Title: Bac Ninh Miniatures: Boshin War sculpted by Paul Hicks
Post by: rokurota on 07 February 2013, 08:57:28 PM
It’s a pleasure to let you know about my new adventure, the creation of Bac Ninh Miniatures.
I’ve always thought that it would be great to have a little brand of miniatures and after thinking over it for a long time I decided to take this big step.
As a passionate of Japanese history, it was very clear to me in what historical period/conflict the Bac Ninh Miniatures are focused.

Japan 19th century, the last years of Tokuwaga Shogunate, also known as Bakumastsu and specifically during the Boshin War (1867-68),
a conflict that faced Shogun’s troops with the Emperator’s troops.
The fall of the Shogun’s troops and their followers lead into a new era in Japan, the Meiji restoration.

My intention is not other than showing you the fascinating period of the history of Japan and being able to reproduce
this into a tabletop or simply being able to add to your collection a few miniatures magnificently sculpted of this specific period.
Currently there are no miniatures of this conflict of the Japanese history,
which means that Bac Ninh Miniatures will be the first one offering these kinds of miniatures.

The great Paul Hicks has been the elected one to create these sculptures and as you can see his work has been amazing, as always!

It’s a risky bet given that it is a very little known conflict and I can’t know if it will be accepted,
this means that its success and continuity of this range of miniatures depends mostly on the interested people.

This is the first pack that will come out and it will be available in a couple of weeks approximately.
As you can see it consists of four miniatures, two officers and two NCOs.
The officer and the NCO with the “great wigs” are specific for the Emperor’s troops, concretely of the Tosa, Choshu and Satsuma Clan.
The other ones can be used for both sides.

Following this pack, other ones will be released containing basic troops, and more things that I have on my mind,
but as I said before, the continuity of this range depends mostly from you.

In this blog; http://bacninhminiatures.blogspot.com.es/ (http://bacninhminiatures.blogspot.com.es/) you will be duly informed about all the news of Bac Ninh Miniatures,
where I also will be publishing some topics related to this conflict (uniformology, articles of painting and history, etc.)

Best of luck with the venture  8)

I'll certainly be buying as I won't have to do them myself now (I've had the initial figure for an Edo period range started). If you need any info on uniforms etc just let me know  :)

A cracking period to do  :-*

(following you as well)

cheers

James

Some cracking sculpts on your hands there!
 :-* :-* :-*

I know nothing about the period but will say that I NEED some of these to use as Henchman for an evil super-villain Pulp-style!
(Well Strange Aeons style, but pretty much the same thing...)

Plaudits for doing something so different, all the best with the venture. As Mason says you could well get some assistance from the Pulp brigade.

These will also be great for a Japanese VSF faction. Exciled Shogunate on Mars or Venus perhaps.

Hey!

This is cool, I will certainly buy some. Will it stretch into the Satsuma Rebellion/Last of the Samurai period as well?

Would these work for Gilbert and Sullivan themed games?

Is there any figures released by any company in the last two years that has not been sculpted my Mr Hicks? Not a critisism- as I buy as many of his sculpts as I can afford!  lol

I like these- not my period but very interesting anyway- is this the same period that the Tom Cruise film 'Last Samurai' is set?

Sure!

Sorry, I don't know Gilbert and Sullivan themed games.

More or less, The last samurai is a mix of the Boshin War and Satsuma Rebellion.

Obscure for sure, but I think Wargames Illustrated recently ran a series of articles on 19thC Japan, which included one on the Boshin War - so you never know.

An other range started with Hicks Sculpts that finished after 10 packs, I'm afraid. Maybe I'm too pessimistic

Well I would be happy with whatever is made, to be honest, as I will not be looking for an army just a few packs of characterful figures for use in Pulp and VSF.

Could be the start of a new EotD faction, the period is about right.  :)

Now that's an interesting idea, set it in Japan and I think you're onto a little niche winner.

I'll be getting them for their intended purpose though  ;D lol

Would you care to elaborate? I'm rather new to the whole thing (besides some ACW modelling and gaming for the better part of twenty years  ;D). I know Mr Hicks works for a lot of companies/people but most seem to get added every now and then.

I have the masters, I'm really glad with how they have turned out.
I think that they will be ready in a week more or less, once the production mould has been made.
