Title: A foray into Muskets and Tomahawks
Post by: ducat on 06 January 2013, 10:25:30 AM
Well I have become all enthused about this game for the New year.

After a lot of reading around on various forums and blogs I took the plunge just before christmas and picked up the rule book.

I felt so good about it I have even gone and started one of those blogs to chart my progress.

you can see it HERE (http://warofthewoods.blogspot.co.uk/)

Not a huge amount of stuff there at the moment, but I am sure more things will be added soon.

Cheers, John.

Nice start I've been thinking about Front Rank Regulars but the pics are not that good as you say , my Rangers are Galloping major which are stunning and Ive some conquest and Northstar in different units but was waiting for the majors regulars but might get some front rank now , thanks

They do look good. I agree their photos are unflattering but I also find that with Galloping Major photos and Crusader.

The best photos (not necessarily minis) are Warlord and North star

Hi Gents,
I think you're right, the pictures on the online shop would be better represented by painted ones, maybe one day  ;)
I would recommend a look around the site for pics of painted stuff: The Studio and Gallery pages for instance.
Mulling over putting something out about planned releases for this year, including my first British Regulars  8)

Ducat - interesting blog - nice to see the "from the very start" approach, look forward to seeing more  :)

Thank you all for the nice comments so far. Glad some of you have found it useful already.

Out of interest Galloping Major, your figures did pique my interest, as they get a lot of glowing recommendations online.

It was due to the the way your figures mostly come in batch's of six that stopped me going with them for my starting force.

I found it hard to then look at adding a couple of Officer figures with out getting a large batch of extras, which I could not really justify to myself this early on.

Maybe you could think of adding Command packs, that cover a multiple line or something, like 3 regular officers, 2 ranger officers and 1 Indian officer for the British forces as an example. (I use the word Officer loosely, meaning Captain/sergeant/chief/leader etc etc).

Or just some single commander figures would work too  ;D

Just thought you may find it interesting to know and something to consider.

Cheers, John.

Agreed, I'm in the same boat!  I'm looking to fill some holes that aren't covered with your range Lance, but I can surely wait if I know what's coming!  Throw us a bone!  :)

My first game report is up. Proxy Canadians, Great Fun, and More Fun possibly hampered my reporting and photography skills for this one, but hopefully its not too bad a read through.

View it - HERE (http://warofthewoods.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/first-game.html)

A report on my second game is now available from here -

My Front rank French have arrived , hopefully some pics and reports will be added soon on those, but as with all things the snowy weather and some real life stuff has delayed my fun time a little.

Cheers, John.

I like what you are doing, and the from the beginning approach,

I am currently using Studio Tomahawk figures, and I have some Crusader Brits plus some conquest Indians and French through Warlord, but they are quite slight compared to Tomahawk figures.

I am looking forwardtoseeing how you develop it

I thought they only made rules, do they have figures as well? Who sells the book and figures?

They do only make rules

I think he is referring to the "Official" North Star range for M&T

I have added a brief "overview/review" of the "Muskets and Tomahawks" system to my blog - http://warofthewoods.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/musket-and-tomahawks-review.html (http://warofthewoods.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/musket-and-tomahawks-review.html)

Hopefully some may find it interesting.

As my lot say no paint....no play...

I try to follow that adage myself, but sometimes it is better to play.

Since this time last year, I have painted some 260+ saga figures (a shocking amount when you actually start counting them up....), a critical mass army, and about 30 wargods figs. That is the stuff that just comes to my memory, god knows what I have forgotten about.

The FIW stuff is being played as I paint, but it is starting to slowly come together. It is always slow for me this time of year though, as the Garage is blooming freezing, and the light inside is useless where (and when) I can get to paint in the house.

As a bright spot on the previous post though, My friend is going to paint a few of the figs up for me (as he will mostly be using them  ;D ).

He is starting with the French "Indian" contingent, so with luck he may have one done by our next meet. Blooming good painter, but slow due to time available, but I won't be complaining. He is going to try for one a week.

The first of my units is done. Be warned though my batterys went flat and I only managed one photo, which was not one of my best. A little photoshop enhancement at least made it presentable for now.

So to see how not to photograph miniatures to their best, follow the link....

Hopefully I will update that page over the weekend with some much better pictures.
