Title: Naming in Norwegian help!
Post by: Sinewgrab on 10 March 2013, 07:41:32 PM
Alright, lads, now you know I have my Norsk forces riding on the bulettes figures from D&D - now I am trying to name them.  In old D&D terms, they were called the Bulette, or LAndshark, or if you go waaaayyyyyy back, the Sharkadillo or Snapperdillo.  I was going to use Norwegain for LAndshark, but I, being NOT native, cannot figure out how it is supposed to be constructed, and Babelfish gives me a full sentence, instead of a name.  Can one of you natives give me a hand with this, please?

Well, the direct translation of Landshark is "Landhai". I'm not familiar with neither your work nor the DnD-monster in question, but I'm sure to take a look at both now. Let me know if you need some more ideas or feedback.

Edit: I've had a quick look at your Free Norway forces, and damn, that's some rather wonderful stuff! I did not find a naked Nansen in there anywhere, but I have not looked at it all yet ;)

Yes, "Landhai" it is ;)

Snugger, where are you located?

Landhai, huh?  That seems almost anticlimactic.  Usable, though.

And what in the world is a naked Nansen?  Do I want to know?

Well, as you might or might not know, Fridtjof Nansen is one of the biggest names in "modern" (as in Victorian era and later) norwegian adventurers, matched I would say later only by Thor Heyerdahl (Wikipedia linky on Nansen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fridtjof_Nansen)). But he was also a ladies man, and a year or two back a national newspaper ran a story on the nudie pictures of himself he sent to his mistress...

Hahah, oh dear. I am a minor fan of Nansen, but I can't say as I ever heard that before. The only Nansen expression I know is "A full Nansen".

"A full Nansen" is supposed to refer to a mustache and beard which are entirely frosted over due to being in extreme cold conditions, but the existance of those photos puts rather a new spin on the phrase...

You know what, I can't believe I missed this fellow!  I am going to have to add him in...hmm, head of the exploration arm of Free Norway sounds like a good position for such a fellow.
