Gothic Horror on the small screen?
http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-01-14/sam-mendes-and-skyfall-writer-john-logan-to-bring-frankenstein-and-dracula-to-life-in-new-tv-series
"psychosexual" too!
-
It sounds interesting, but it worries me when its described as "Psychosexual Horror" ???
-
Yes, and it seems it will have all the "villians" from Victorian London, perhaps a WWF Battle Royal type programme. Though with call the midwife writer and Mendes it should be a rather interesting mix....

Noooo, not one of these Ultimate Warrior type programmes inflicted on us.... Here is Jack the Ripper and Spring-Heeled Jack: Who would win in combat? :o
Isn't there enough reality crap on the telly? >:(

As for psycho-sexual, how can Dracula not be psycho-sexual? :-X

I'd have thought that would have been the easiest with Dorian Grey, all that sucking and sexual domination!
-
The psychosexual bit instantly made me think of American Horror Story, which I love. Quite intrigued by this prospect!
-
If you have Showtime in the states the first episode is on-demand & It's pretty good. As I posted on the VSF thread it's like EOTD as a TV show. Looking forward to seeing it's progression.

Ever read the book? Like so many characters and stories of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, it's actually pretty tame. He isn't immortal at all, he just doesn't show the signs of his endless vice and age on his face. People do wonder at how he looks so young, but he dies in middle age by slashing his own portrait and suffering the wounds himself.
PS. Victor Hugo's 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' is even earlier and was so hard to get through (it is pages and pages of architectural details more than anything else) I gave up.

Have seen the first episode and its is excellent. Looking forward to Sunday when it starts

I enjoyed it. A lot of promise and potential.

*******************Minor Spoiler************************
Not a huge deal or anything but was anyone else let down by the look of a certain doctors creation? I think they could have done a little better with that.
-
I just watched the first 18 or so minutes (up to after dealing with the vampire lair!), and it looks really what we want for Gothic Horror mini games, or at least some ideas for them.
For those that do not have Showtime in the States, go to the following link and watch the first 1-hour episode in full (guess Showtime is doing this to hook people to get new subscribers!), at the following link; click on "Watch First Episode".

Otherwise, I can't wait to see this on Sunday. 8)

Wow :o :o :o
Saw the first episode yesterday, and it did not disappoint. The casting, the story, the setting everything clicked.
This what I have hoped would be made for years.
-
Impressive cast and the setting looks well done indeed. Very EOTD as was mentioned before.

I think they want it to be normal sized. Could of done with being more scarred perhaps I must agree

They had me at Eva Green. o_o

Its like xfiles meets extorinary leauge of gents.....

Who's showing this in the UK? Ta.
-
Just watched it on X-box live with the Girl friend. Found it in the Movie and television show section. It asks you to purchase the first episode but the price is still free.
-

Sky Atlantic mate.
-
Aha. Thanks :)
-
A lot better than I was expecting. Loved the monster waking scene.
-
Episode 2 was just as good! Some more interesting characters introduced!
-
Grrr. I don't have SKY and the link to the first episode doesn't open for the UK >:(

Yup, very annoying. I was very keen to watch this. Guess I will have to wait for the DVD. :'(

Agreed 100% I was very pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Im definitely on board for the first few episodes at the very least.
-
No doubt it'll be on Netflix by 2021.
-
I have seen two episodes and they are quite good. Eva green and Timothy Dalton are particularly well cast.
My God, one feels like one is positively *bathing* in good drama at the moment....
-
Guess I will have to borrow the DVD.
Changed that for you ;D
cheers

lol
I'll wait for you to get it then ;D

Wow, I'm surprised the good press it's getting on here as it did pick up some criticism for levering in all famous gothic horror characters into one show.
I hasten to add, that's not MY view, I really enjoyed it and I'm looking to see how it pans out :-)

Certainly was MY view, but the first episode won me over. Not my perfect show, mind you, but quite enjoyable, and clash of monsters had enough differences, vampires almost don't deserve a capital V, made it all exotic. I really think the hints on Eva Green's character secrets can only please me if they're all red herrings, mind you. :D
Still, I shall cringe until the show from episode two on is on a venue I can access.

Thought the first episode was great! Loads of potential! The last line of the episode could have been predicted from the moment the character appeared on the screen - but I still cheered when he said it! :D
-
Watched it last night, it seems promising however was slow in developing, I owuld ahve liked a bit more background to the characters etc but can see that coming over the next few episodes. Will continue watching but just didnt twig for me.
I also noted that the trend for lots of shaggins seems to be the order of the day lol ;D as with Game of Thrones and Vikings :D
-
Anybody else also think that Josh Hartnet's character may actually be ' Jack'?
LOTs of speculation at the time that he was part of a wild west show or an 'Outdoors American'?
I also thought that his shooting skills were somewhat 'over egged' in the first episode and at no point did he have a knife.... Misdirection?
-
Watched first episode last night - very very good. Not sure if the episodes across the water are ahead of us here in the UK so remember to keep it spoiler-free....... anyway in episode 8...... ;D

Just you you blithering loon. He's clearly an (victoria) american werewolf in Londinium.
-
The first two epsisodes were great - lots of character and a story that was driving the characters.
In episode 3 and 4 I have found myself thinking why am I watching this. The story moves forward so slowly and for me the character of Dorian Grey is just fillings. The scenes that move the story forward takes around 5 or so minutes per episode.
I will still continue to watch, but Ripper Street IMO is a better show.

Are we more impressed yet? :)

Oh, and the two are automatically mutually exclusive?
I'll see you next wednesday.... lol

Yeah, new guys a little better ;).

My wife keeps saying the same thing, unless they have a really good back story I hope not. I'm not sure exactly why it just seems lazy to me. Dorian Gray is getting a bit tiresome (show up, be cryptic, hump, repeat) I would really like to see where his loyalties lie.
-
Eva Green. 'Nuff said ;D

I'm sold. :-*

Ok, is it me, or every time that Billie Piper's character opens her mouth you just cringe at the awful, and I mean AWFUL attempt at an Irish accent? Why make her speak with an accent, or if she is that awful why not just get a real Irish actress? (ok, she has more of a namesake, but still).
Ok, rant over. :)
-
To be fair it's not that bad, i'm Irish and I have heard other Irish people that sound like that, our accents often can sound like that, they run the gamut (when i've had a drink in me mine can sound pretty stereotypical/incomprehensible, a cliché I know), in Pipers case she's over egging it.
I like the show but I can't stand Dorian Grey or Eva Green for that matter.
-
No I have trouble listening and I like Billie. I like the Egyptian vampire tie in but the show is creeping along like a snail on the edge of a razor, painfully slow.
-
All in all, I enjoyed the first season. It wasn't absolutely brilliant, but it had its moments and its twists.
I think it succeeded in paying homage to the penny dreadful genre and has perhaps contributed some nice fodder for GH gaming.
-
Hoping for a strong second season. The first ended well enough I suppose but there were a lot of unanswered questions, hopefully that means they're writing for the long game.
-
I was pleasantly surprised with the ending, didn't see it coming at all
-
Still need to watch the last two episodes. The thing that tempered our enthusiasm a bit was the fact that it seems to be all about setting moods and creating atmosphere while the story hardly moves at all. Of course, one might say this is faithful to the original victorian horror stories too.
-
With SO many things left un-resolved, and as someone else pointed out, how slow the narrative is, you do wonder quite how many series the writer has planned! Could be 4 seasons + at this rate...

The whole series has felt like an introductory feature length episode, in that we have really only just got to know the characters. I have enjoyed it though.
-
Really enjoyed the show despite its sometimes glacial pace.
Without giving the ending away, in case someone has yet to see it, the last one minute made me think, "And now we have everybody aboard!"
Looking forward to next season.
-
I quite enjoy a nice big book if the story is well told and the setting is enjoyable.
So a TV show with slow pacing really is no problem as long as the production company actually has a story-arc and whoever controls the purse-strings gives the thing a fair chance to see the story told.
If it's well done, I don't mind waiting around until next year to see more of the story.
-
I know I'm a bit late with this especially now the first seasons ended. But I really really need to build the tavern where Billy Pipper and the werewolf shacked up. I don't know why but the outside shot of the tavern even though it's CGI just screams build me.
Thought the bit we're the monster shacks up with Frankenstein was a little bit funny even though they want to kill each other.
P.S. The only bit that grabbed my attention from the online reviews was Psychosexual, can't remember what else it said or is it just me.

You mean the new ad man term for there's a lot of shacking up?
