Hello,
For a Pulp Campaign I'm looking for a map of the world as it was in 1931. Unfortunately, my Google-fu is not that strong, so I haven't been able to find it myself.
Who can help me find this? The higher the resolution the better, so that I can turn it into a nice prop for gaming as well :)
Many thanks!
Cheers
Jase
PS Happy New Year to you all!

Hi
If you can track down a Cthulhu Second ed box set there is a 1920s or 1930s map in that box set and its cool!

Thanks!
I'll try to get that Cthulhu set :)
The second map is a bit too small unfortunately to make out the countries properly, but thanks anyway :)

If you have an ebay search you might be able to pick one up?

There are several vendors on ebay selling prints of © free images from public libraries ( like the US congress one), if you are lucky maybe can find a big print for a better price than a collectible CoC box
edit to paste a couple of link from my bookmarks, not sure if this will help
an anymated world history map (you choose the year)

Or try Abe:
http://www.abebooks.co.uk/
Type in something like "school atlas" as your title and put in a year as a keyword.
Some of the 1930s ones are quite expensive, but there is a 1940 Webster for only £2.95 at the moment.
The bonus of using an atlas is that you get lots of maps.
Early school atlases are usually quite clear, and the 1950s Phillips ones usually include pictures and essays about trade etc.
You might also consider a book of timetables - I have a reprint of Bradshaw's railway timetables for Call of Cthulhu games. The 1920s ones include adverts for hotels etc, and steamship timetables.
If you are looking at a UK setting, Bradshaw's are invaluable. I noticed that "The Works" had a repro 1890s version last week. Not sure if there is something similar for other countries? Perhaps Baedeker?

Two old posts I made on LAF a few years ago might help.
The first talks about a roughly-1930 world map reproduction I found at our local art store: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=10159.0
The second has links to a wide variety of old map sources online: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=12661.0
One other resource that isn't in that older post is the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, which is a spectacular website full of neat maps. You can use a Google Maps-like interface to search geographically, and a timeline slider to limit your searchs by publication dates. http://rumsey.mapranksearch.com/

I have a world map produced by National Geographic Magazine hanging on my wall. It is in color and measures about 38" x 26". It is copyright 1932, National Geographic. I believe it was published with a NGM issue around that time. I think I purhased it online from an ephemera (sp?) dealer on eBay a few years ago. You might try searching for "1932 Worl Map National Geographic".
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies!
That site, AbeBooks, is really bad for my wallet :)
Found the 1932 world map, awesome!

A 28mm globe would be a cool thing, too!

Now, I have been spending money on old maps and atlases.
Thanks guys.

Good to hear :)
Any recommendations? I bought a McNally World Atlas from 1931, but plan on getting some others as well.

There was a thread a couple of days ago about 1920s maps - just a sec...
This any use to you? I think it's from 1920...

I have picked up a variety through eBay.
1928 Rand McNally World Atlas Commonwealth edition
It is intermediate in size (not quite 11x14 inches)
Very subdued in interior coloring of the maps, but has good detail.
1924 Atlas of the World and Gazetteer by Funk & Wagnalls
Hand-atlas size (not quite 7x10)
Some maps with good colour, but others not so hot.
Details are okay.
1931 Literary Digest Atlas of the World and Gazetteer
Purchased, but not yet received.
From pic on eBay, also a hand-atlas
1932 National Geographic Society World Map
December 1932 issue
Of course, it is good, it is NGS!
The level of detail could use improvent, but what world map does not.
I am in a quandary though: do I laminate it so I can roll it up for storage or do I dry mount it on masonite board and store it in a foamboard carton?
Opinions?
1932 National Geographic Society Antartic Regions Map
Seller of other NGS map threw this in.
Amazing at how little detail there is on it compared to 21st Century maps.
Those are what I have paid for already.
Targets:
I want a serious atlas from the '20s or early '30s.
You know - an ATLAS.
At very least, the size of my 1992 Britannica Platinum Edition one (not quite 12x16).
Preferably, the table-atlas size libraries have (16x20 minimum).
Yes, I want to make a disturbance when I plop it onto the table!
Granted, I will not ever plop that old of a book on any surface, but you all know what I mean.
Anyone know of where I could find one or two of those?
Two would be one ~1924 and another ~1934.
I also have my sights set on the NGS maps of the World, the Pacific, Asia and Africa released in 1922, 1932, 1934, 1935 and 1936 depending on the map.
Just have to have funds meet opportunity with these since I know where to locate those.
Yes, I am one of those "all in" sort of guys.

Yes Red Orc, I saw the other thread and did go to Hipkiss.
I just was not that impressed with what was available.
That was why I was off to eBay.
Still have to plump the depths of AbeBooks and Alibris yet.
Plus Red Orc, I am one of the older crowd - I like physical books and I love libraries.
One of these days, when I finally grow up {will 100yo be old enough? maybe I will settle for 75yo} and buy a house (buying such a raw deal so often though), I will finally able to have all of my books out and in cases.
My mother, in her weird sense of humor, had me count how many books I owned before leaving for college; numbered just under 2,000; that was three decades ago and I have been buying strong ever since.
As I acquire more maps and atlases folks, I will post my quick critiques here.
