :)
re Qs
* re depth perception and painting between layers of water fx
- I think it does add a bit in terms of both depth and flow - with the river sections I just did stripes of blue paint to simulate flowing water in between layers. In my desert oasis (see AAR 1 thread) I did a speckling type effect of blues and greens to give even more depth. For the river sections you could probably get away with just doing a good gradient painting of the underlying river base before you apply waterfx - lighter brown at edge tapering to dark blue/green in middle. Do both (my attempt anyways!) for added effect :)
* re close up of waterfall yes will get some up for you Mad Lord Snapcase.
