UPDATE - I've changed the name of thread since they finally did their KS
I'm surprised no one posted this. Just saw it on TMP!:
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=296357
I ran into David yesterday and he told me about the plastics project, which is moving ahead. His big problem all along was production: having a full time job, needing about five minutes per vehicle for production, and only having 700 square feet of shop/storage space, which made everything very difficult. As he said, with plastic, five minutes of production is 100 kits! They also have box manufacturing lined up in China; plastics will most likely be done domestically.
Most importantly, David has a project manager for the whole thing, including the Kickstarter campaign, to make sure that everything makes financial sense and that the higher-level KS "rewards" don't break the bank. You may be familiar with KSes that weren't thought out correctly and the people behind them couldn't meet their obligations, particularly with the "free gifts."
Anyhow, David figures that he can do all of the shipping without a big problem; he's working out warehousing. Being able to concentrate on design and getting the kits out the door will be a lot easier than doing all of the resin production himself.
And for those who don't know the old resin vehicles, here's some pictures:

I have a Bengal tank I've been saving... great vehicle. I sold two Komodo APC on eBay many years ago... big mistake.

I spent several years delaying buying them and when I finally could afford them, he stopped making them and vanished :? I just hope that doesn't happen this time.

Same here. price + postage was too high for my wallet back then and before I knew it they were gone :'(

These vehicles would mesh well with 28mm Tomorrow's War scenarios too. If he does go through with this, I will certainly spread the word around and spend some hard $$$ on his vehicles. My gaming table needs more war, more incoming arty, more ponies, more blood, more tank assaults, more carnage and these superb DLD vehicles.
-
Wonder if my gift certificate is still valid, also I wonder where it is ;D
-
That would be very cool. I sold off my 15mm DLD stuff a couple years back. I would not mind getting a few more for Tomorrow's War, and I've always wanted a couple of his 28mm vehicles.
-
Would be great to see the same/very similar designs readily available, esp in both scales!
-
It's a cruel thing to raise our hopes, especially as the space stuff probably won't be back.
Not shedding tear about the ships, but definitely missing the old space dock...

cant see your pics on first post...
-
Ooh, I always wanted some of his scout cars.

They are still there, taken from several sites :D
-
Well this just proves that there is a God afterall! lol
Brilliant news, felt really gutted when I started getting into the 15mm sci fi side of things only to discover DLD was long gone! I really like the look of the products they made, especially the MBT.
-
It is good news indeed. Great product, great guy to do business with. I need a couple Komodos.
-
Those awesome, before my time I guess. I will buy some in plastic or resin. I am starting Gruntz28mm and need some vehicles!
-
I've been reviewing some of the models and they would be great to use with "Tomorrow's War" or any other near-future ruleset. There's models for the Neo-Soviets and for their NATO/whatever opponents :-*
I'll keep checking the original thread on TMP to see if there are any news.
-
:o <irony alarm is sounding!> Great! ::)
I don't need a temptation to complicate my retirement down sizing plans with a scale I never used! This might force me to seriously consider dropping something else to fit 15 mm Science Fiction into my retirement plans!! o_o
On a cautionary note, as stated on the TMP postings (which I actually broke down and read,) there has been talk of this before - when it is really happening then - and only then - will I seriously consider what I would need to give up to get into 15 mm SF. :? ???
His stuff looked great back in the day. 8)
Gracias,
Glenn

Some DLD minis, but in 15mm:

Some of those are the ones I got rid of.

There are some nice vehicles there but there is definitely a need for a few tweaks... the wheels are too close together on some for a start.
That said, the designs would be fairly easy to translate in to a 3d modelling program so the tweaks would be easy to sort out. I'd be interested to see just how much money DLD will be going for with the Kick Starter though... plastic production isn't cheap and if they are after making a selection of vehicles, it will be in the hundreds of thousands of pounds to do it.
I guess we'll just have to see how much of the DLD nostalgia stands up to be counted once the Kick Starter begins...
-
Their dropship is just pure awesomeness by the time I saw it they were long out of production :(
If they were to produce them in plastic... Oh my days...
-
Ok, here's their official FB page:
https://www.facebook.com/dldtanks
And some news:
"Ok...folks....so here's the "official" scuttlebutt.....yes...we are working on bringing DLD Productions back into the miniature gaming world. A couple of things to go over....the plan is this, to have all of the 15mm resin kits that we had/have in production, and convert them over to plastic injection kits.....several reasons for that move....the other is that we will be introducing our own game system for use with our vehicles.......PLUS our own line of troops based on our universe! So, the photos you see here are just the concept vehicles until we get them into plastic......yes....we are going to be doing a Kickstarter to get the ball rolling....please stay tuned......as things progress, we will update this page and the official website when it is up and running again.
For now, however, we are concentrating on the 15mm line.....at this time.....we would love nothing more that to make the 25mm kits in plastic injection! But, one iron at a time folks....so hang out.....take a look at some of the pics.....and start figuring out your army lists!
Thanks!"
So....just so everyone knows and understands......the owner of DLD Productions, will be at Brookhurst Hobbies, ( 12188 Brookhurst St Garden Grove, CA 92840, phone: (714) 636-3580), every Sunday to play the new game system, "This is WAR!" by DLD Productions. A 15mm scifi/futuristic ground based game system. It's fast, it's brutal, and it's WAR! Come out and play a game or two with the owner....kool vehicles,...easy rules.....fun times will be had by all!

;D

15mm only. Bummer
-
Their site is now up:
http://www.dldproductions.com/
Or at least the start of it...
-
I think I'd buy a few just to see if it'd get David to dabble in resin again, and MAYBE bring back the FRD. ;)
Breath-holding commencing...

Last update from the FB page:
The gentleman that was doing our concept art for the troops, has taken ill, and cannot maintain the project. So....we ask that his health be swift, and that he will return to us fully restored. In the mean time, we are looking for someone to step in and do some concept drawings......2-3 troop figures for the 4 Factions we have. If someone would be as so kind as to step up and give us a hand, it would be greatly appreciated. Contact us through email, please. Thanks!

Shame it's only 15mm

But if it succeeds, I'm sure we'll get 25mm vehicles ;)

Another update from FaceBook:
DLD meeting in progress now... David Dunn and Steven Slade in attendance. Close to live date.

And after 2 years....they are doing their Kickstarter:

15mm only. Bummer
1) But REALLY pretty 15mm...
2) Had done other scales; if this goes, may again.
I'm really wishing the space dock comes back. I have and love Ravenstar's, but would like a DLD.

I have a slight reservation about the way this Kickstarter is being done, I will be really surprised if it funds 70k.
Problem with the 15mm focus is there are huge amounts of 15mm sci fi vehicles currently on the market, and so attempting to try and get all of these vehicles turned into plastic kits in one go I just don't see as doable. There are masses of products now, many of which already fill in the Future Murica vs Neo-Sovs, so it'd have been best to have done this as bite size pieces.
He should have probably focused on faction by faction kickstarters to gauge how they would do.
And I think throwing in 25mm-28mm versions into the mix as an option would have likely drawn in a bit more interest perhaps? Whether that's doable with it being 15mm focused atm i'm not sure.
-
If he legitimately needs that amount to get everything made for 15mm, adding 28mm would add quite a bit to his cost and fore him to raise the fund request even higher.
-
I have the impression that 15mm future vehicles are niche within a niche, and may not have the market to sustain a boxed game and line of injection plastic kits (or a 70K Kickstarter, for that matter). Time will tell, I'm going to pledge and see what happens.

I wouldn't call it niche considering just how many companies produce 15mm sci fi vehicles, the variety is far more considerable than 28mm sci fi, perhaps even including GW, though not as famous.
-
David here, DLD....Whewwooi....after waiting for about a week to get on here and post, I finally got my approval! yeah.
So I saw someone made mention about the amount and if it was for all the 15mm kits, we could throw in the 28mm stuff....well......no....
The kickstarter is for steel molds to be made, CAD work-ups, (since the vehicles are in physical form, it's just a matter of measuring the dimensions and inputting them
into the CAD program.), and the initial run of 5000 sprues...........for TWO molds. Having a steel mold made for plastic injection is NOT cheap! Back in 2001-2 I looked into
it and nearly had a coronary! It was $10,000 PER CAVITY! Whaaaaattt??!!!!! Yea....so if you had a kit with, say, 30 parts in it.....yea....you get the idea......
Now, things have changed....technology has advanced and the cost of doing things like EDM'ing a block of steel to make a mold, has actually dropped a lot. Which is why we are
doing the kickstarter now. My "mold guy" is out of Anaheim, California and has been doing this for over 25 years. I have seen his work, been to the shop, (yes....I drooled at the 15+
plastic injection machines running.....running....), and I would love nothing more than to see the entire 15mm line in plastic! (I'm thinking of the rapid cyclic rate, and the less weight for
shipping....!)
If this flies, then we will do the 28mm line....then the Space Based. (Orbital Repair Dock......in PLASTIC! sigh......OH! BETTER YET! 28mm Dropship...in PLASTIC!....yum!)
Anyway, there's the skinny. Going to plastic injection is the only way to mass produce anything of any quantity. Resin takes way too long and the clean-up, (air bubbles, and I do apologize for those, but sometimes they still get in there..),...trimming parts, etc.....no longer cost effective, (been doing this for 30+ years......oi!).
So, go to the Kickstarter, "This is WAR!", take a look around.....for overseas shipping, unfortunately, it will be weighed at time of shipping, BUT.....for every $25 increment, or thereof, we will add in 2 sprues for FREE.
Domestic.....if your pledge, (with Add-on's) is under $100, then it is $15 shipping, and you get 1 FREE sprue.....over $100, and it is $25 and you get 2 FREE sprues.
Hopefully I will see you guys there.......if not.......
Then I will see you on the battlefield!
D.

Good luck to you David,
After having been a backer for several other hard plastic KS campaigns I can certainly appreciate what things cost even with today's new technology.
Sadly after my collection overran the garage and then the basement I sold off all my small scale stuff and promised my wife to stick to one scale (28mm to 35mm is one scale right ;)). I have two of your resin Komodos and love them. I sincerely hope the 15mm campaign succeeds so we can see the bigger kits.
-
Sorry to hear rwwin.......I wanted to remind everyone, that there are only a few more days left on the KickStarter.........many kool things to release.....tanks, APC's, MICV's, Dropships, Combat Walkers, artillery........hey..."This is WAR!" afterall....!
-
Someone was so kind asto point out to me that there were more than a few days left.......dyslexia and being overly tired will do weird things to your eyes.....I saw a 9....when it was actually 19......so I read it as......9......oi!
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I am dyslexic.....lol........

That is noted when i pledge $001 to the cause. :-)

1) But REALLY pretty 15mm...
2) Had done other scales; if this goes, may again...
Please note, all, but especially David: never meant the KS should include 28mm, only that, if successful, might see 28mm as a possible follow on.
Though, I'd think similar kits to the current attempt, but in the larger scale, might well add a factor of scale to the price.
Best of luck, DLD!
Doug

Hey Doug....no worries......a few other people on other forums were asking if we were going to do the 28mm as well as the 15mm stuff...just would not be feasible.
We will see what happens....I really would like to have these kits in plastic.......
-
Ok...so NOW there is 6 days left!.....Plastic injected 15mm futuristic/scifi vehicles,.....dunno which is a better deal.....$10 in resin.....vs....$6.25 in plastic....hmm.....lighter,....cost less....dunno......it's not over......til it's over! (And don't forget the troops too! In metal of course....not plastic....but still have to make the rubber molds for them....)
-
45 hrs left to go. I have no idea how many people clicked the "remind me later" button. KickStarter does not provide that information. So, given that, we shall see, what we shall see.
-
Less than 10 hrs to go on the KickStarter: "This is WAR!"
I want to thank everyone who supported this project, and look forward to "seeing" you in the very near future!
Thank YOU!
