Title: chinese buildings - the turbo way
Post by: Turbo-Ben on 02 March 2013, 04:05:04 PM
As every year, I built some scenery for one of my friends birthday. As 2013 is my rcw/BoB-theme-year and he fields a chinese army in the BoB I choose to build him some small chinese houses as a test piece for the other ones I will build till november.

Now I think about what specials our chinese village will need?

But heres the pic:

Nice work!

What did you use for the roof?

The roofs are plastic sheets I bought from a french seller at the Crisis/Antwerp. If you heat them at about 100°C you can bend them around a tube.  ;)

Always nice to see more Chinese architecture.  Suitably grubby stucco for the BoB  :-*

Yep, there it is! But be aware that this quy doesn't know how to use a ruler, so even if you buy multiples of the same sheet, you could get different sizes of tiles. And it doesn't help to talk to him...  :(

Hello, I know how to use a rule(ruler) but it is necessary to recognize that to Crisis, it is difficult to tidy up that every time a customer after the disorder!

Thank you all! I will have to build more in about a month, as the next birthdays are coming.  ;)

Hi Nicolo, not a real big problem for me now, as I will use the different sheets at different projects (my spanish and chinese houses) so this won't be recognizable.
But when I bought them I was a bit pissed off when I realised I got different ones, and even when I came back ten minutes later and talked to you I couldn't get the right ones.
I know it can be stressy at a show, so lets hope it works better if you order direct from the shop.

I did the next two houses over the last evenings and am really happy with them.

Today I gave them to their new owner, as always a birthday present.
Unfortunately I forgot to take some photos - but I'm sure Remington will take a pic for us if we ask him nicely! ;)

Not to hijack your subject, but (from the same seller in France  lol ) I bought a number of wooden puzzles - all Chinese buildings from small to large.  I have "upgraded" the smallest one (3.5 Euro) now by adding some structure to the walls, downloading a roof from the net and painted it.  This is the result:

I know, you already had them in your thread a month ago! ;)

But mine are cheaper! About 1 Euro for the roof and 1 Euro for the rest (card, plaster, plasticard) per house. :D
They will, of course, need a bit more work. ;)

But I think that it is worth it, don't you?

Indeed, I was'nt sure you was that, so it was easier to re-post (lazy me...  lol)
Yours are certainly more than worth considering to build, no doubt, but I have placed two bulk orders with him over the last couple of years and they are now classified as project 32014.Chin.8412.bis...  lol

Ben was so kind to present me with two new buildings for my birthday last weekend. While I own no Chinese forces of any kind, I am really really proud to own them. I've included a Sikh for scale purposes.

Now this one is my favourite... The writing on the wall has something to do with "Hope" and "Greece", but to be honest, Ben can probably explain this much better than I can.

Thank you for the pics! Much better then I could do!

The writing 希腊的 is a kind of nameplate and means "the Greek" , or at least, the google translator told me this!  ;)

It also told me that the first of these three 希 translates as "hope", together with the second one 希腊 it should read "Greece".

While I suspect that this isn't 100% correct, I think it adds a nice spot of color to the house.

No critisism, at least, as they both look great.
The writing is a nice touch (correct or not, how many people would really know?) and coupled with the brighter colouring of the roof tiles helps bring them to life.

The problem is that you have used simplified characters (introduced by Communist China) and not traditional characters: 希臘. In addition, these two characters designate only associated countries. Modern Chinese bi-syllabic being you must associate the characters to the word "hope" 希望 "
希腊的is an adjective.
In addition, I have a big doubt about the color of the tiles of your home. Here are some pictures of the village of my wife in Fujian :

Thank you for the photos Nicolo, they look very cool!
Can you tell us what kind of houses (maybe shops?) these are and what is written around the doors?

The light red color of my writing seems to be possible?

What are the roofs made of on those pics?
Are this very flat tiles or a kind of wood? I cant really see it and would like to know!

And where is the village in the province Fujian?

These are all residential houses except the last which is the clan temple.
What is each side of the doors are awards lucky. They are always made by two parallel ways. The writting seems is not plausible.
They are indeed flat tiles.
This is the village of 石 亢 150km from Xiamen (厦门)

In addition, I have a big doubt about the color of the tiles of your home. Here are some pictures of the village of my wife in Fujian :

I did a little research (maybe I should have done a bit more before) and found the "temple of heaven":
http://cdn2.vtourist.com/4/3186031-Temple_of_Heaven_Beijing_China_Beijing_Shi.jpg (http://cdn2.vtourist.com/4/3186031-Temple_of_Heaven_Beijing_China_Beijing_Shi.jpg)

This one has a different kind of tiles (more like the ones on my model then on the other pictures) and even the color is a nearly perfect match.
This shows that it is possible (and was before) to produce blue tiles in China.
Even if my houses are no temples, I think this photo justifies the use of this colour!
And what is, off course, most important: it just looks very cool and gets them this exotic look! ;)

I finished the next chinese building some days ago (and already gave it away  ;) ).

You can find it in this pic from our Corto Maltese in mongolia game last friday.

Remington took it home and will hopefully show us some better pics soon (and I hope after that he will give it back to our mate Jörg and will not just keep it! ;))

Here I am bearing photos. I have to be honest... I was tempted to just keep the temple and pretend I've never seen it :D, but it was actually real life getting in the way. I am really sorry for the delay.

As mentioned, the Temple and its surroundings were the stage for the latest of Corto's adventures. That day it was full of evil brigands and guarded by the Baroness' lackies!

Here are some better shots of this large building. The sikh has wandered into the shot for scale purposes.

Is it my imagination and/or eyesight, but do those buildings in the pictures of your wife's village have flat tiled roofs. Or is it wooden slats? I'm interested because I want to build some Chinese buildings and different styles of roofs would look nice. Actually my goal is to produce a variety of buildings for pulp era games set in the Pacific. Nothing too specific, but buildings like a customs house, trader's post, warehouses, and simple residences. I might even do a small company building with a warehouse attached.

Not a chinese building but a build this time.

After our con last weekend I'm in the mood for building again. The last days before the event were very stressfull for my brother and me as we tried finish our table for the show, but now I can go back to normal speed and enjoy it again!

Well, after we played some nice games and also had a nice china-based game on the large table I decided that we would need some bits for a small harbour and one of those characteristic arches on the way.

I started with a small sampan that will fit the chinese river pirates I bought from Foundry on Crisis.
Started yesterday afternoon, finished it (except painting of course) last night! ;D

This shows that it is possible (and was before) to produce blue tiles in China.

I assume by your introduction that you live in Germany. There is that fun park Phantasialand in Brühl. Have a look there at the Geister-Rikscha and the theatre. The tiles used to build their roofs were donated by the people of China and are originals from over there. If I am not totally wrong I seem to remember  a kind of turqoise colour.

Yep, you really should do!
And you are right, it's a 'cthulhuid' skull... (from a WH undead box)
The cover is made of fiberglass wallpaper - I think this should work out right as this stuff is nearly undestructible and should take paint well.

There are no leaky vessels - there are just boat that need a special crew member to push the water out!

Btw I'm nearly finished! I just realised that I forgot the rudder! :? And some sticks to drive the boat in the flat water.

Jesus these are great, the buildings and especially the boat.  Fantastic, well done Ben.  Is it possible to have a quick post on how you built the boat???

Sure!

First I painted one half of the boats shape on a piece of card, then cut it out and use it to draw the other half.
Use the template to cut a piece of styrodur (about 1cm strong), cut the edges in an acute angle to give the boat its basic shape. Use some needles to stick a piece of card around one side of the styrodur, then draw the shape of the railing on this paper, cut it out and use this as a template for the other side.
Glue the planks on top of the styrodur, then glue the railing to the styrodur, use white glue and fix it with the needles again until it's dry. Finish the railing at the front and back. I use a doublesided tape or hot glue to glue the planks to the outside of the railing.
For the tents I cut a rectangular piece of card. You will have to cut the two short sides until it fits the shape of your boat (you can fix it with needles and cut it at the model), use this as template for the wallpaper. Again, I use the doublesided tape to glue the wallpaper to the card template, then use hot glue to fix it at the boat as this is the only glue that dries fast enough.
If you want a mast at your boat, push it into the styrodur before you do the planking. You can glue it in place when the rest of the model s done, right before painting.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask, maybe it's not that clear for you as it is for me! o_o
When I cut the next blocks of the styrodur I will try to take some pics, can't do at the moment because my hot wire isn't here!

Is it a mistranslation or do I just don't get it? o_o

Of course she and the kids will be with me, thats the only thing that makes me go there...
It's too late today, I'm going to sleep! ;)

No mistranslation, I was just making a joke (it was implied your family would also be wih you).

I am going to see if something similar exists here in Australia for that wallpaper (wall paper is not popular here). I suspect Bunnings or Ikea will have it for door mats.

It's the texture of the fibreglass wallpaper. I used the rest of the wallpaper as the background for the fotos on page 3!

That is an excellent idea.  The look is fantastic  :-*

wall paper is not popular here

Nor here (at least not for the last 30 years or so), but I'm going to have to start looking for some
