Title: Advice for a roleplay project
Post by: gmanrocks on February 16, 2013, 08:51:15 PM
Hi everyone

Me and my friends play a lot of fantasy RPG games were we use a battle map. We've been mostly using tokens but we're looking at getting a pile of cheap miniatures to use. I've been able to find some decent second games in charity shops such as a copy of Heroquest (it wasn't complete but for £3 it was great for grabbing some cheap minis). I've also got a few old Warhammer minis from back in the days when a regiment box was just a single piece plastic mini all in the same pose.

Do you folks know any ranges of cheap plastic, preferably one piece (so they can be swiftly painted and then dumped in a box to be carried around without worry of them snapping) fantasy 28mm-ish minis? I've seen EM4 stock plenty of Orcs and Dwarves and a company called Castle Craft seem to do sets such as Knights vs Vikings, although i can't comment on the quality of either.

Thanks

I'm a fan of Mantic stuff, though you'll not find anything cheaper than EM4. There's a link of the Em4 website with someone who's converted full units out of their stuff, if you want to see what it can look like.

BONES, from Reaper!
The range is getting wider and wider constantly, the material is tough, and they're cheap as free.

There are several resellers of prepaints on line. Like Troll & Toad, or Strikezone, or Popular Collections, and many others. Look for D&D, Heroscape etc.

If you wait unitl after march I imagine eBay will be flooded with Bones figures. :).

I know there are some I don't need and they are ALL one part.

I have to admit, I'd completely forgotten about the Bones range. When I saw they were doing it I didn't think it'd be much of a price drop, but looking at the prices and quality on their website, I'm pretty stunned. They're fantastic! I'll certainly keep my eyes on them, they may even turn out cheaper than getting joblots on eBay. Thanks

My friend told me theres a charity shop selling a Dungeons and Dragons board game, i think its the game made by Parker, cheap and incomplete but with a bunch of miniatures included. Which may be a good source of cheap minis.

Just out of morbid curiosity, has anyone got this, and know what scale the minis are? I've been searching around for comparison shots, but haven't been able to find any.

As I only have enough time to paint minis for the player characters, for the D&D games I run using the Savage Worlds Rules, I use the prepainted D&D minis for my monsters. They are cheap, I spend no more than 1$ each on them on Ebay and I just toss them all into a box when the game is over.

Good luck.

A hero, some monsters a Foundry swashbuckler and a Heroquest orc with a  5 mm squared backdrop. Click through for full res pic.

I'd say more: Why don't you search around (the bazaar here, bartertown, fu uk,...) for someone who wants to give up for the REAPER BONES KICKSTARTER VAMPIRE PLEDGE?
I mean, it's 100$ ish, and there are 240 miniatures. A deal, but i'm shure that some of the 17744 backers after 5 months changed his mind.

Just my two cents.
(do it! ;) )

Cool, they're much bigger than i thought, they look like soft plastic, but might paint up ok.

As much as I'd like to, I don't really have that lump sum of cash, this is just going to be one of those things I'll pick up in pieces along the way.
