Title: Help! Solo player looking to get into this game
Post by: skawitch on 18 February 2013, 09:12:55 PM
Hi folks!

I'm needing some advice: How well does this game play solo?

I'm not even a newbie yet, as I don't own SA - I've been reading a bit about the game and am thinking about getting it. I'm a big Lovecraft fan & also I love HPL themed games - I love the solo games especially Arkham Horror, the Mythos CCG, Elder Sign. Occasionally I get to play the Call of Cthulhu CCG with my girlfriend and have Mansions of Madness waiting in the wings.

I'm contemplating buying this game as I want something with a bit more of a story arch than Arkham Horror yet plays well solo. I'm reluctant to spend money without a decent idea of what it's like (shame there are no videos available online!). So basically, I know people on an SA forum are going to be a little bias but can anyone advise me on how well this plays solo?

Cheers!

Mark

As far as I know there are no official SA solo rules but maybe someone here has rouse-ruled some. I seem to remember this topic has been talked about before in here.

Anyway, I think that the game lends itself well to solo gaming if youtake the time and effort to develop a set of sophisticated AI rules mixed with some random movement and force composition tables. Scenarios could also be altered to allow for more exploration-style gaming with random events happening here and there and the enemy force only being revealed piecemeal.

There's solo rules in Morbid, but it's not much other than "grab 2 different colored dice to tell rolls apart".

I did have a home made set of solo rules I mentioned on LAF years ago, plus I had it typed up on a web site somewhere... I just can't find the link to it  :?

I will dig around to see what I can find.

Edit: two references on LAF:

Still looking for my web site that I had all my notes on which I seem to have lost.

Morbid Adventures has guidelines for solo games, which works pretty good. I've done a few games in the past.

I'm mostly a solo player and my preferred source for soolo rules is TwoHourWargames rule sets, they make ATZ, Nuts, 5150, etc. You can get their basic rules for free at;
http://www.twohourwargames.com/chainreaction3.html (http://www.twohourwargames.com/chainreaction3.html)
and use SA to generate your scenarios.

Best of Luck with this.

Thanks for the help all! I like the idea of the card based system.

Amalric: thanks for the tip, will look into that also. The idea off using a system with a strong solo focus and using SA is a good one.
