My mate is building a barbarian army (his inspiration is the Prof  )
Now I dont mind doing a force to fight them but was trying hard to think of something diffeent which would not cost the earth either.
I cant seem to get the Old glory site to show any pictures no matter what.
I have scouted the Frothers showcases but nothing catches my eye, scanned BTD fantasy ranges but nothing appeals.
I fancy something a bit fun not GW or heavy Fantasy I quite like the Ral Partha Mesoamerican Orcs.
Any suggestions gents

AH-HA! Someone else has the same problem with the Old Glory website as me! It's been driving me insane for months. Do you get the "Overlapped I/O operation is in progress" error message when you try to load any picture?
Anyway, how about Celtos Sidhe or Fomorians as opponents against barbarians? They have a barbaric quality about them too.
-
I quite like the 5th edition GW savage orcs as opponents for Barbarians, their primitive caveman look fits the bill.
Otherwise, something alltogether different like fantasy arabs. You could mix historical moors and muslims with fantasy 1001 nights type figures (genies, flying carpets, etc...).
Or something more oriental like mongols and throw in some oriental fantasy figures.

Now that is a possiblity I have a WAB Mongol army and am painting a WAB Moorish army.
I would still like something a bit different. I will check out the orcessses

Yep for me the site is broken. I have to say I have used it for years to check minis out as the UK site has next to no pics on it.

What army depends on the flavor you want them to have. In the world of Tauren (still a work in progress)...
... the barbarian clans live in the areas of Njorden and and north Sundland. To the south is Ibyssia. I am basing the world on a Fall of Rome/Dark Ages period. Ibyssia happens to be the falling empire so it's troops have a bit of a late Roman feel to them. To the west is Guhl and the troops there appear more Norman in nature.
There are other places not yet on the map with a Sassanid type people and then south of Ghul a Bedouin type people. To the east will be many more.
So depending on your preference, you could develop any sort of army to face off against the barbarians. If you prefer historical periods, build a Roman army and add in some more fantastic elements (if the barbarians have mammoths, then give your Roman-style Indian/African elephants).

What the hell did you do, Rich? :o :o Why did you keep Scandinavia (almost) as-is but nothing else?
-
You need some effete civilised types that would, by dint of their cleanliness and ability to read, drive the neighbouring barbarians into paroxysms od shield-biting fury.
How about some Empire of the Petal Throne figures from Eureka?
Or, some fantasy Chinese from Black hat and MSB?
Or, a Covenent of Magi and their summoned minions (magic ALWAYS annoys barbarians)?
Or pacifist orcs? (sneak peak: http://www.matakishi.com/pinkorcs.htm )
Or... something else...

Love those Orcs Paul
Hmmm Transvestite figures

I don't seem to have any problems with their pictures, what did you want to see, I'll post them for you.
How about aliens as opponents, I'm thinking of the first scene in the X-files move with the cavemen hunting an alien.

Why did you keep Scandinavia (almost) as-is but nothing else?
I needed a starting point and my Jonsson blood overpowered the Bauer and Foley blood for a change. :D
Or pacifist orcs?
Who the hell did the choreography for that video! That was awesome.

I hope your "High Priest of Mök" doesn't try any missionary work in Njorden, or he'll get a lot of snickers :)
I also like how "Auburgh" (which I presume is meant to be Turku/Åbo) is one of the cities on that map. I have lots of ancestral ties with Åbo, and I know the city well.

Good idea! And I just happen to have some Romans and Roman dwarves to offer in the Bazar of obscurities...

You need an island in the middle of that sea, full of pirating galleys - Melithe.

All done by Tom :)

No-no-no :o That's my idea :x I'm going to make that one day

Sorry, but I already made a start on it 3-4 years ago, though haven't worked on them recently. Have almost all the models and painted some of them.
Mostly Gripping Beast and Artizan Moors, some Musketeer muslims, Black Tree Saracens (including flying carpets), Reaper arabian fantasy figures, Chronopia desert orcs, genies, various fantasy characters... :)
-
I'm painting those Black Tree fantasy Saracens right now. But then again, I'm going to use them as Zamorians from the world of Conan, so they're not meant to be entirely Arabian, just sort of pseudo-Arabian with gypsy influences. Moreover, I'll probably use some of my old Artizan and Gripping Beast Andalusians as Khaurans, Brigade's Sons and Daughters of the Desert as eastern Shemites, and Eureka Turkish Pirates as Turanians. I also need to fit the Khamsin miniatures from Reaper's Warlord range in there somewhere as well, maybe as Iranistani.
-
I was only joking :) I'm far away from making anything for that project, I've bought lots of figs two years ago (after finishing of Norsemen force) but never started with it. Let see your painted arabian stuff, really look forward to it!
Otherwise some of stuff would make nice parts of possible Conan adventures. Waiting for "Broadsword Adventures"...

There are a lot of BTD Saracens on ebay going cheap at the moment but with a painting a Fatimid army at the moment dont think it is yet for me.
Dont worry gents I will come up with something and thanks for all the good suggestions. My problem is I have a lot of historical armies which most people have suggested so I need to have a good surf.
Isnt this waht makes the hobby fun :D
-
something worth looking at is the Baueda Trogs. I goubht some of these a year or so ago, might fit with other primitive orcs? I passed mine on to my mate ...d`oh :D
They dont seem to have progressed the range, which is sad
http://www.esair.baueda.com/shoptrog.html
-
You could always make a kobold or halfling army. I couldn't imagine what would be more annoying to a barbarian army than having to bend over to swat their opponents. ;) I've been thinking about doing a kobold army for "Song of Blades" myself, I know Reaper has some.
The Orc video is genius Matakishi.

Only got about 60 of them painted before I caught the pulp/weird war2 vibe. Mostly rank and file, some characters. :)
Will have to see about pictures, though there are a few blurry ones with some of the figures here:

Regarding the topic of the thread, I think since Barbarians are the most "pulp" fantasy army, you should go with somehting lilke the civilisations found in the Conan and Tarzan stories.
How about Amazones? Shadowforge and Maidenhead make several "all-female" armies you could use.
-
Thanks White Knight a good Idea. I am thinking of an ape/monkey army actually with plenty of Wingged fez monkeys with possible some of the 100 kingdoms apes as leaders etc. Then throw in some big apes.
This way with the addition of my apes with gus it can morph across pulp, sci fi and fantasy :D
-
Or maybe not...hmmm I think I will just sit and wait to see if something inspires me. Sorry about putting everyone through my mental toerment with fantasy figures. I think this must be the reason why I stopped gaming it some time ago :freak:
-

Yes,that was my other thought (with the tarzan influence).
I also made a start a few yaers ago on collecting and converting a monkey army with winged fezzed monkeys and other apes. Even scratchbuilt a banana-peel shooting machine gun, with 3 converted fezzed crew: one firing, one loading and one eating banana's as fast as he can to supply the ammo. Also got fezzed monkeys riding 100K baboons for some cavalry and a general in Napoleon hat and pose. For the latter, see here: http://wk.frothersunite.com/conv/monkey1.htm
If you want some big guys, the Schleich gorilla is *exactly* the same size and culpting style as the 100k Gor.

Thats some good ideas White Knight, I pop over to Frothers quite and bit and generally look at the forum, Marbles miniature showcases and trawl the links, missed these gems somehow :)

While I generally love Artizan crisp sculpting, I must say the Gripping Beast Moors are great and the veils and robes paint up very well.

I am painting up a Fatimid army at the moment and they all mix in very well. Make sure to check out the Musketeer arabs they have some beautiful figures in their ranges which fit in very vell with both of the above

I have some of Musketeer minis arabs that I purchased at Crisis! Very nice figures and they just hold the middle between Artizan and GB in style, thus fitting with both.
The thing between Artizan and GB is that the way the folds in the robes and the veils are sculpted is very different, which makes them not work in the same unit for me.

with my painting you couldnt tell :D I know what you mean artizan are more angualr whilst the folds are softer on the GB ones. One or two slighlty odd poses with artizan too. Try ranking 4 on a 40mm by 40mm base and you soon find out
-
with my painting you couldnt tell :D
With mine you can and that's not because it's so great either.
I still have a good deal of Artizan minis in the lot, but have sold off the surplus to Driscoles.

I would beg to differ yours look great. I use a mix of layering and dry/wet brushing with some highlights and GB figures tend to be more forgiving in this

So do I, but I also used a wash on them and then touched up the highlights. I'm not a great, fast or patient painter. :)
-
I know what you mean about the Artizan moors being less forgiving because of their sculpting style. The crisp, angular look of their clothes are nice in a way, but it made it very hard for me to know where to paint shading. There aren't many deep recesses on their long tunic-like garments (whatever those are called - I used to think they were "haiks" but turns out that's another kind of northwest African garment).
-
I think you are right not a lot of folds to play around with.
The names seem to change by locality
Abaya Rectangular cloak without set-in sleeves.
Abba Overcoat of straight cut with elbow-length sleeves.
Gambaz Ankle-length gown worn by both men and women.
Jubbe Loose straight Bedouin jacket of dark wool.
Kaffia Head scarf.
Kaftan Coat.
Kamis Shirt.
Kubran Ornamental bolero jacket or vest.
Sherwal Full trousers.
Zunnar Wide belt of bias folded cloth.

My barbarian army is loosely based on ancient germans to early vikings with some mythology inspired characters.
The armies they should face (when I'm a pensioner and find time and people to actually play with my armies-) are:
-Beastmen, of the barbaric kind (GW, L&L, Crocodile games, and a unit of various Kevin Adams figs)
-Realistic orcs: Grenadier Half-Orcs, BTD LotR orcs, need to add Rebel Minis 15mm orcs as goblins, and just saw some Hasslefree WIP that are pretty great.
-Picts: a mix of barbarians and cavemen and chronopia firstblood viridians (remind me of Slaìne)
-Sidhe: Celtic Elves. Hardcore, unpredictable and mercyless assault elves, not the daisy-sniffers.
I'd like to add:
-BTD roman dwarfs with roman gorillas.
-late eighties Citadel Perry savage orcs, the ones with the sickles. Brilliant style and not too cartoonish. I only got two figs and they're actually pretty small: 28mm à la Foundry but with oversized heads and weapons.
-Apparently HLBSC has good Cro Magnon cavemen in furs.
-Baboons.
