In my never-ending quest to find the most efficient way to build the best looking table possible with the most amount of portability, I have been experimenting with 1' x 1' tiles.
At the link below, I outline what I have done to eliminate the problem of the tiles being knocked around by building a frame.

one suggestion:
the bolts are secured with what look like 1/2" hex nuts. what about using wing nuts? then no need to carry along a tool to fasten/unfasten: unless someone chops off a hand, you have the needed tools. if someone does lob off a hand, you've a back-up. if they chop off both, you've other concerns my friend! 8)

Wing nuts would definitely be possible. I didn't go with them , again, for the "clothing-snagging" reason. I have found that players sleeves cause more damage than their hands sometimes.
