Love the book cover.  Great artwork.   :-*

Also nice to see I'm not the only one who posted some 4Ground wagons on plasticard with a horse team!  :D

Just caught up with reading all of the Chronicles and I must say I am really looking forward to this game. The rules sound simple but fun. The figure sets are also looking really good, can't wait to see the other two sets. I'll definitely be pre-ordering these rules and a gang to use (I already have tons of cowboys, lawmen, bandits and the like but heck, I could always do with more right?) Which set I order first I don't know, I may wait till the other 2 preview or, more than likely, get an itchy clicking finger and preorder what is available now. Best of luck with this, I'm sure it'll do well.

I like the concept of the rules and the cards, the minis look nice  but I already have a nice pile of metal including some unfinished ones. I would rather spend the cash on buildings and such next along with the rules.

Going to have to pace myself and order when I can...GEG already has me for the book and at least a blister or two of the Natzi Youth since they are the only ones to make the figures! I also have a large order with Warlord on the books, a possible trial of the 35mm Batman game and a trip in about two months that I have to save for! Gah!

I've had a look and I really like the artwork and the minis you've put out pics of. Not so sure that I "need" another ruleset but I am quite tempted to get the minis at least. Best of luck with the game!

I like the minis from what I can see - though to be fair I have over 50 Old West minis so it's hard to really justify any more!

I take that each player must have their own deck? So, each player has to buy a book and deck or cards? Will seperate card decks be sold? Reason I ask is this, if I want to get my friends into this, but they don't want to invest yet, having a spare deck (if I need two to play) would be ideal.

I haven't fully gotten a grasp of it - but there's no way you need to each buy a full copy just to play.  That's kind of silly.   :)

You always need another ruleset!

I need more minis and terrain!  lol

I had the exact same thought.

I had the exact same thought.

I agree, I would rather take that 20 pounds (almost $25 US for me) and get a nice TriCity Laser or Sarissa building rather than getting another blasted book. To me the game isn't a game if I can't build up scenery and other models...just from a long time gamer point of view, if you require two decks, sell them on the side as well. That way it is easier to demo the game to people to recruit them in, otherwise you have to explain..."ya you have to buy a book and set of cards for each player....". In this economy people are easy to draw into skirmish games as they don't need many figs, can focus on scenery and only need one rules set that can be shared between friends.

That is why I would like to hear from GEG if this is the case...it is a factor for me to weigh in buying the rules or not.

From the demo game I got the impression that it's 1 deck for 2 players - one takes red one takes black.

That is good if that is true!

I'm sure greatescape will clear it up, but that was the impression I got...no one would make you buy a rulebook for each player for a skirmish game like that.
Title: Re: DEAD MAN'S HAND pre-orders and preview

One whole deck comes with Dead Man's Hand and one whole deck is all you need for a game. One player takes the black cards, the other takes red as fastolfrus says.

I have moved 7 times in 8 years so I think that'll do for the now... Tempting though,, seems like Ye Olde West is popular up North. Just have to drag this Bedford crowd in kicking and screaming. I'm sure they can be swayed when I bring my stuff down :-D.

So, when are you going to post teaser picks of the Desperados? This is a key factor of if I order the book only or a box with them. Out of the four factions that is the one with the weakest number of miniatures (appears I have enough for a 21pt gang easy).

Also, new question, are there or will there be rules for using dynamite, nitro or other intereting things? Reason I ask is that was one of the things was the hirling guys you could get in Legends of the Old West.

Pics of the others will be up towards the end of next week.

With regards to your rules questions, there are prospector types that will be utilising such sneaky tactics but they will be in the second book.

P29 Horses. Might cover it. Possibly.

There have been mention of bonus movement and modifiers to hit for being mounted so I assume that it'll be covered in the relevant section Nick.

Might not be, but I'm an optimistic sort.  :D

Thanks Ray. Let's hope so.  :)

I think I will be picking up a set of rules at Salute. I like. What I see so far. ;D

Can it be played with more than two people, splitting the car deck four ways into suits perhaps?

Me too. The system appears to have exactly what I'm looking for. With the potential with the second volume to include experience and a story driven campaign.  :D

The figures look great too.  ;D

Might try and get a demo at Salute.
Title: Re: DEAD MAN'S HAND pre-orders and preview
Post by: greatescapegames on 30 March 2013, 01:07:48 AM
Current orders are set to go out on April 15th.

The deck can be split 4 ways for a game but it would make a better game to use two decks for four players.

Horse rules are in there.

We hope to have all four sets available for April 15th despatch for pre-orders.

We're looking forward to the demo games at Salute. We're running through a smallish scene and can accommodate one to four players for each demo.

Ray, I'd love to give the game a try at Salute too. Sadly I will be running the Oshiro Models/Red Planet Miniatures VSF game,so won't get much free time beyond doing a bit of shopping(which will include these rules) :)

Swing by and say hello if you get the chance, I'll be wearing my Boot Hill T Shirt. :)

Damm you! You just had to show those Desperados and they had to be cool! A rouge Indian, two former Confederates, some low life gunslingers tossed in with some Banditos....oh you know how to hit below the belt there! Well, there goes another wad of cash.  :(

On a serious note, huge props to this set having a great deal of diversity but why was not an African American not included in one of the sets or a Chinese worker? Both was also cornerstone ethnic groups that had a presence in the old west. Some of my past purchases for Old West figures was often driven by diversity as well as the cool factor of the figure.

Isn't there a Chinaman in there somewhere?  I have painted up some of my normal Cowboys as black fellas.

I do need a couple of Coolie miniatures for my game... lol

PS: Was hoping for a bit better price on the mini's.   :'(

What are the table size(s) for the games? The scene didn't really give you an idea. With 3 vs 4 models it should be a 4x4 at most, maybe even a 3x3....
Title: Re: DEAD MAN'S HAND pre-orders and preview
Post by: Ray Earle on 03 April 2013, 01:08:10 PM

It really is up to you. We've said about 3 x 3 but played in smaller areas, especially for the early scenes. Elbows, you'll be happy to know that the gunhand for the Cowboys is a black guy.
Title: Re: DEAD MAN'S HAND pre-orders and preview
Post by: Elbows on 03 April 2013, 11:34:53 PM
I can understand that - after all Cowboys and Old West minis in general don't sell in huge numbers, so prices go up, etc.  They're also not "bad" prices just a bit more than I pay for my normal guys.  If I see a set which really gets me, I may pick some up.  The desperados set is appealing.

I thought I had seen you post it somewhere, do you have a list of U.S. distibutors yet?

If  I was a gambler, I would say the Desperado set is going to outsell the other sets. Maybe even combined.

I'll add the US distributors list as soon as Mark at Great Escape Games confirms it (should be next week).

Now I reckon the Lawmen, followed by Desperados... I appreciate what you have have said as I painted the Desperados. We have had the gunhand painted by the amazing Cubster but won't have a picture of that for at least a week.

It'll be interesting for my sanity; we've had equal numbers of each cast to start with.

Hurry up with the US listing, those of us on that side of the pond would appreciate it. Sucks to eat the shipping and exchange rate both plus wait sometimes almost 2 weeks to get anything. About the time your stuff drops for sale will be when I am going to get in line for the rules and a box of Desperados....I have plenty of old west figs, but those guys take the cake. And I am a sucker for those type of bad guys and the confederate uniforms and the Native american tugs at my hearstrings of my lineage.

Great Escape had a question...

Reference: http://www.greatescapegames.co.uk/dead-mans-hand/scenes

In the Judge Barker Must Die scene it says in "THE END" that the game ends if one of FOUR things happen. There are only 3 in the PDF. Is that  a typo and Four should be Three or was one omitted? The scene looks stacked against the Bad Guys in the scene with the current, was there a final win option for the bad guys? "If the good guys run out of cards"?

I read contracts for a living so proofing is what I do.  ;)

I think I mentioned it over on TMP, but GreatEscape --- if you're going stateside and can swing it, Neal over at www.thewarstore.com is basically the bread and butter for many, many (if not, most) American gamers.

Since I buy all my paints, terrain, and often miniatures there - it'd be even more enticing to be able to purchase some extra minis there too.  He's a good dude and has excellent shipping costs.  Definitely look into it.
