Title: 'Aliens' based skirmish set up
Post by: Notts Gamer on 06 February 2013, 08:24:00 AM
Hi,

I am thinking about building up some forces for an 'Aliens' type skirmish game - come to think about it, I have been scheming about this since the mid 80's)

Unfortunately (though my chosen scale) 28mm is out - Woodbine do some nice Marines but there is very little in affordable Aliens (I have thought about converting Heroclix/Horrorclix but these are at a premium).

Has anyone any views on Ground Zero Games humans & aliens or the Pendraken versions (or any other suggestions)?

Thanks

I think Grenadier future troopers (Copplestone) are te best you can find for this (doing marines)

http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/TROOPERS.html

concerning the Aliens, I have personaly used the Kryomek Helions (https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT35DRpz4KphP1ZyLvmd2OzEa-x8ZoNYVBnfG9Ok_SFqjfvnsgx) from Scotia grendel  mixed with OOP citadel hormagaunts (http://www.thiel-a-vision.com/images/games/hormagaunts.jpg) and some OOP Void Koralons because I wanted Aliens "without weapons"

all were painted in shiny black and a lot of drool made with glue

and there a clever idea of Kryomek conversion

sorry if my english is not absolutely correct :(

Why not convert some GW Genestealers?

I did that back in the early nineties with a couple from the Space Crusade game and they worked out pretty well.

Just cut off the clawed set of arms, add a whippy tail and convert the head by elongating it and covering over the eyes. I also went the extra mile and split the existing tongues horizontally to create the 'second set of jaws', which looked remarkably good.

I don't know about the current genestealers though; the sculpting has evolved a bit in the almost 20 years since then... ::)

Go 15mm - you can grab marines and aliens from Khurasan or QRF in this scale. My preference would be the Khurasan range, but YMMV.

They do a very nice APC too. ;)

QRF: http://quickreactionforce.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=440_544_545&zenid=93eebbfa1d080ea5948a42d63791aa14

EDIT: beaten to it by Earther!!!

In 15mm you could not do better not-Aliens than the space demons from Khurasan.

You may even find suitable not-marines there too, although the GZG human figs are great and mix very well with the Khurasan.

In 28mm, Hasslefree is releasing quite interesting minis you could use for this. Specially this one, which is obviously sculpted with 'Aliens' in mind:

Have a look at their range.

I managed something with GW Imperial Guards

Cutting and mixing lasguns and bolters.
Don't know if this helps.

Dawn of the Lead blog entries on the subject might offer some pointers:

I've just started my aliens project. I've used Denizen 25mm and I'm going to order some EM4  stuff too. For the xenos I've got some plastic stealers and hormogaunts and U've ordered some Chapterhouse spare heads. I have Heresy lurker heads too. For colonists I've got Heresy officials and ship crew, Denizen crew and EM4 planned for rebels.

I also just ordered the Old Crow dropship and have my eye on the Scotia Grendel APC.

Plenty of threads and options  out there bud so good luck.

Personally I went with em4 marines, smart guns, horroclix aliens, queen, eggs and predators,  heresy hurns and scratch built huggers.  Dropship kit from halcoyn and will get an spc from khurashan. One day soon ill go back and finish it.

As I say go explore. Also check out eBay for the older metal hormagaunts as they wou like d make perfect aliens once the extra limbs were removed.

Good luck.

Notts Gamer,

I've got GW Termagaunts for sale that have been painted to look like the Aliens in the movies, along with Pig Iron System troopers to hunt them. Take a look at my ad in the Bazaar, there is a link to photos.  The ad is "selling several collections of figures - Price Changes".

Old Hormagaunts with Genestealers would have worked nicely.  The Hormagaunts had long Aliens-esque heads.
