Left this a bit late for a thread leading up to the big day but I've had more than my fair share on my plate :(
Anyway, on to some pictures :)
I've recently finished three more building bases for my samurai demo game at Salute this year and I must admit I'm quite pleased with them. There are still a couple of details to go on, such as benches and stalls but they are pretty much there.

The layout will be similar to last year but with the addition of six foot of castle wall on the back edge :)
I'll be borrowing some bases from a good friend (I made them for him a while back) and I have some others that I've kept. As the weeks count down I'll be posting more sections of the table itself so I can get an idea of how best to lay them all out (with the able assistance of my lovely wife).
Watch this space :D
cheers

Looks great - hope to get a minute to come and have a look on the day

Beautiful. What's your table number?
-
Lovely stuff as usual James - it will be a beauty!
-
Looking great.
-
We may actually make the effort this year. Where do we find your table?
-
I'm hoping to cross the pond and be there this year. Hopefully there are no Icelandic volcanoes on the verge of erupting.
-
Very nice
-
Great work James, sorry to be missing it this year :-[
-
Thanks for the comments chaps :)
We will be at table GA22 in the same sort of place as last year. When you come in through the front entrance we are on the far left hand side.
I'll get some more out and maybe some boards this afternoon :)
cheers
James
-
Are you still needing helpers?
If so, it looks like all 3 of us will be there.
-
Wow! That's a quality set up; really nice. Yet another table I won't be seeing at Salute :'(
I was all set to go this year till I worked out that the round trip would be 12 train/bus/underground trips over 9 hours for £120 (that's with a cheap main ticket). Get loads of photos guys!
-
Top of the Wargames Tree as always James..gorgeous buildings with exquisite detail for the platinum polish.
Are you aware of the new Samurai skirmish rules called Ronin coming out in August from our friends at Osprey?..your stuff will sell in droves as a result I reckon and I intend to put a large order in over the summer.
These rules will be set in C16th and I was wondering if Japanese architecture was largely similar through the Gempei War and upto the C16th?
Cheers
Kev
-
Sorry, I missed the Ronin thread James..you're having your stuff photographed and included in the rulebook!..marvellous
-
Thanks chaps :)
Got a wall section made at work today an dill take some progress photos tomorrow.
These rules will be set in C16th and I was wondering if Japanese architecture was largely similar through the Gempei War and upto the C16th?
Cheers
Kev
Certain elements can be used throughout such as pagodas/temples and the like and also more rural buildings but like most areas in the world, a period of several hundred years can show substantial change.
Unfortunately there isn't a lot on Gempei period architecture at the moment but that does seem to be changing in Japan as the era is getting more attention. Hopefully in the coming months I'll be able to start an earlier period range, I've already got plans for an Edo period set of buildings :)
cheers
James

Got a small building base finished off earlier (in my convalescent state). JV04 with a small field and a well.

I'll post some pictures of the first castle wall section tonight :)
cheers

Do your buildings have removable roofs James?
Cheers
Kev
-
Very nice work. What material do you use to base the buildings on?
-
How on Earth have I missed this ? Wonderful buildings, hope to see lots pics from the build and Salute as well. Are you guys going to dress up as samurais for running the game? :)
-
@Kev, they aren't unfortunately but the are hollow underneath. With the style of game that we play removable roofs aren't necessary.
@Whill4, they are pretty much all based on 3mm acrylic (any scap that's going at work I get my grubby little mits on :D )
@Pocolco, certainly not ;D although I'm not running it, I'll be on my stall. If the chaps running it decide to dress up, more fool them lol
As promised I've got a couple of slightly blurry phone pictures of the start of the main castle wall, I'm hoping to get it complete by the weekend :o

I've also take a couple of shots of the new building bases in situ (but not the whole board size as our lounge won't take it all lol ).

Bloody hell! That table is fantastic. Gutted I won't see it in the flesh.
-
Impressive, very impressive! :o
-
Lovely stuff. :D
-
Looking great Jim :-* :-* :-*
Can't wait to see it in the flesh.
-
Looking forward to ogling your samurai town again this year :-*
-
Sweet Lord :o :o..my life is complete ;D
-
impressive job! Will follow till the end! =)
-
WOW!! :-* :-* :-*
Where's my kimono...
-
So Jim you are saying that the table wouldn't attract more participants or your stall more customers if you and the chaps wore this kind of costume? lol
(http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j384/pocolocopocoloco/lolsamurai2_zps81ea7e97.jpg)
The table looks amazing! I guess no samurai costumes are really needed then ;) Lucky buggers all those who get to see that irl.
-
Many thanks chaps :)
@Pocoloco, if anyone does turn up like that I'm going to through them bodily out of the venue >:D (who the hell is that ??? ).
cheers
James
-
I thought I'd changed my privacy settings on Facebook..oh we'll the secret's out!
-
That tables stunning Jim!! Lovely new additions too! I can't wait to see the finished castle! We'll need to come and drool over it at Salute! ;)
-
Apparently he is part of Finland's leading reenactment group covering the Sengoku period.
-
@jim, elk and disco: the image is from ebay... in case you guys really want to buy a costume :D
-
Lovely work Jim, those first 3 buildings remind me of Sanjuro a small stream with red and white blossoms :D
-
:-* Hope to see it live.
-
Your town is (words can't do it justice).
So, :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks chaps (apart from the silly ones :D ).
One section of the main wall is nearly complete and I'll post a couple of pictures today.
cheers
James
-
Superb Jim. Love it. :-*
-
Stunning work. Looking forward to seeing it on the day.
-
Just the one picture I'm afraid until I can get more wall sections done but it's a start :D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/SALUTE%202013/530ebe7f641c9e65bf0617964ab640f5_zps4be79679.jpg)
The top wood/white section of the wall will be cast to make life a whole lot easier as all the tile rows have been applied individually; that's approximately 480-500 Seperate bits for 600mm of wall length and as much as I enjoyed it I'm not doing it again lol
More to follow after the bank holiday.
cheers
James
-
Is this a holiday snap? :o
Stunning work, just stunning.
-
(who the hell is that ??? ).
It's Thunderchicken in his PJ's
-
That is incredibly life-like, you talented bugger.
-
beautiful crazy work, Jim! =)
-
Jim,I build something, paint something and think 'that looks pretty good'.And then I see your work...Beautiful as ever,an inspiration :)
-
That is very nice work, as always! How did you model the stonework?
-
How was the rock facade done again?
-
Wonderful, just like a real thing :-*
But what is this talk about holiday? You gotta work on this then 24/7 so we get to see more amazing pics.
-
STUNNING :o :o :o :o
-
Many thanks for the replies chaps :)

Laser etched MDF with a suitable paint job on it (with help from my wife :) ).
Wonderful, just like a real thing :-*

I'm not going on holiday, I'm working on it over the bank holiday :D

with help from my wife :)
And there was me thinking it's you that's brilliant! :D
-

She only pointed to a pot of paint in my drawer for the base coats :D
cheers
James
-
Pretty darn impressive :)
-
Just a couple of dodgy phone shots of the rear of the wall showing the support detail. I'm still debating whether to put the planks on top but it's possibly not a good idea to have figures on them with the public around ???

I'm looking to get these complete by next weekend and if that's the case then the samurai board should be finished, just the Mars one to go... lol
cheers
James

Geez... though Japanese are so tidy. ;)
She is, that's why James has to keep his room locked ;)
Looking good Bibbs.
-
Oh dear James! Now that I've been bitten with the Samurai bug (well, Bushido), I must say that your houses are a great inspiration :)
It's a pity that they don't have a removable roof, since I want some lovely indoor fighting (which is impossible considering the small houses and the massive bases).
My poor attempts yesterday for a small cottage seems even poorer lol
Good luck at Salute!
-
Amazing! :o
-
Seriously impressive Mr Bibbly!
-
Stunning work, love the buildings and the gardens, fields you have made, brings it all alive
-
WOW !:o
Re finishing, you do realise its only a week to Salute? ::)
-
Many thanks chaps :)

He dared to sleep and not to slave on the masterpiece all through night? I think you local chaps need to go in situ and make sure it gets finished :)

Bit of a change around for the layout, more on the blog :)

woah. It will be lovely to see it full of samurais on it!
-
So.....are you some sort of Martian with two heads and four arms? How are you going to have this all finished?!?!? I know what it is, you must have laser cut an army of worker robots!! o_o o_o
-
Awesome table. Now I want to do medieval Japan. I hate you.

cheers
James
-
That's a gorgeous set up. Looking forward to pics of it in action.
-
Beautiful, James! :-*
Now smash it into a 2x2 table so we come by like dirty mongrels, play some bushido, and then go home ;)
-
Fabulous work, James, but what's going on? It's only Friday morning, you're already finished and you've still got a few hours before you have to load up....
-
Thanks chaps :)

Looking seriously good, James.

Yet another Salute set-up I'd love to see in the flesh. Stunning stuff. Hope everyone attending has a top time, lucky b******s!

Why are you not going???
-
I had planned to come but unfortunately I have a funeral to go to tomorrow for my partners Uncle who passed away 2 weeks ago. A real shame as he was a lovely bloke but he had been suffering from cancer for a long time and had been in an extreme amount of pain so it was a blessing in some ways. Anyhoo, less of this depressing talk, it would have been a good chance to
A: See some seriously good miniatures and scenery
B: Meet some of the people from LAF and put faces to names
C:Spend some of my hard earned (but unfortunately small in amounts) cash
I'll have to wait for the next one but hope all goes well for everyone from here trading, displaying or just going along for the fun.
Cholly
-
Lovely looking setup. Really amazing work!
-
Cholly: My condolences, mate.
Some things are much more important than toy soldiers.
Hope all goes as well as it possibly can given the circumstances.
:)
-
Cheers mate, Enjoy tomorrow.
-
That is a seriously beautiful looking table - what an amazing effort!! :-* :-*
Would kill to play on that and I'm not into samurais at all.
-
As the Shogun's retainers might say "OOOooooooohhhhhhhhhoaaaaaaawwwwwwwww!!"
-
Thanks chaps :)
Still up of course ::) but on the home straight, start packing the van in a couple of hours... lol
Will I never learn...
cheers

saw the table at Salute and looked amazing!!!!
It certainly did.
In fact amazing does not quite cover it.
:-* :-* :-*
-
I think it was the glamorous assistants wielding the scenic backdrop that really made it ;)
(Oh sorry, that was the Mars game :D)
-
Very nice setup. Looks fantastic.
I am sure the people were impressed at Salute.
Curious to see some more pics.
Björn
-
Impressed? I think they were stunned!! My pics do not do any justice to this beautiful board!!! :-* :-* :-*

The game looked excellent - even better than the photos.
Have got to say that I was stunned it didn't win "Best Scenery"....
-
I think it has done in the past, and deservedly so. However, they were probably looking for something entirely new. :-[
-
I must say I thought this was the best table at Salute :-*
However, they were probably looking for something entirely new. :-[
Something new doesn't always mean something better :?
All the best. Aly
-
You'll not find me disputing that, Aly, and there was plenty of new stuff on James table :)
-
I demand moar pics! :o :-*
-
Absolutely superb table. I stood there a couple of times admiring the details. It's just the sort of stuff one just wants to take home but doesn't have the space.
-
really beautiful work, i love japanese achitecture
-
T'was great fun to play on as well! Thanks for the opportunity Jim.
-
Always a pleasure to battle on your terrain mate, look forward to next year!
-
Many thanks chaps :)
Everything is put away now (took over a bloody week to do it ::) ).
I will be posting some photos I took on my blog and will link here when done so, just for completeness' sake
I must say I thought this was the best table at Salute :-*

Many thanks for the kind words Aly, I know that you've played on a lot of Dave's terrain so this is a real complement for me 8)

I'm not, it comes out every year in a slightly different form but it's the finishing details that make games win the prize. I need more (if not some) flyers and posters etc and also a cloth to cover the table and make it look nice. There are a few other details that other games had that put them more in the running then myself :)
cheers
