So, it has been a busy couple of days for me - between Christmas stuff, I have been diligently working on some new terrain boards to make it more interesting for the Mars games I play.
I started with some coroplast sheets for rigidity (it is the material used for cheap signage) with some sheets of polystyrene foam on top of them, and then added torn up sheets of cork that came from a project at work. I love getting leftovers from projects for free that would cost me mint to get any other way.
So, this is the test board, which worked fairly well. I used a combination of white glue and hot glue (be careful with hot glue, as it will melt the foam if you have it too hot - I was putting it on the cork, and letting it cool slightly before pressing it down.

I then sprayed it with primers - black and brown - and that melted the foam while coating the cork.

Then I mixed up white glue, paint, and gloss medium, and started painting the section, and then threw on some sand and rocks. I then started on the other two, so I can do a 48" x 72" table.

And poof! A new terrain board to put stuff on. I'll get my terrain on it next, and get ready for some gaming!

It was a lot easier to do than I expected, honestly. I was going to fill the canals in with realistic water, but I decided aaginst it. It is Mars, after all.

Well, oyur project is looking very good. Good idea of using cheap and available materials. I am developing ideas along the same lines. Enjoy doing this project.

That looks awesome. Did you use regular spray paint cans or a spray gun to paint the scenery?

How are your canals going to work in game? Will they count as difficult terrain?

Spray cans. You need the aerosols to dissolve the foam. Stinks to high heaven, though. Had to open the room up, and it got a bit cold.

As we play FUBAR for this, I was going to just call it light cover without making it difficult, though that is an idea.

And if you meant to melt the foam with the spray, then it is inspired too.
If not, then I guess that is just genius waiting to happen.

Excellent looking board; well done.
I agree that the cheap leftovers from work etc are always the best materials.
